General

How Tapflo pumps workThe Tapflo diaphragm pump is driven by compressed air. The two diaphragms, connectedby a diaphragm shaft, are pushed back and forth by alternately pressurising the airchambers behind the diaphragms using an automatically cycling air valve system.

First cycle... Second cycle...

Suction (1)One diaphragm creates asuction action when beingpulled back from thehousing.

Discharge (2)The other diaphragmsimultaneously transmits theair pressure to the liquid inthe housing, pushing ittowards the discharge port.

During each cycle the airpressure on the back of thedischarging diaphragm isequal to the head pressure onthe liquid side. Tapflodiaphragm pumps cantherefore be operated againsta closed discharge valve withno adverse affect to the lifeof the diaphragms.

General

How to install Tapflo pumpsThe Tapflo pumps are flexible in their ease of installation. The in- and outlet ports areinfinitely turnable more than 180° in to fit your piping system (PE & PTFE and metalseries pumps).

FloodedThe piping system is designed with a positive suctionhead. This is the best way of installtion where it isnecessary to completely evacuate all liquid from thecontainer, or where viscous (thick) products aretransfered.

SelfprimingThe Tapflo pump is designed to pull a high vacuum. It isable to evacuate an empty suction pipe without anydamage to the pump. The suction lift is up to 5 meter(16.4 ’) from an empty suction pipe and up to 8 meter(26.2’) from a wetted pipe. The suction capabilitydepends on the pump size (see pages 17, 24, 29)

SubmergedAll Tapflo pumps may be submerged into the liquid. It isimportant to make sure that all components which arein contact with the liquid are chemically compatible. The air exhaust must be led to the athmosphere by meansof a hose.

The Tapflo pump range...

PE & PTFE seriesCompact and robust design from machined PEor PTFE. Polyethylene (PE) has a wear resistance6-7 times higher than PP and 1,5 times higherthan steel, which makes the PE pump ideal forabrasive slurries. The PTFE pump even resiststhe most aggressive liquids such as concentratednitricacid.

Metal seriesThe series consists of 5 sizes covering the cap-city range between 0 and 420 l/min. Materialsavailable are aluminium, cast iron, stainless steeland PTFE coated aluminium. The compact, smooth and simple design is common for alldifferent sizes.

Sanitary seriesThe Tapflo sanitary series is particulary desig-ned to meet the special requirements of the foodindustry. Lubrication free airvalve maintenancefree ball check system and total visual inspectionof all wetted parts. This enables safe and efficienttransfer of foods, pharmaceuticals andcosmetics.

General

Key components of the Tapflo pumpThree major components are especially vital for the function of the pump...

Long life diaphragmsThe two diaphragms are doing the work to primeand push the liquid through the pump system.Tapflo diaphragms are of sandwich compoundconstruction, superior for continuous heavy dutyservice. The solution with an integrated metalcore, provides a completely smooth surface incontact with the liquid, without any nuts orwashers. This results in no leak through and adiaphragm which is easy to keep clean. Thediaphragm is available in PTFE(food grade), EPDM, whiteEPDM (food grade), NBR(nitrile) and FKM (viton,on certain modelsonly).

Pollution free air valveThe air valve is the driving heart of the pump, distributing the compressed air to the chambersbehind the diaphragms. It is made formaintenance free duty with no lube air, thanksto the ingenious sealing system. It will not onlysave your money for lubrication, it will also saveyour environment from pollution. The Tapflo airvalve has no deadlock position – the pump willalways start automatically when air is suppliedto the pump. The valve body is made from brassor optional stainless steel AISI 316.

Ball check valvesThe Tapflo pump is fitted with four check valves, making sure that the liquid is transferred in theright direction through the pump. The valve isof ball valve type, the most simple and reliablevalve design. It has a good sealing capabilityand is easy to keep clean and to replace ifnecessary. The valve ball is available in EPDM,NBR (nitrile), PTFE, AISI 316, polyurethane andceramic to suit any kind of liquid.

PE & PTFE series

Pe & PTFE series pumpsTapflo pumps made from polyethylene (PE) or PTFE are suitable for handling almostany kind of liquid whether it is viscous, chemically aggressive or with solids.

