Manager of Becker Chemie GmbH in Leopoldshöhe, North
Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
Becker Chemie GmbH is a medium-sized company with strong
traditions that has successfully developed, manufactured and
marketed quality chemical products for more than 85 years. Its
extensive product range includes cleaning products for household
use, industry, the food & beverage and laundry sectors. It also
manufactures sophisticated cosmetic products. In addition to its
own wide range of brands, the company also supplies bespoke
products to its customers for further processing. It provides its
customers with tailored solutions as private label products in
short-run production.
Jörg Becker is the company’s General Manager and also in charge
of its IT systems. On the IT side, its 110 employees, some of whom
have highly specialized responsibilities in chemical development,
have access to a high-performance network based on WORTMANN
hardware; its servers are configured redundantly using Stratus
AVANCE.
For virtualization, Becker uses VMware on Dell hardware. In
total, it deploys nine systems as infrastructure and ERP
servers.
The challengeAs a result of the company’s growth, and the
increasing requirements on its IT systems, Becker found itself
confronted with rapidly spiraling volumes of data. As a result, it
urgently needed to optimize its data security infrastructure –and
its backup and restore strategy – even though the company was
satisfied with the systems in use up until that point. However,
data throughput was a weak point and an increasingly painful one.
The maximum available backup window had now almost been surpassed,
so a solution was urgently needed.

At the same time, the IT Manager, General Manager Jörg Becker,
was anxious to considerably reduce the restore times for the worst
case scenario – his company could not afford prolonged outages as
its business model is based on flexible customer service and
continuous deliveries.
Up until that point, a Tandberg Data RDX QuikStation 8 had been
used as a backup solution. It operated with Symantec Backup Exec
and was connected to the network via a 1 Gbit Ethernet connection.
The most important data was regularly backed up on a daily or
weekly schedule.
“With all the best will in the world, we couldn’t live with a
throughput of 1 Gbit any longer” says Jörg Becker. “However, we
were very happy with the RDX QuikStation solution itself, which is
why we asked our IT service partner, IT-Systemhaus JOBRI GmbH, to
find ways of optimizing the configuration.”
The solutionJOBRI GmbH, an experienced German IT service
provider from Bielefeld, analyzed the situation and recommended
installing a rapid RDX QuikStation 8 with an iSCSI 10 Gbit switch.
It was to be equipped with new RDX removable disks, with increased
capacities and higher speeds.
The new backup architecture at Becker Chemie was therefore as
follows: Veeam Backup & Replication software (installed
version: 9.2) now stores the data on the QuikStation 8. The
dedicated backup server – a Dell PE R730XD – is operated using MS
Windows Server 2012 R2. To guarantee the performance needed, it was
provisioned with 16 GB of RAM.
The backup solution’s key function is to back up the VMware
infrastructure. The new backup intervals, which require
considerably less time, are now scheduled on a daily, weekly and
monthly basis.
The need to run regular and comprehensive backups has become
even more critical recently,” says Jörg Becker. “Just think of the
threat of ransomware, the huge risk of a third party – blackmailers
– encrypting your data.”
For this reason alone, he says an external data backup solution
which was not accessible via the Internet was essential. The
Tandberg Data RDX technology components are ideally suited for
this. They combine the advantages of earlier tape solutions
(reliability, robustness, with mobile media and hassle-free
integration into the overall system) with today’s requirements for
speed both in the write/memory process and for re-access, restore
and high availability.
With the QuikStation 8 that is in operation at Becker Chemie, up
to 32 TB of data can be administered via on-line access; off-line
the quantity is by definition unlimited. This is coupled with the
benefits of robust removable disks media available in different
capacities - they are easily transportable and can be stored in a
secure location with minimal space requirements. They can also
withstand a drop of one meter onto a concrete surface without
damaging the cartridge.
For Jörg Becker, the decision to go with RDX technology proved
to be the right one, and he would not hesitate to use the same
solution again.
As the availability demands of our IT systems is constantly on
the rise,” he says, summarizing the issues faced, “there is less
and less time available for daily backups. Therefore, the fresh
approach to data backup provided by RDX technology has been
