Growing at a steady rate for the past seven years,Tanzania’s tourism is booming. According to theGovernor of the Bank of Tanzania, Prof. BennoNdulu, Tourism, earning $1 billion, now con-

tributes nearly triple the GDP of Agriculture, which has beenthe leading contributor to the East African country’s coffersfor most of its history. According to the Honorable Mme.Shamsa S. Mwangunga, Tanzania’s Minister of NaturalResources & Tourism, “Estimates are that more than 750,000tourists are expected to arrive in the country this year, bring-ing in about $950 million dollars. We attribute this growth toseveral factors, not the least of which is that Tanzania has astable and peaceful environment with a democraticallyelected government. Increased air access, with many carri-ers now flying direct to Tanzania, new luxury hotels on theMainland and Zanzibar, improved infrastructure, and tarmacroads on safari circuits are also major factors contributing toTanzania tourism’s success story.

Peter Mwenguo, Managing Director, Tanzania TouristBoard, noted that these improvements together with the di-versification of the tourism product, adds to the existing al-lure of Tanzania’s unsurpassed wildlife, seven World

Heritage Sites, the cultural richness and friendliness ofTanzania’s people, miles of beautiful Indian Ocean coastlineand the exotic spice Islands of Zanzibar. “Over the last 10years, Tanzania has become a stand-alone destination. In thepast, many tour operators to East Africa offered Tanzania asan add-on or extension to other countries. Now, there is sucha great demand by clients to spend their entire time inTanzania, that the same tour operators offer more than oneTanzania-only itinerary. Recently they have even expandedtheir programs to include the lesser known Southern Circuitwhere visitors can explore the world famous Selous GameReserve and Ruaha National Park. Recently, it was an-nounced that Ruaha will be combined with the adjacentUsangu Game Reserve, making it the largest National Parkin Africa.”

Tanzania as a brand is acquiring wide and respected recog-nition in the past few years, so it comes as no surprise thatAmerica is now the leading source of visitors to Tanzania’sGame Parks. In an effort to reinforce Brand Tanzania with theAmerican travelers as well as Travel Industry professionals inthe U.S., Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) launched a two-prong

Close to 30 percent of the land in Tanzania is pro-tected and dedicated to the preservation ofwildlife. In all of the wildlife countries, Tanzaniahas the greatest percentage of protected land,”

said Peter Mwenguo, Managing Director, Tanzania TouristBoard (TTB). “Close to 30 percent of our land is dedicated tothe preservation of wildlife, flora and fauna.” With the addi-tion of Mkomazi in the North, Tanzania now has 15 NationalParks, 32 Game Reserves and the world famous NgorongoroCrater, which is part of its own unique conservation area.

Mkomazi, Tanzania’s 15th National ParkNow an exciting new development for wildlife lovers is un-

folding in northern Tanzania. Added to Tanzania’s 14National Parks will be the restructured Mkomazi, a 56-year-old former game reserve. As the centerpiece of the newNational Park, Mkomazi is joined with the Umba ForestReserve, and shares a border with Tsavo National Park.Tanzania’s 15th National Park plays a key role within thegreater ecosystem as safe migratory routes and dispersal

areas for herds of elephants, oryx and zebras during the wetseason and as a protected area for giraffes and many otherbirds and animals year round.

National Parks (TANAPA), “Tanzania is constantly workingon upgrading its game reserves to National Parks. In aNational Park there is no consumptive use of resources andthis allows for the multiplicity of species, increasing thewildlife in the parks.”

The transformation of Mkomazi into a National Park hasserved three major purposes: the re-securing of its land as ahaven for wildlife, including the reintroduction of the criti-cally endangered (and once extinct in East Africa) black rhinoand the hunting dogs; the upgrading of the entire infrastruc-ture of 500 miles of road, an airfield, and dams and watersources within the new area; and the introduction of an inno-vative outreach program to villagers living in surroundingareas. Construction of schools and clinics, new boreholes andwater pumps, the formation of women’s groups and a soccerteam, and the introduction of cultural tourism are all part ofthe program meant to benefit the people of Tanzania as wellas its wildlife.

The Southern CircuitAlthough first time visitors must see Tanzania’s safari iconsin the North - the great migration of the Serengeti, the fa-mous Ngorongoro Crater, Moun Kilimanjaro, Manyara,Tarangire and Arusha National Parks - extended air servicehas made it possible to include the South in the same itiner-ary. Whereas Arusha is the safari capital of the North, Dar esSalaam, the exotic port city and commercial capital ofTanzania, is the jumping off point for the South.

“Since Tanzania’s tourism strategy is to encourage highquality, low volume tourism, the Southern Circuit createsmore diversity in the safari circuits and helps avoid masstourism,” said Amant Macha, Director of Marketing, TTB.

The Selous Game Reserve is the largest in Africa . It is alsoa UNESCO World Heritage Site. Along the Rufijii River,Selous offers the tourist different game viewing experiences, boat safaris, as well as walking safaris. In addition to itsmasses of elephants, hippos, buffalo, it is the remaining homeof the Black Rhino and is also home to 25 percent of the con-tinent’s wild dog population.

Ruaha National Park will soon be combined with UsanguGame Reserve, and expected to increase its size by over15,000 square kilometers; if this expected size remain thesame, it will make Ruaha the largest National Park in Africa.

