THE TAP TIMES An annual newsletter of the American Tap Dance Foundation FALL 2008 From uptown at the legendary Apollo Theater, to down- town at historic Battery Park, the ATDF has been all around town this past year! Our 2007- '08 season, (July 1st, '07 to June 30th, '08) was filled with unique events that constantly presented exciting new challenges to our staff, board, teachers, performers, students and parents alike. All year, we were reminded “there are no small projects!” but the good news is that every event and program we took on was well worth the effort. I'm happy to report that our successes prove we're on the right track and in line with the ATDF’s mission of educating the public about this amazing American art form. As always, our small staff is doing the work of twenty, including forging new partnerships along the way. ATDF's list of accomplishments this year is quite impressive, with one of the highlights for me being the Youth Education Program, creating a continuous buzz and flurry of activity, ending with an outstand- ing Spring Youth Concert. Applause please, for my staff designing and implementing an expanded youth program that culmi- nated in the concert that showcased the growth of our students' abilities and the incredible creativity of our faculty. I'm especially thankful to Susan Hebach, our Youth Program Director and also the Director of the Tap City Youth Ensemble. Her job demands a great deal of patience, thoughtfulness and organization, which combined beautifully with the generousity and creativity she brought. Totally committed to supporting each and every student, she has shown great concern for the program and how we approach it. Let it also be known that without our official “gotcha covered” girl Courtney Runft, it would not have run so smoothly either. I am also deeply indebted to Margaret Morrison who spent three years assisting us on the development and design of both the youth and adult programs. I'm happy that she will be staying around as Education Consultant this year as we continue to expand. I would also like to take a moment to thank our parents for their incredible support and look forward to working closer with the new Parent Volunteer Committee in the coming months. Naturally, all this activity would not be possible without the A-Team of our Director of Operations Hjördis Linn, and Technical Director Tony Mayes. In May, our 3rd annual Spring Gala was held at the beautiful Helen Mills Event Space and brought in over $125,000 in support of the Gregory Hines Youth Scholarship Fund allowing the ATDF to continue awarding training scholarships to youth throughout the year. A very BIG thanks goes to the gala co-chairs, and ATDF board members, Deb Beard, Hoagy Carmichael and Pam Koslow. THE TAP TIMES FALL 2008our devoted development consultants Jill Alcott and Jane Penn for helping us strategize our ongoing fundraising efforts and staying the course on the development of future programming. In addition, the on-going support of our

board and their tireless efforts is keeping this organization moving, and grooving! The Tap City Youth Ensemble (TCYE) was very busy last year performing in various venues throughout the season. It was especially fun to hear Bette Midler announce to the audience during a benefit performance for her charity, "I've been watching this group for years and I'm so happy they were finally available to perform at my event". The kids were SO wonderful and again I'm SO proud of them! Tap City on Tour started with a very well received outdoor concert, “Evening Stars” at Battery Park, which was co-presented by the ATDF along with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council

and The Joyce Theater. In October, Tap City on Tour was also asked by the U.S. State Department in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in Yerevan, Armenia, to bring American Tap Dance overseas and presented performances in Gyumri, Vanadzor and Yerevan, Armenia. Performers included myself, Nate Cooper, DeWitt Fleming, Margaret Morrison, and Karen Callaway Williams. In additon, in November we performed at the River Raison Centre for Arts in Monroe, Michigan and at the Tecumseh Center for the Arts in Tecumseh, Michigan. Since 2004, Tap City on Tour has performed in more than 20 states and internationally in Armenia and Romania (October 2008), for audiences numbering over 20,000. Who would have thought that tap dance would take us to such distant parts of the world. Looking ahead to our “at home” programming, we've embarked on a tremendous expansion that includes many more ongoing classes for youth, teens and adults, and Take it to the Stage, a brand new series of weekend tap intensives taught by leading choreographers, co-curated by dancer

Chloe Arnold and yours truly. During the 2009 winter season, ATDF will introduce Sound Check, a new concert series, taking place at

Judson Memorial Church February 12th & 13th, 18th - 20th, 2009. Sound Check 2009 will inaugurate ATDF’s home-based season, a conceptual presentation showcasing new work by emerging choreographers and leading professionals. Coproduced by Hjördis Linn, Tony Mayes and myself, Sound Check was conceived to offer a taste of what is happening in the field today and will present some of the most versatile con-temporary ‘voices’. Don’t forget, Tap City, the New York City Tap Festival. This 9th year will be held July 6-11, 2009, with performances at the prestigious Joyce Theater and classes/residencies at Chelsea Studios.

Last but not least, please help me welcome Nancy Kremsdorf as our newest board member. As we continue to build an ever expanding group of supporters, ensuring the continued vitality of the American Tap Dance Foundation's legacy, I look forward to yet another year of hard work with a deeply dedicated staff and an amazing group of talented

tap enthusiasts and friends.

THE TAP TIMES FALL 2008

Looking back on my first year as director of the ATDF Youth Program, I have to say it was a busy and exciting year! We began last season with 13 youth program classes, and a growing Tap City Youth

Ensemble of approxi-mately 35 dancers. Our faculty Toni Noblett, Courtney Runft and myself, along with advisment by Margaret Morrison, worked closely all year developing and

setting standards for the curriculum and administration of the youth program. We established our new “ATDF Youth Program E-Newsletter”, which is sent out every session to our youth program students, to keep parents informed on news and developments in the program, performances and current events in the tap community. Our biggest and most exciting venture was producing our first “Tap City Youth Concert” at Symphony Space on April 13th. The concert featured approximately 120 of our youth program dancers, the TCYE, guest artists Kendrick Jones and Melinda Sullivan, as well as a live jazz trio. The show was quite a success, and we're looking forward to our 2nd annual Spring Concert on June 6th, 2009.

