Taraval Station officers will also conduct an educational outreach component to residents, businesses and visitors in an effort to decrease the number of incidents.     Dear residents and community members,

    In 2017, the Taraval District had an increase in the

    number of auto burglary incidents, but had a decrease

    in the number of residential burglary incidents. At the

    beginning of this year, Taraval Station began an on-

    going abatement effort, coupled with an educational

    outreach program to address both crimes from multiple

    fronts. Taraval Station officers will conduct operations

    in different areas of the district and will identify and/or

    apprehend subjects who are committing these types of

    crimes. Taraval Station officers will also conduct an

    educational outreach component to residents,

    businesses and visitors in an effort to decrease the

    number of incidents. Taraval Station looks forward to

    Feature Officer of the Month

    Officer Desmond Dun

    Each month Taraval Police Station features one of its officers in an effort to learn more about the men and women who police our neighborhood. This month, we interviewed

    Officer Desmond Dun.

    Irving Foot Beat Officer Desmond Dun Officer Desmond Dun, a native of San Francisco joined the SFPD over 5 years ago. He had worked at Ingleside Station, Richmond Station, Homeland Security Port Officer and currently here at Taraval Station. Officer Dun is current assigned to the Irving St foot beat. Say hi to

    This Month’s Feature Citizen

    William Barnickel

    William Barnickel 1- President for the Outer Sunset Merchants Professional Association representing merchants

    from 19th Ave-27th Ave. We are the association that brought the SF Police Credit Union

    from 20th & Noreiga to its present location.

    We are the first association that bought 10 speed bikes for the police (Taraval Station) in the

    80's. We are the only association that for the past 10 yrs in conjunction with the SFPD that

    delivers toys to families in need.

    2- Appointed by the Board of Supervisors in Jan 2016 as Commissioner Veterans Affairs for

    the City and County of San Francisco. Have done yearly job fairs for the veterans at City

    College and most importantly assisting our veterans on their benefits

    This year Nov 8th had a press conference at City Hall in collaboration with the Institute on

    Aging (lead agency) with the Department of Justice, Attorney General's Office, Dept of

    Insurance, and Social Services Agencies in San Francisco to pass into law to prosecute

    individuals who are scamming and pouching our Elder Vets in care homes and assisted living

    facilities.

    Each month Taraval Police Station features a citizen who represents the unique flavors of the Taraval Police District. This month, we interviewed William Barnickel a resident of the Sunset District.

    Definition of Suspicious Activity

    Suspicious activity is any observed behavior that could indicate a crime-related incident has

    been committed, or about to be committed. Unusual items or situations: A vehicle is parked

    in an odd location, a package/luggage is unattended, a window/door is open that is usually

    closed, or other out-of-the-ordinary situations occur.

    Examples of Suspicious Activity:

    An individual peering into vehicles, to try, and locate any valuables left unattended.

    An individual trying door handles to vehicles, and/or residences to gain access to the

    vehicle and/ or residence.

    An individual checking front doors of residences to locate any unattended packages or

    individuals following delivery trucks to see where the truck is dropping off packages.

    Definition of Community Policing

    Community policing, or community-oriented policing, is a strategy of policing that

    focuses on police building ties and working closely with members of the

    communities.

    • Homeless Outreach and Outreach to Drug Users: Taraval Station has two officers

    that coordinate with city agencies to provide outreach and assistance to

    rehabilitate those who are dependent on illegal drugs and outreach to homeless

    individuals to connect them with resources and support.

    • Foot Patrols: Taraval Station has 3 foot beat locations. These officers are assigned

    to Irving St, West Portal Ave and Ocean Ave.

    • Monthly Police Community Relations Meetings: Community Meetings are going to

    be held continuously. Officers and sergeants also attend meetings with

    merchants groups, business groups, development authorities and others.

    Concerns are voiced and addressed through problem solving.

    • Email Updates: Taraval Station will send out newsletter updates to residents in

    the District that alerts residents of crime trends, upcoming community events,

    crime prevention tips, and information on how to contact officers at the District

    Station.

    Definition of Crimes Robbery – Robbery is the taking of property from another by using force or by using fear. Assault – An assault is an unlawful attempt, couple with the present ability, to commit a violent injury on another person.

    Battery – (Misdemeanor Battery) is any willful and unlawful touching of another. (Felony Battery) is the use of force or violence up the person of another that causes serious bodily injuries. *Assault is when a person swings their arm at a person and battery is when that arm makes contact with the person.

    Aggravated Assault- Assault upon another person with a deadly weapon or instrument other than a firearm or by any means of force likely to produce great bodily injury. Burglary – The intent to enter a property to commit a grand theft, petty, theft or any felony. Grand Theft – Grand theft is theft committed when the value of the money, labor, or property taken that exceeds $950.

    Petty Theft – Theft where the value of the property taken is less than $950.

    Traffic Violations 22450(a) CVC The driver of any vehicle approaching a stop sign at the entrance to, or within, an intersection shall stop at a limit line, if marked, otherwise before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection.

    21450(a) CVC The driver of any vehicle approaching a stop sign at the entrance to, or within, an intersection shall stop at a limit line, if marked, otherwise before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection. 22350 CVC No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property. 21950(a) CVC The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection, except as otherwise provided in this chapter. 21801(a) CVC The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to

    constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with

    reasonable safety.

    Daily Crime Report :: Sun – Dec 24, 2017

    *** Not all crimes are reported in the daily report *** Date of reported incident are not always the same as date of occurrence *** Traffic Violation – Suspended Driver’s License – Cited 11:47 pm 1100 Capitol Ave Officers were on patrol and observed a vehicle which had stopped in the street and was impeding the flow of traffic. The officers conducted a traffic stop and a computer check on the driver revealed that he was on felony probation and his license had been suspended. The driver was cited.