Polyethylene pumpsPolyethylene (PE HD) has a superior wear resistance which is 6 – 7 times better than forpolypropylene (PP). This fact makes the pump suitable for handling abrasive slurriesetc. PE is resistant to most kind of aggressive chemicals such as concentrated acids andalkalis. Maximum liquid temperature is 70°C.

PTFE pumpsPTFE (virgin polytetrafluorethylene) is a thermoplastic polymer with superior chemicalresistance. The PTFE pump will handle even the most aggressive acids, for instanceconcentrated nitric acid. Maximum liquid temperature is up to 100°C.

The PE & PTFE pump range

Metal series

Metal series pumpsThe compact, smooth and simple de-sign is common for this series.Materials available are aluminium, cast iron, stainless steel and PTFEcoated aluminium.

Aluminium and cast iron pumpsFor transfer of pH-neutral fluids, both thin, thick, solid laden or abrasive. The alumi-nium and cast iron pumps are found in most fields; work shop and paint industries, purifying plants etc., to mention only a few.

AISI 316 stainless steel pumpsMade in lost wax cast method, ensuring great accuracy and finish. The stainless steelpumps combine great mechanical strength with good chemical features. AISI 316 isresistant to aggressive liquids like nitric acid and sodium hydroxide. The centre unit, which is not in contact with liquid, is made from corrosive resistant polypropylene (PP)as standard (other materials upon request).

Aluminium and cast iron pumps.Few parts – easy to maintain is themajor characteristic for thesepumps.

Tapflo pump range from stainlesssteel AISI 316, combines superiormechanical strength with chemicalresistance.

Metal series

1. Flexible installationsThe connections may be rotated 180°.Simply turn the connections to fit yourpiping system. Threaded BSP or NPTconnections is standard. Twinconnections are also available.

3. Low air consumptionThe air distribution system is designedwith shortest possible air distributionways. This eliminates ”dead spaces”,resulting in high effiencey and low airconsumption.

1/3 is enough for usYou will discover the ingenious simplicity when you maintain the pump. We use

approximately 1/3 the number of parts that our competitors use to build similar sizedpumps.

2. Powerful valveseatsThe valve seat is under constant stressfrom the movement of the valve ball.To obtain the best wear resistant, theintegrated seat is made from AISI 316stainless steel.

Active pulsation dampeners

Active pulsation dampener inPE or PTFE.

Active pulsation dampener in aluminiumor stainless steel AISI 316.

The active pulsation dampener is the mostefficient way to remove pressure variationson the discharge of the pump. The Tapflopulsation dampener works actively withcompressed air and a diaphragm, automatically setting the correct pressureto minimise the pulsations. The pulsationdampener is available for all Tapflo pumpsizes and material versions.

How it worksWhen the liquid pressure falls in the pipingsystem, the pulsation dampener supplyextra pressure to the discharge betweenthe pump strokes by displacing liquid bymeans of diaphragm movement. Thispumping action created by the dampener, decreases the pressure variations andpulsations.

This system will imme-diately alarm and shut ofthe pump at an eventualdiaphragm break. It ensuresthat no liquid will leak tothe environment or to the airsystem of the pump - aperfect system where yourequire a high level ofsafety.

The system consists of a backup diaphragm pump (TB), and a control and alarm sys-tem. Under normal operation, the chamber between the backup diaphragm and thewetted diaphragm is set to vacuum by the control system. If any of the diaphragmswould break, the pressure will rise in the vacuum chamber. The control system willthen switch of the pump and turn on the horn. This system is allowed for use also inexplosion hazardous areas, since only pneumatic components are used.

Pneumatic diaphragm alarm system

In case of a diaphragm break, the unit willstop the pump and turn on the horn.

Leaking liquid in case of a diaphragm break, will remain in the chamber between thewetted diaphragm and the backupdiaphragm. This system grants for a high levelof safety in plants where liquid is neverallowed to leak.

Pneumatic batch control unit

The pneumatic batch unit allows you to set andpump a certain number of pump strokes - all thiswithout any electricity. The system is easilyapplied on all Tapflo pumps. Only the exhaustmuffler has to modified with a hose connection. When the batch is started, the unit will count thenumber of pump strokes the pump is doing. Thepump strokes are sensed from the variation ofpressure in the air exhaust by a pressure switch (placed in the counter unit).

