Information that’s to the Point Good things come from Sysco VEGETABLE SOURCE March 01, 2013 Asparagus MX, Peru Markets are easier with more product coming from Mexico and light supplies from Peru. New fields are expected to start mid to late March. A market spike is expected around the Easter holiday. Broccoli CA, FL, GT Current Southern broccoli quality remains good. Cabbage FL Supplies are good with increasing demand. Quality is good. Carrots MX Market conditions are stable. Cauliflower AZ, FL. Current Southern cauliflower condition and quality remain good with occasional defects due to discoloration and riciness. Celery FL, CA Condition and quality are good, occasional defects due to cracking (down the center) and discol oration. Markets are softer. Corn FL Florida corn is harvesting with good quality reported. Cucumbers HD, MX Cucumber supplies from Honduras are extremely limited, and markets are expected to remain high until the Florida spring crop s tarts. Demand ex ceeds supplies. Eggplant FL, MX Eggplant quality is fair and Florida and Mexican markets are stronger. Green Beans FL Quality is fair with light supplies and steady markets. Demand is good. Herbs CA, FL, SA Markets are steady. Good supplies. Lettuce – Iceberg AZ Iceberg markets are active as sizing is running small. Quality issues such as epidermal peel and bleaching as noted. Lettuce – Fresh- Cut AZ, MX All lettuces are showing fair quality with stronger demand as a result of smaller sizing . Processors are lookin g for increased amounts of product limiting the market supply. Lettuce – Leaf, Green & Red AZ Markets are seeing occasional defects such as epidermal peel, light weights and blistering from the cold. Lettuce – Romaine AZ Romaine markets have strengthened considerably as quality industry wide has been affected. Epidermal peel, oxidations and internal are all noted. As for next week, under sizing, epidermal peel, and rib blight are l ikely to be our main issues. Lettuce – Spring Mix AZ Spring mix quality has stabilized. VEGETABLE SOURCE March 01, 2013

Asparagus MX, Peru Markets are easier with more product coming from Mexico

and light supplies from Peru. New fields are expected to

start mid to late March. A market spike is expected around

the Easter holiday.

Broccoli CA, FL, GT Current Southern broccoli quality remains good.

Cabbage FL Supplies are good with increasing demand. Quality is good.

Carrots MX Market conditions are stable.

Cauliflower AZ, FL. Current Southern cauliflower condition and quality remain

good with occasional defects due to discoloration and

riciness.

Celery FL, CA Condition and quality are good, occasional defects due to

cracking (down the center) and discoloration. Markets are

softer.

Corn FL Florida corn is harvesting with good quality reported.

Cucumbers HD, MX Cucumber supplies from Honduras are extremely limited,

and markets are expected to remain high until the Florida

spring crop starts. Demand exceeds supplies.

Eggplant FL, MX Eggplant quality is fair and Florida and Mexican markets are

stronger.

Green Beans FL Quality is fair with light supplies and steady markets.Demand is good.

Herbs CA, FL, SA Markets are steady. Good supplies.

Lettuce – Iceberg AZ Iceberg markets are active as sizing is running small. Quality

issues such as epidermal peel and bleaching as noted.

AZ, MX All lettuces are showing fair quality with stronger demand

as a result of smaller sizing. Processors are looking for

increased amounts of product limiting the market supply.

AZ Spring mix quality has stabilized. Supplies are good with

good quality being reported.

Onions OR, TX Yellow markets have stabilized as not a lot of product iscrossing from Mexico. Red markets are down slightly as we

wait for more volume from Mexico and Texas.

Onions – Green MX, CA Markets are down with increasing volumes.

Peas – Snow GT Markets are stable with good quality.

Peppers – Chiles FL Quality and volumes are steady with good quality.

Peppers – Green FL, MX Green Pepper markets are steady with good quality and

supplies from both Florida and Mexico.

Peppers – Red &

Gold

MX Red Peppers are getting active and markets are stronger.

Potatoes – Russet ID Markets are steady. Quality is good.Potatoes – Red,

White & Yukon

CN, US Markets are steady. Quality is good.

Potatoes – Yams MS, LA Supplies are good with great quality.

Spinach AZ Supplies and quality have improved over the last week.

Markets have stabilized with improved quality.

Squash –

Yellow/Zucchini

FL, MX Squash markets from Florida and Mexico are strong as

cooler weather has affected supplies. We are still a few

weeks away from Plant City, Florida production. Product is

short, and while we are not at the alert stage yet, we may

be shortly.Tomatoes FL, MX As indicated last week, the market for fresh tomato items

will be active for the next few weeks. Volume has

continued to decrease in both the Florida and Mexico

growing regions. We should then begin to see better

production and increasing quality as Mexico recovers from

the January cold and Florida begins traditional spring

production. The current market conditions will affect most

types of tomatoes including rounds, romas, grapes and

cherries.

FRUIT SOURCE

Apples WA, NY The Apple season continues with lower than average

supplies especially on smaller fruit.

Avocado, Hass MX, CA Markets have bumped up. Mexico has backed off of supplies,

strengthening markets. California quality is excellent and

supplies are increasing. Sizing is a struggle.

Bananas Guatemala, Costa

Rica

The supply has stabilized in the various growing regions.

Color is improving as the season progresses. Quality is good.

Berries –Blackberries

MX Markets have strengthened as Mexico is seeing rain resultingin some soft product.

Berries –

Blueberries

Chile As with Blackberries, Markets are stronger as rain is causing

quality problems such as mold and soft product. Markets are

weak but steady. Product is from Chile.

Raspberries MX, CA Quality has decreased with Mexico noting soft fruit. Quality

is good.

Berries –

Strawberries

FL, CA Florida markets are steady with good quality. Cooler

weather is expected over the weekend and may affect

harvests. Condition and quality are good for Oxnard,

occasional defects due to salmon color and white shoulders;

supplies are improving.

Citrus - Grapefruit FL, TX Quality is good. Supplies are better on larger sizes.

Citrus – Lemons CA Not much change with lemons, quality is good and fancy

fruit markets are higher across the board.

Citrus – Limes MX Quality is good with markets easing on smaller sizes. Both

quality and availability are good and demand is strong. Fancy

fruit markets are higher across the board.

Citrus – Oranges CA , Fl. Quality and availability are both excellent, especially on

smaller sizes. Demand is strong. Larger sizes are a little

tighter. We are into the peak season, however fancy fruit is a

little tight.Grapes Chile Green Grape markets have come down as quality on

Thompsons and Sugar Ones are better. Markets are high as

some Crimsons are available now; however, markets on

Flames are very low as their quality reflects.

Red Globes and Black Grapes are available.

Kiwifruit IT Quality and volume are fine.

Melon –

Cantaloupe &

Honeydew

GT, HN Cantaloupe markets have strengthened as Honduras in

winding down and Guatemala is starting. More volume is

expected next week. Honeydew quality is fair to good.

Supplies are moderate and demand is strong.Melons –

Watermelon

HD Supplies are tight as product arrives from Honduras and

Mexico. Mexico is 40% lighter in volume than previous

years. Quality has improved on seeded and seedless.

Pears WA Bosc, Anjou and Bartlett varieties are coming from

Washington. Markets are stable with quality fruit.

Pineapple Costa Rica Supplies are consistent with good quality. Brix has been

averaging 13% with average internal gold color.