According to Gerald Bigurube, Director General, TANAPA,one of the aims of the government in annexing Usangu toRuaha is in part to save the biodiversity of that area as well asto increase tourism to the region. This can best be accom-plished if the area is administered and marketed by TANAPA.

Ruaha, which boasts 10,000 elephants, the largest popula-tion of any East African national park, protects a vast tract ofthe rugged semi-arid bush country that characterizes centralTanzania. Its lifeblood is the Great Ruaha River . A fine net-work of game-viewing roads follows the Great Ruaha and itsseasonal tributaries, where, during the dry season, impala,

waterbuck and other antelopes risk their life for a sip of lifesustaining water. The risk is considerable with prides of 20plus lions lording over the savannah, cheetahs and leopards.Ruaha is also home to over 450 bird species. The UsanguGame Reserve includes the Ihefu Wetland, the natural waterreservoir for the Great Ruaha River.

Other parks in the South include Mikumi. Set between theUluguru Mountains to the north and the Lumango mountainsto the south-east and within a short flight from Dar es Salaam,Mikumi is teeming with wildlife and 300 species of birdlife.

Udzungwa Mountains National Park, one of the world’s keybiodiversity hot spots, is especially known for its 10 or sospecies of primates, including the rare Iringa Red Colobusand the Sanje Crested Mangabey, as well as the bizarre giantelephant shrew. Its constant climate has given rise to a rangeof flora and fauna, and sometimes called the AfricanGalapagos.Tanzania National Parks, [email protected],[email protected]

The Ngorongoro ConservationArea is one of the three divi-sions that compriseNgorongoro District in

Arusha Region. NCA was established in1959 as a multiple land use area, desig-nated to promote the conservation ofnatural resources, safeguard the inter-ests of NCA indigenous residents, andpromote tourism. The main features ofthe NCA include the NgorongoroCrater, The Serengeti Plains, and theNorthern Highland Forest Reserve(NHFR). NCA has been accorded thestatus of a World Heritage Site andlisted as one of the InternationalBiosphere Reserve by the UNESCO’sMan and Biosphere Reserve Program.

About 200 years ago the Maasai ar-rived, living in harmony with wildlifeand the environment. Visitors are wel-comed at two designated Maasai cul-tural bomas to learn more about theirunique culture, to take photographs, and to buy mementos.

Lake NdutuLake Ndutu and Lake Masek form

shallow basins where water accumu-lates from the nearby areas of slightlyhigher altitude. Lake Ndutu becomesalive with animals during the migra-tion. Flamingos are very common atlakes in the NCA.

Craters and WildlifeThere are nine craters within the

boundaries of the NCA and one on thenortheastern corner (Kermasi Crater). The highest crater is Lolmalasin. Thejewel in Ngorongoro’s crown is a deepvolcanic crater: The Ngorongoro Crateris nestled in a range of extinct volca-noes. It is the largest unflooded and un-broken caldera in the world. The richpasture and permanent water of theCrater floor supports a large residentpopulation of wildlife.

The swamps and forest provide addi-

tional resources for hippo, elephant, waterbuck, reedbuck and bushbuck, baboons and vervet monkeys. Predatoryanimals live off the abundant wildlife. The black rhinoceros in the Crater arerelatively safe and the number is ap-proaching 24. Some of the craters, suchas Ngorongoro, Empakaai and Olmotiare not true craters but are actuallycalderas. A caldera is formed when a

circular fault in the wall of the volcanocauses it to collapse into itself to form acrater floor.

fluence on the development of the area. Its ash has beenblown westwards onto the plains and helped shape the land-scape and ecology.

Olmoti and Empakaai Although smaller than Ngorongoro Crater, Olmoti and

Empakaai to the northeast are noted for their beauty and soli-tude. The floors of both craters are easily accessible on foot, but visitors should be accompanied by a local guide.

Oldupai Gorge and Laetoli Remains of the earliest humans were found in Oldupai

Gorge, the most famous archaeological location in EastAfrica. It has become an essential visit for travelers toNgorongoro or Serengeti. At Laetoli, west of NgorongoroCrater, hominid footprints are preserved in volcanic rock 3.6millions years old and represent some of the earliest signs ofmankind in the world. More advanced descendants ofLaetoli’s hominids were found further north, buried inOldupai Gorge. The excavation sites have been preserved forpublic viewing and work continues during the dry seasons. Thus, Oldupai and Laetoli make the NgorongoroConservation Area an important place for the study of humanorigins and evolution.

Olkarien GorgeThe Gorge is ecologically important because it is a vital

nesting site of the Ruppell’s Griffon Vulture. The best time tovisit is from March to April when the vultures are breeding.

Walking SafarisWalking in and around the NCA is encouraged with guides.

Short hikes can be organized with your lodge or the NCAheadquarters. Long walks can be adventurous and rewardingbut need some planning.

Best Season to VisitThe rainy season (November to April) is a very exciting time

of year as this is when animals congregate on the Short GrassPlains to have their young. Late February, early March is usu-ally a good time to see the migration on the plains.

In Africa dry season (May to October) is the best time forgame viewing. Within the Crater game-viewing is excellentduring this time. However, the Short Grass Plains becomecompletely devoid of game during this season. Empakaai andNdutu also have resident game that remains around the lakeall year round.Conservator of Ngorongoro,[email protected], www.ngorongoro-crater-africa.org
