Let’s Talk Menopause

Background: Menopause is a natural biological process which can happen between 45-55 years old. Some women suffer from the physical symptoms and emotional symptoms of menopause. As an immigrant, Korean women have limited opportunity to learn and sharing about their difficulties during menopause because of differences in language and culture.Well Woman and Family Trust (WWFT) ran the workshop “Let’s talk menopause “ in September, which was held in Kennedy park observation post in North Shore for 5 weeks during Friday morning. 7-9 people joined each work shop. Topics covered

definition of menopause, physical symptoms of menopause, breast cancer and cervical smear screening program, emotional problems during menopause and sleep hygiene. This opportunity provided awareness of menopause and its impact, and this workshop was the first time to talk and share their experience of menopause in NZ Korean community. The response was excellent. Some of encouraging feedbacks were: “I learned a lot about menopause. Now I understand myself. I can reflect and have more positive thinking about my future”“It was really good time because I could talk about my problem and share “

“It was fabulous because I can share…. I feel calm and comfortable after the meeting”

Asian community urged to do bowel screening test Asian people living in the Waitemata DHB

area are being urged to make the free two yearly bowel screening test part of their regular health routine.Scott McWilliams, who worked in the bowel screening pilot team for several years, says the bowel screening kits are simple to use. As a cancer survivor, he places extra value on the test that helps find and prevent bowel cancer. “My message to the Asian community is to do the bowel screening test – it’s easy! It’s not just about finding out if you have cancer, it’s about finding potential cancers early and removing them before they have a chance to grow.” Scott has recently done his third bowel screening test which tested positive, after both his other previous results two and four years ago were negative. “I was referred for a colonoscopy and there was no cancer but I had quite a few polyps removed. Polyps can develop into cancer over time, so the good news is the bowel screening test is preventing cancer as well as finding it,” he says. If you are aged between 50 and 74 and live in the Waitemata DHB area, and you have not received an invitation, please let us know by phoning 0800 924 432 or email [email protected]. If you would like to speak to someone in Chinese, call Jun Li 09 484 0222, or Korean, call Insik Kim on 09 484 0209.

Successfully helping Korean speakers learn to manage diabetes

In October, Comprehensive Care in association with Waitemata PHO successfully ran a diabetes self-management education course presented

in Korean. The course was tailored to Korean culture, with participants looking at sugar and fat levels in popular Korean foods to learn to make healthy choices. Course feedback was very positive. Attendees found the course more useful than English language courses because it was easier to understand the content in their own language and the course dealt with “the difference in eating style and life style between Eastern and Western cultures”.We are seeking expressions of interest from people with diabetes who would like to attend a free course conducted in Korean or Cantonese/Mandarin in the Auckland region in 2017. For Korean language enquiries, please contact Christina Lee on 09 448 0474 or [email protected]. For Chinese language enquiries, please contact Zhoumo Smith on 09 448 0475 or [email protected]. For people with diabetes, free courses and health services, including dietitian consultations, supermarket tours (in English or Hindi) and diabetes self-management education courses, are held regularly. Interpreters are available free of charge. Please contact us on 09 415 1091 or visit www.comprehensivecare.co.nz.

Hope, Support and Advocacy Provide Support for FamilyThapani Karanan came to New Zealand from Thailand 8 years ago. Thapani’s youngest child Franky was born with Nemo Deficiency Syndrome and is constantly hospitalized. Thapani was referred to ATWC’s Engaging Priority Families whanau coordinator Irena Giles who assessed their needs and starting working with Thapani to get Franky ready to transition to preschool. “We enrolled him with the correspondence school Te Kura in Wellington and devised monthly plans and goals Thapani wanted to achieve.”In 2014 Franky received a bone marrow transplant which improved his health tremendously. Irena supported Franky’s transition into preschool which was a huge milestone for him.Thapani says Irena has become a constant support and advocate. “I’ve seen a big difference in Franky’s progress in the last two years. Irena helped me get Franky as ready as possible for preschool and now school.”Irena is incredibly proud of Franky. “It has been a slow transition, as Franky has needed time to grow at his own pace. Seeing his progress has been such a joy and a pleasure. I just feel so blessed to be a part of their journey and being able to give support to mum.”If you would like to know more about our services, we are located at: 10 Beatty St, Otahuhu, Ph 276-3729. Love Your Bones: Protect Your Future

“Our skeleton is formed before we are born, supports us throughout our lives, and can remain long after we die. Regardless

of age, gender, race or nationality, we all have one. Yet this essential organ is so often taken for granted”. World Osteoporosis Day Report 2015.

We don’t tend to think about our skeleton. But without a healthy skeleton, we can be in big trouble.

Many people are not aware that bone is a dynamic tissue; and that the human skeleton is completely replaced every 8-10 years.

Osteoporosis is a condition causing bones to become weak, fragile, so break easily even as a result of a minor fall or a bump.

Osteoporosis New Zealand (ONZ) is dedicated to improving the care and outcomes for people suffering from this bone-wasting disease.

At least 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men will l suffer from an osteoporotic fracture during their lifetime.Fractures caused by osteoporosis can be life-threatening and a major cause of pain and long-term disability. The good news is that osteoporosis can be diagnosed, prevented and treated. ONZ’s focus is to raise awareness that some New Zealanders

are at increased risk of suffering osteoporotic fractures, also known as fragility fractures. These include:

• People who have sustained a fracture as a result of a minor fall or injury• People taking certain types of medicines to control other medical conditions• People who are living with certain diseases

If you are over 50 and have broken a bone as a result of a fall or modest impact then talk to your doctor to see if osteoporosis might have

caused that fracture.

To learn more about keeping your bones healthy throughout life visit www.osteoporosis.org.nz
