978-4389 [email protected] Pembroke Pines, FL 33028 (954) 944-4564
[email protected] My interest to concentrate in the area of
Liberal Studies with a minor in Psychology is solely due to my
passion and desire to become a successful higher education
administrator. This was initiated from my work experience with the
University of Miami. While working in the Orientation and Commuter
Student Involvement department (under Student Affairs), I closely
observed co-workers and this gave me the opportunity to be
influenced and fascinated by the potential to assist students in
their academic endeavors, which quickly made me realize I would
enjoy the tasks and work responsibilities of their jobs. This
experience gave me the dream of what my career goals will be.
Furthermore, the psychology courses I have attended during my
undergraduate studies have given me the opportunity to utilize and
put into perspective the knowledge I had previously acquired
through personal experience while working at the University of
Miami. This made me realize the effect and the importance a college
education would have upon my educational growth and as a future
educational professional. As an African American, I have witnessed
the decrease in minority representation of academia. The deficit of
African Americans in higher education is a great motivator for me
to eventually obtain my Ph.D. in higher education. There should be
more diversity in academic schools settings as well as a diverse
population of individuals who pursue higher education, particularly
within student affairs. I am seeking a career that will offer me
the chance to help students develop social skills and succeed in
college as well as assisting students with the process of making
career decisions, by helping them choose a career or educational
programthis task of a higher education administrator is most
appealing to me. Secondly, a higher education institution program
mission (like Mercer University) is of great importance to me such
as to teach, to learn, to create, to discover, to inspire, to
empower and to serve. I want to be a part of an institution that
has a genuine interest in the advancement of our youth, and a
proven passion for knowledge particularly in education development.
I definitely do not want to be a person who is in a career just for
the money; I want to take a proactive stand in upholding the goals
and mission of a college institution. The wealth of erudition and
resources in higher education impresses me greatly. I believe that
my work and personal experiences have prepared me for a graduate
education and I am ready to further expand my own knowledge and
experience in an academic setting. I realized some important things
about what I truly wished to do. I want to take the path that may
not seem as certain, but for which I feel a passion that can extend
to and frame a purpose for my studies. I do have a real interest in
the area of higher education, and that I can support my family
doing the things I love to do.
4. INTERNSHIP REPORT SUMMARY 13031 NW 1ST Street, 106 (305)
978-4389 [email protected] Pembroke Pines, FL 33028 (954) 944-4564
[email protected] Are you currently in school and what grade
are you in? I would exclaim to all kids that I would meet on the
streets. I have always enjoyed sharing my educational experience
and knowledge with others. My interest to concentrate in the area
of higher education is solely due to my passion and desire to
become a successful administrator in the division of student
affairs. Completing this internship has given me a chance to
develop skills in three very important aspects of college life
(student success, advisement and financial aid). I closely observed
staff and administrators, this gave me the opportunity to be
influenced and fascinated by the potential to assist students in
their academic endeavors, which has confirmed how I would enjoy the
tasks and work responsibilities of their jobs. This experience gave
me the dream of what my career goals will be. Furthermore, this
internship has shown me my capabilities and level of responsibility
that I can handle while working on a job. To add, in this short
amount of time, I feel I have grown professionally. I have acquired
many skills like the use of information technology, learning how to
learn and professional communication skills. Altogether, because of
my own experiences with both economic and educational
disadvantages, I know the feeling of hardships from a student
perspective. This made me realize the effect and the importance a
college education would have upon my educational growth and as a
future leader. As an African American, I have witnessed the
decrease in minority representation of academia. The deficit of
African Americans in higher education is a great motivator for me
to eventually obtain my Ph.D. Overall, this experience has been a
great one but it has shown me there should be more diversity in
academic schools settings as well as a diverse population of
individuals who pursue higher education careers.
