Page 2: Target Audience

To find out about who the target audience is for sci-fi films, I used the IMDb website to find these numbers for my research. The films I looked into were: ‘Children of Men’ – directed by Alfonso Cuarón, starring Julianne

Moore, Clive Owen and Chiwetel Ejiofor ‘Interstellar’ – directed by Christopher Nolan, starring Matthew

McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain. ‘Alien’ – directed by Ridley Scott, starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom

Skerritt and John Hurt. ‘Elysium’ – directed by Neill Blomkamp, starring Matt Damon,

Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley.

Children of Men (2006)

The film ‘Children of Men’ seems to appeal to more males than females. The comparison between total males and females that have seen and voted on the film is a very big difference considering only 40,450 females have voted on the film but 254,042 males have voted on the film. The main age that watched this movie was the age range of 18-29 which means the movie appealed more to younger males than anyone else, although there were quite a lot of votes for ages 30-44. Even though there are many votes, the overall ratings are lower than expected with the highest rating being 8.5.

Interstellar (2014)

Interstellar’, similarly to ‘Children of Men’, mostly seemed to appeal to men rather than women and the main age range that the film appealed to is ages 18-29 and this audience was mainly made up of males. There is a huge difference between total female votes (88,529) and total male votes (496,937). The ratings are slightly higher for this film with the ratings ranging from 7.7 to 9.2.

Alien (1979)

Alien mainly appeals to males also with a much bigger comparison to the females. A total of 365,738 males voted that they enjoyed the film whereas only 49,025 females voted for this film and their overall ratings from men are higher. It seems that the film is more popular with the age ranges of 18-29 and 30-44. The ratings for this film range from 8.1 to 9.1 which is quite a large range but the film still seems to be quite popular despite it being an older sci-fi.

 Elysium (2013)

Elysium seems to be the least popular film out of the four films I have chosen to look out but once again, the film appeals more to males than it does to females. The biggest audience and age range this film appeals to is males aged 18-29. The ratings for this film are a lot less than the other three films I researched which shows that it is not as popular of a sci-fi film as the ratings range from 6.3 to 7.1.

Overall, I can see by looking at these four different sci-fi films that males are more interested in sci-fi (which is also very stereotypical as it’s always seen that males prefer sci-fi to females) and the age range that seems to appeal to sci-fi most is young adults ranging from 18 to 29.
