Interesting Statistics Every Seven Minutes, there is an

incidence of bullying– Adults intervene 4% of the time– Peers intervene 11% of the time

A survey of 15,686 students grade 6-10 revealed that 9% had bullied someone at least once a week and 8% reported being victims of a bully that frequently

By the age of 24, 60% of former school bullies had already been convicted at least once on a criminal charge

Intended to harm someone else Usually occurs repeatedly Involves a ‘stronger’ person targeting

Why do Kids Engage in Bullying Behavior?

Pre-disposed to aggression? It’s a learned behavior To show strength and avoid

being a victim themselves As a means of controlling

others As a way to express their

anger As a means of revenge To act out problems at home

Page 8: Targeting Bullying

How are YOU Promoting Bullying Behavior?

By recognizing and Rewarding certain groups and not others

By giving special attention to ‘standouts’ like athletes and scholars

By not confronting concerning behavior, even at home

Page 9: Targeting Bullying

Combating Bullying Address the bully and the

behavior, not just the victim– Make one victim stronger, the bully

will find another Implement prevention programs

that encourage parents, teachers, and other bystanders to report bullying instead of overlooking them

Find ways to help reduce aggression at home