I am happy to report that our youth program has grown this season, adding two new faculty members, Tony Mayes and Claudia Rahardjanoto, and has expanded to offer a total of 22 classes each week. Our youth program enroll-ment has gone up approximately 23%. We are delighted to have enlisted the help of 18 of our scholarship students and TCYE dancers to serve as assistants and mentors in our weekly classes,

which will enable our teachers to be even more effective in class. New in our programming this season are exciting and enriching opportunities open to our students, including free master classes, performances, films and tap jams. Our first event was a “Shim Sham Workshop” taught by Courtney Runft and assisted by TCYE III member Emma Butensky. This class was offered to all new students who did not know the shim sham and was attended by 22 students. Future events this session include a “Sneak Peek” performance of the TCYE Young Audiences show on Nov. 23, and a “Holiday Tap Jam” on Sunday, Dec. 14th, featuring live music and treats.

The TCYE had some amazing moments last season, including 14 differ-ent performances large and small. Some of the highlights included dancing at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem as part of “Amateur Night at the Apollo”, celebrating National Tap Dance Day

at the “Tap Extravaganza”, performing at Bette Midler’s fundraising gala for the New York Restoration Project, and performing as part of Tap City, The New York City Tap Festival in “Tap Youth Tap Future” and “Tap and Song”. The ensemble worked with several wonderful guest artist choreographers, including Brenda Bufalino and Michelle Dorrance.

In 2008-09, the ensemble is going strong heading into its fourth season.

I am pleased to announce that I have an official TCYE assistant now, Tamii Sakurai. Tamii was a founding member in the ensemble in 2006, graduated last

season and is now attending college and continuing her association with TCYE. Our choreographers and guest artists lined up for this season include Josh Hilberman, Gulliem Alonso and Jean Butler, with more to come. Young Audiences New York has asked us to develop a show to be performed in NYC schools to educate audiences about the art of tap, which is now being created and developed with the help of Margaret Morrison and Tony Waag. As of October, we have 13 performances scheduled, including a featured performance at the Long Island Children’s Museum in November, as part of the “Global Shoes” event, “Sound Check” in February where one portion of an evening performance will feature the TCYE, and the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House “Second Sundays” performance series in June.

Through the Gregory Hines Youth Scholarship Fund we were able to give 60 dancers financial assistance, based on need and merit, to participate in our year-round training programs this season. Many of our students would not have the opportunity to dance without this assistance, and they are making the most of it!

THE TAP TIMES FALL 2008

The American Tap Dance Foundation (ATDF) presented the 8th annual Tap

City, the New York City Tap Festival from July 5th–11th, 2008. During seven rhythm packed days a distin-guished faculty of 44 tap dancers shared their expertise with 346 students from 24 States and 21 coun-tries. The participation

of international dancers continues to grow, this year representing 28% of the student body. A total of 95 classes were offered along with 6 informative tap talks in the studios.

Thanks to the generosity of many individual donors and loyal foundations, the Gregory Hines Youth Scholarship Fund awarded 67 scholarships to festival students 19 years and under, ensuring access to quality tap dance training for

families who cannot afford dance classes. For adult students, ATDF’s work-study program offers festival classes in exchange for lots of hard work keeping Tap City running smoothly. This year 18 amazing work study students assisted both staff and teachers. They dilegently kept the students informed and made the load-ins

and load-outs of all festival locations a breeze!

All ages of tap dancers and fans had a ball on the Boat Ride & Tap Jam, expertly hosted by Chloe Arnold and Bernice “Boom Boom” Brooks. The cruise was a joyous, lively event with two simultane-ous jams: one on the upper deck and one below, and a sponta-neous ukulele circle to add to the fun. Everyone was so engaged that when the boat came back to dock the dancing continued!

Tap City students had the opportu-nity to share their talents through the residencies offered in the Mini, Youth, Pre-Professional, Teen and Adult Programs. David Rider lead the youngest of the dancers in the Mini-Fest, showcasing their work at the youth performance. Josh Hilberman, Chloe Arnold and Karen Callaway Williams guided the youth dancers, teaching choreography that the students presented at the Youth Showcase. Jason Janas and Heather Cornell (with assistance from Chikako Iwahori) each challenged the Pre-Professional Program students with intricate choreography presented at Tap Youth/Tap Future. Barbara Duffy, Ayodele Casel, Derick K. Grant, Jared Grimes, Ernest “Brownie” Brown along with Reggio “The Hoofer” McLaughlin taught choreography that their adult students presented at the Student Showcase. In each program it was truly inspiring to

see what had been accomplished by the teachers and their students in only four days!

Over 4 days, 388 tap dancers (pro-fessionals and students) performed at Symphony Space to a total audience of

2,327. Woven into the shows were the annual Tap City Awards, presented by Tony Waag under the auspices of the ATDF Board of Directors. The Hoofer Awards went to Derick K. Grant and Tina Pratt. The Tap Preservation Award went to Ann Kilkelly. Four International Tap Dance Hall of Fame Awards were given to Ernest “Brownie” Brown for the Two-Man Comedy Tap Team Cook & Brown, Harold Cromer for the Two-Man Comedy Tap Team of Stump & Stumpy, Mable Lee and the late Dr. Jimmy Slyde. The many talented dancers of all ages presented at Tap City in Tap Forward and Tap and Song prove that the tap excellence set by the awardees will continue, grow and flourish. Hjördis Linn