    Assault 2:48 pm 700 Taraval St Officers responded to a report of an assault. A witness, a Safeway employee, reported that the suspect was in a checkout line and creating a scene while yelling at nearby people. Multiple members of the staff successfully escorted the suspect out of the store and onto the rooftop parking, where the suspect got into her vehicle and attempted to hit an employee on her way out of the parking lot. The suspect then left the area.

    Domestic Violence Two incidents of domestic violence; the suspects from each incident were arrested.

    Theft from Vehicles Reported 7:17 pm / 1300 Judah St

    Traffic Collision Reported 5:00 pm / 1600 32nd Ave / Vehicle vs Vehicle

    Daily Crime Report :: Mon – Dec 25, 2017

    *** Not all crimes are reported in the daily report *** Date of reported incident are not always the same as date of occurrence *** Aggravated Assault w/ Other Weapon – Arrested 6:27am Irving St & 22nd Ave Officers responded to a battery investigation on Irving St & 22nd Ave. Suspect (S1) was seen earlier in the morning delivering newspaper when another suspect (S2) unknowingly punched him. S1 did not know S2. S1 then followed S2 and struck him with a metal pipe for defensive purposes. Suspect 1 was arrested and Suspect 2 was cited.

    Investigative Detention 10:11am 100 Broadmoor Dr Officers responded to a call regarding suspicious activity by a suspect who was looking into car windows. Suspect was seen at a resident’s house, where the owner did not know the suspect. Officers located the suspect and after a computer check, it was revealed that he had a misdemeanor warrant. The suspect was not advised to report to the courts to have the warrant taken care of.

    Domestic Violence 1 incident of a restraining order violation; 1 arrest made

    Daily Crime Report :: Tue – Dec 26, 2017

    *** Not all crimes are reported in the daily report *** Date of reported incident are not always the same as date of occurrence *** Traffic Violation – Suspended Driver’s License – Cited 6:41 pm 3700 Lincoln Ave Officers were on patrol and observed a vehicle without tail lights and a brake light that did not light up when the vehicle was stopped. The officers conducted a traffic stop and a computer check on the driver revealed that his license had been suspended. The driver was unable to provide any proof of insurance. It was also revealed that the driver had been cited previously for driving under a suspended license. The driver was cited and his vehicle was towed.

    False Imprisonment – Arrested 12:15 pm 200 Sagamore St Officers responded to a report of a fight between a resident and a contractor. The victim stated that he was at the suspect’s house to repair a water heater. When the victim told the suspect that he was done with the repairs, the suspect refused to let the victim out of the house due to an improperly finished job on the water heater. The victim reported that he told the suspect that he wanted to leave multiple times but the suspect refused to let him out of the house. The suspect confirmed that the victim came to fix the water heater but wanted an invoice to figure out what was wrong but refused to provide paperwork. The suspect denied refusing to let the victim leave the house. After further investigation, the suspect was arrested.

    Daily Crime Report :: Wed – Dec 27, 2017

    *** Not all crimes are reported in the daily report *** Date of reported incident are not always the same as date of occurrence *** Robbery with Force – Carry a concealed Weapon – Arrested 4:29 pm 700 Taraval St Officers responded to Safeway regarding an assault. Responding officers arrived and located a subject matching the description of the suspect, who was later confirmed by the victim as being the suspect. The victim, a store employee, stated that the suspect had

    walked into the store and started placing multiple items of merchandise into a basket before immediately walking out of the store without paying at the registers. The victim attempted to detain the suspect by grabbing the basket but the suspect punched the victim in the face. The suspect then dropped the basket and exited the store while yelling and screaming. A search of the subject located a six inch knife in a sheath which was concealed under the suspect’s shirt along with a dagger and a replica hand gun. The suspect was arrested.

    Battery 4:49 pm 3200 20th Ave Officers responded to a report of a battery. The victim reported that he was walking in the parking lot towards his vehicle when he was bumped on the back of his leg by the suspect’s vehicle, which was backing up. The victim stated that he did not believed he was injured but wanted to alert the suspect that he had been hit by the vehicle. However, the suspect was not interested in exchanging information. The victim attempted to prevent the suspect from leaving by standing in the way but suspect then got out of the vehicle, said “excuse me” and pushed the suspect aside before driving away.

    Traffic Violation – No Driver’s License – Cited 10:35 am 37th Ave & Taraval St Officers were on patrol and observed a vehicle slowing down at an intersection with a posted stop sign but not coming to a stop until the vehicle was past the limit line and inside the crosswalk. The vehicle then did not slow down while changing lanes despite a pedestrian trying to cross the street. The officers conducted a traffic stop and a computer check on the vehicle revealed that the driver did not have a valid driver’s license. The driver was cited and the vehicle was towed.

    Traffic Violation – No Driver’s License – Cited 7:13 am Santa Clara Ave & San Anselmo Ave Officers were on patrol and observed a vehicle failing to make a stop at a posted stop sign. The officers conducted a traffic stop and a computer check revealed that the driver did not have a license. The driver was cited.

    Possession of Stolen Property – Warrant Arrest – Arrested 11:56 am 00 Majestic Ave Officers responded to a report of a possible squatter. Responding officers arrived and entered through the back yard of the house. It was observed that the dead bolt had been removed from the back door. Walking through the basement, the officers observed numerous bicycles and bicycle parts scattered around. After a further search of the house, the suspect was located. The suspect stated that he was homeless and had been invited by another person to stay at the house. The suspect said that he would help repair the bicycles that the person would bring over so they could sell them at flea markets. The suspect attempted to provide a false name but gave his true name after further investigation. A computer check revealed that the suspect had a warrant for his arrest. The suspect was arrested.
