Roslyn, NY – Sid Jacobson JCC and the participating organizations of the Tikkun

Alliance of the North Shore (TANS) prepared and distributed collected food and winter

items at five locations along the North Shore of Long Island, with a celebration back at

Sid Jacobson JCC on Sunday, January 9, 2011.

“The TANS 2nd Annual Campaign Against Hunger brings together an entire community

of individuals who pushed their priorities aside and worked together to feed and clothe

the needy,” Bridgette Adair, Americorp Volunteer Coordinator at Sid Jacobson JCC,

said. “I am certain both volunteers and recipients walked away with a sense of

empowerment.”

TANS is a collaborative community effort formed to address issues affecting the world

today. Its focus on the Jewish concept of tikkun olam, repairing the world, includes

tackling issues such as hunger, poverty and the environment. During the Campaign

Against Hunger, 11 temples, two JCCs and UJA-Federation of New York worked in five

locations at once.

As a community, the TANS Consortium has collected 500 pounds of food and over 750

pieces of winter clothing for the Campaign Against Hunger, including desperately

needed items such as coats and sleeping bags. Over 200 volunteers turned out to

locations in Glen Cove, Port Washington, Hempstead, Westbury, and Wyndanch

simultaneously.

"Individually our programs are successful, but this collaboration brings community

outreach to another level, enabling us to support our neighbors in need,” Susan Berman

of Old Westbury Hebrew Congregation said. “TANS is expanding each month and

welcomes new members to join these efforts."