Filling containers of various volumes with a T50Let us say that you are using a T50 to fill containers of the sizes 5, 10 and 25 litres. What you first once have to do is to manually prime the different volumes and recordhave many strokes the pump needs. For future batching, just enter the number of strokesand press ”start”. The batch unit will start the pump, count down and finally stop thepump when the batch is finished.

AISI 316 (IP 44)

The strokes from the pump are sensedfrom the pressure of the outgoing air.The system is easy to apply on allTapflo pumps.

Just set the desired number of strokesand press ”start” and the pump willautomatically transfer the desiredvolume.

Pneumatic level control system

This ingenious system is operated with pneumaticcomponents only. The level control system may beinstalled in sumps, tanks or tubs to start and stopthe pump at certain liquid levels. This system isallowed for use also in explosion hazardous areas, thanks to the absence of electricity.

Evacuating liquid from a sumpThe end of the hose ”low” (1) (or end of extensionpipe) is placed on the desired low level in the sumpand the end of the hose ”high” (2) is placed on thehigh level position. As the liquid is reaching thehigh level hose, the pump will start and pump untilthe liquid level is reaching the end of the low levelhose. It is a very accurate system, sensing the levelswithin a few millimetres.

Tapflo Pneumix Technology

The Pneumix...was predominantly de-veloped for the paint and inkindustry where most rawmaterials in drums or contai-ners settle out over time andneed to be mixed or blendedprior to use. This usuallymeans rolling, shaking orpumping to a mixing vessel;that adds time, waste, messand expense.

The Pneumix works both asproduct transport pump as well asmixer

Increased productivity and reduced waste with PneumixThe Pneumix utilises the container the product arrives in to mix and dispense andsimply fits securely in the vessels fill hole. Increasing productivity by reducing wasteand further product handling.

Some benefits with the Pneumix...

Eliminates problems with conventional mixing

No need for pumping to mixing vessel

No paddles or rotating blades

Fully controllable pneumatic operation and control

No moving parts utilises pump power to mix & dispense

Variable agitation

No shear

No air entrainment

Closed vessel mixing system

Reduced environmental exposure

Increased product life and performance

Suits all containers up to 1000 litre IBC

No modification to vessel

Available in wide range of materials

Tapflo Pneumix Technology

How it functions…The Pneumix works both as a mixer and as a transfer pump:

Mixing modeThe discharge valve is closedand the recirculation valve isopen, to allow the product tocirculate in the container

Transfer modeThe discharge valve is openand the recirculation valve ispartially open, to both mix andto transfer the product out ofthe Pneumix

Pneumatic mixing systemOffer enclosed product handling – reducing worker or environmental exposure, spillageand contamination. Hazardous, sensitive or volatile products are securely protectedwithin their container. All contributing towards a clean, safe working environment.

Batch and mixThis system allows the product to be mixed and batched when it is needed, reducingtime, increasing product life and minimising waste.

Variable agitationMeans the mixing action can be matched to the specific product or application.

SafetyAir operated control and operation means no electrics are necessary.

Powder transfer pumps

Trouble free, safe and clean transfer of process powders

Economical comparedwith other complexpowder systems

Convenient and saferthan manual powderhandling

No start up problemsThe air induction system eli-minates powder pack upproblems when starting thepump. Air is induced to thepowder side of the pump for dif-fusion of the powder. Theinduction flow can manually beadjusted by means of a needlevalve to obtain a optimumperformance.

ReducedcontaminationThe powder is transferred in ahermetic system from the powdercontainer to your process.

Economical andcompact solutionThe Tapflo powder transfer pumpcan do the same job as manycomplex and large powdersystems. The compact design alsomakes the unit portable.

What kind of powders? The powder transfer pump will handle different types of process powders, with specificweight from 80 up to 720 kg/m3 dry weight. Generally, if the powder does not clumptogether when you squeeze it in your hand, the Tapflo powder transfer pump can beused successfully. A few examples of common powders are sintering powder, carbonblack, resins and silicones.
