TARGET 5 | FAMILY GAME

How to Play 1. Get ready to play:

● Mix up the cards.

● Stack them face down between players.

● Decide who goes first.

2. The first player takes the top card from the stack, turns it faceup, and reads the number.

● If the card says 5, the player keeps it.

● If the card says 1, 2, 3, or 4, the player leaves it beside the stack.

3. The next player takes the top card from the stack, places it beside the first one, and readsthe number on the card.

● If the card says 5, the player keeps it.

● If the card can be combined with the first card to make 5, the player gets to keepboth cards.

● If the card can’t be combined with the first card to make 5, the player leaves it nextto the other faceup cards.

Mom: I turned over 3. Three and 3 make 6, not 5. I have to leave both cards there.

TARGET 5 | FAMILY GAME

4. Take turns drawing cards from the top of the stack and trying to make combinations of 5.

● You can use more than two cards to make a combination of 5. For example, you canuse 1, 1, and 3 to make 5. Then you get to keep all three cards!

Hayden: I turned over 2! I can use 2 and 3 to make 5. Now I have another pair!

5. Keep playing until all the cards in the stack are used or you can’t make any morecombinations of 5. The player with the greater number of cards wins!

Hayden: I got 15 cards and you got 5, Mom. I won!

TARGET 5 | FAMILY GAME

Tips for Families  Before you play:

● Talk about numbers that add up to 5. You might use fingers on both hands to showcombinations of 5. For example, hold up 2 fingers on one hand and ask your child: Howmany more fingers should I hold up to make 5?

● Go over an example that uses more than two cards to make 5. You can use two, three, oreven four cards (2 and 2 and 1 make 5; 1 and 1 and 1 and 2 make 5). When you use morethan two cards to make 5, you get to keep all those cards. It can help you win the game!

While playing you can ask some of the following questions:

● What number are you hoping to get? Why?

● Can you see a way to combine your card with two others in our collection to make 5?

Change It Up Making even small changes to a game can invite new ways of thinking about the math. Try making one of the changes below. How did it change the way you played the game?

● Draw dots on the cards to match the numbers on each card. You can make combinationswith dots and numerals.

● Choose a different target number. You could play to a lower number such as 3 or 4 or ahigher number such as 6 or 7.

○ If playing to 3 or 4, remove the number cards with 4s (for Target 3) and 5s (forTarget 4).

○ If playing to 6 or 7, consider what cards might be useful to add. Ask your child: Whatcards would help us make 6 (7)? How many of those cards should we make?

● Try playing with 3 or 4 players.
