ICS Vision
As an ICS volunteer, I will be part of this youth community
• Raleigh International works to create lasting change through youth. By working side-by-side with communities, young volunteers have the power, energy and positivity to create and deliver solutions.
• Established in 1984, sub-organisation of ICS that was established in 2011.
• Raleigh ICS works in Nepal and Tanzania in rural communities aiming to reduce poverty.
About
• I am 18 years old and have just finished studying a BTEC level 3 in Engineering at Bath college
• I applied to ICS as I wanted to take a gap year and travel to broaden my horizons BUT whilst also making a positive difference to the lives of others less fortunate than myself
• This coming weekend I have a workshop in Doncaster to meet the organisers and other volunteers
• When I get back to the UK I will either look for an engineering apprenticeship or apply to University (an Engineering course) to start September ‘20
About Me
• Tanzania's population of approximately 61 million
• The 3 key issues that citizens have deemed to be of most concern are health, access to clean water supply and education.
• Around 83.5% of the population are vulnerably employed.
• Females receive an average of 5.4 years of schooling compared to UK females who receive an average of 12.8 years.
• About 50% of the population do not have access to safe water.
My country - Tanzania
About My ProjectThere are two key projects I’ll be involved in:
• WASH (Water, sanitation and hygiene) - Improving access to safe water and sanitation through the construction of sanitation facilities and handwashing stations
• Livelihoods – Working with young people and women in particular to set up their own sustainable businesses.
• So far I have raised £125 through donations and a car boot sale.• I will be holding a Tanzanian night at The Three Horseshoes on the
20th of July where I will be serving Tanzanian food and there will be live music. The support of Ben is very much appreciated.
• I am currently planning to hold a silent auction as well, likely in early September.
• I will also be doing a variety of odd jobs and babysitting throughout the summer.
• My target to reach is £1,500 - half of which I need to raise by August 14th and the balance has a deadline of September 16th.
My Fundraising
• This is the final part of my ICS journey which I complete once I am back from my placement.
• I use it to explain to people what I have done and the difference that has been made.
• There are 7 main ways to complete the action at home task:– Campaigning– Volunteering– Engaging with the media– Fundraising for charity– Raising awareness– Parliamentary activity and lobbying– Starting a social enterprise
