2015 TEXAN FOOTBALL GAME 2 • VS WEST TEXAS A&M

2 @TARLETONSPORTS • #TEXANNATION

THE GAMETarleton heads to Wichita Falls Saturday night in search of its first win of the season when the Texans square off against Midwestern State for a 7 p.m. kick-off against the Mustangs.

COVERING THE GAMESaturday’s contest will be aired on the Tarleton Sports Network presented by North Texas Ford Dealers. The game will be broadcast live on KTRL (90.5 FM) with Casey Hogan calling play-by-play and Keltin Wiens joining him for color commentary. Travis Smith joins the broadcast team on the sidelines. In addition to the radio feed, the game is online at www.tarletonsports.com/listenlive.

LAST TIME OUTDespite putting up 499 yards of offense, Tarleton fell to West Texas A&M 52-38 in the Lone Star Football Festival at AT&T Stadium. The 90 combined points were the second most between Tarleton and WT all time behind the 92 points scored in WT’s 59-33 win in 1994. It’s also the most combined points in the history of the Lone Star Football Festival. PRESEASON POLLTarleton checked in at No. 4 in the annual preseason poll by the Lone Star Conference. The Texans finished four points behind Midwestern State for third and three votes ahead of West Texas A&M in fifth place. Angelo State and Texas A&M-Commerce were picked as the top two teams in the LSC, respectively, when the conference hosted its Online Media Day on July 28.

TARLETON vs MIDWESTERN STATESaturday marks the 31st meeting all-time between the Texans and Mustangs, dating back to the first meeting in 1925, and Tarleton holds the lead in the series 20-9-1. Tarleton and Midwestern played four times before 1988 with the Texans going 2-1-1 in those meetings. Since Midwestern State reinstated football in 1988, the Texans have won 18 of 26 meetings including the last one in the 2014 regular season finale when Tarleton traveled to Wichita Falls and defeated the Mustangs 44-41 to claim third place in the Lone Star Conference playoffs.

INSIDE THE SERIESTarleton has been in control of the series since 2001. On Nov. 3, 2001, the Texans traveled to Wichita Falls and came away with a 44-37 win that was the first of seven straight Tarleton wins through 2009. Since that 2001 day, Tarleton has won 10 of the last 13 meetings and have topped 30 points six times over that stretch.

AFCA POLL HISTORYThe Texans had been ranked inside the AFCA Top-25 for 86 weeks since becoming a member of the NCAA Division II and the Lone Star Conference. Tarleton’s last ranking came on Sept. 15 of last season when the Texans reached No. 12 in the nation. They have since fall out of the polls but are currently receiving votes in the latest release. Tarleton’s first-ever ranking inside the AFCA Top-25 Poll was a No. 24 national ranking on Nov. 6, 2001. The Texans went on to finish that season ranked No. 10 in the nation. The Texans earned its highest ranking in school history in 2002, from Sept. 10-24, after earning the No. 6 spot for three consecutive weeks. For a complete history of Tarleton in the AFCA Top-25 Poll, see page four of the Texan Football game notes.

TEXANS UNDER FOWLERThe Texans are now 27-27 under head coach Cary Fowler and have one Lone Star Conference championship to their credit in his tenure. Fowler’s first LSC championship is the third LSC championship for the Texans in school history. Fowler is 23-19 against LSC opponents and 4-8 overall against non-conference schools.

TEXANS AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTSSince 2000, Tarleton is 13-24 when playing against a ranked opponent, with six of those wins coming against a top-25 ranked Midwestern State team. The Texans are 6-3 all-time against the Mustangs when they have been ranked. The win over West Texas A&M in least year’s opener was Tarleton’s first win against a ranked team on the road since 2009 when they beat then-No. 13 Texas A&M-Kingsville in double overtime in the first round of the 2009 NCAA playoffs.

TEXANS IN THE LSCThe Texans are 102-138 (.425) all-time in Lone Star Conference contests.

TARLETON’S SCORING STREAKThe Texans have now scored a touchdown in 49 straight games dating back to the 2010 season. The last time a Tarleton team was held without a TD came in a 65-3 loss to Abilene Christian back on Sept. 25, 2010. Tarleton has scored at least a field goal or touchdown in 57 straight games heading into Saturday’s game. The Texans have not been shutout since Nov. 8, 2008.

AMONG THE NATIONAL LEADERS• Tarleton is third in the nation in third down conversion percentage with .576%. The Texans have converted on 19 of 33 attempts on third down.• Tarleton is second in the nation in net punting yards at 42 yards. The Texans have allowed -1 return yards, which ranks fifth in the nation in fewest punt return yards allowed. Carson-Newman leads in net punting yards with 43.11• The Tarleton offense ranks 20th in the nation in total offense with 491.5 yards per game.

2015 TEXAN FOOTBALL GAME 2 • VS WEST TEXAS A&M

9 @TARLETONSPORTS • #TEXANNATION

With one Lone Star Conference Championship under his belt, Cary Fowler begins his sixth season at the helm of the Texan Football program in search of another title and more in 2015.

The Texans battled through adversity and injury in 2014 to go on to a third-place finish in the Lone Star Conference Playoffs with five wins, including four in league play. Fowler’s Texans fought to the very end, however, by pulling off a 44-41 road victory over Midwestern State in the regular season finale to end the season with momentum heading into the 2015 campaign.

In his first championship season, Fowler’s Texans got off to an incredible start in the 2013 season by winning the first five games of the season, including an epic come from behind victory against No. 4 West Texas A&M in the home opener on October 12, 2013. Tarleton was trailing 27-3 after the opening half but Fowler’s Texans held the nation’s No. 4-ranked team scoreless in the last two quarters and scored 28 unanswered points, including 21 in the fourth quarter to pull off the victory and open the campaign 5-0.

Three games later, Tarleton State went down to Texas A&M-Kingsville needing a win to secure a Lone Star Conference championship and left no doubt with a 45-20 thumping of the Javelinas. This also marks three straight seasons with a winning record for Fowler while 19 players received all-LSC recognition.

Since the start of the 2012 season, Fowler’s teams have been one of the most explosive offensive teams in the Lone Star Conference. The Texans have amassed over 9,300 yards of total offense including over 6,000 of it through the air.

In 2012, despite having one of the youngest teams in the Lone Star Conference and fighting a plague of injuries, Fowler still managed to guide the Texans to a 6-4 overall record and a 5-3 mark in conference play.

Under Fowler, Tarleton State has had at least one player every year to be offered an opportunity to continue their career at the professional level in the National Football League.

Saalim Hakim was the first to head to the professional level, leaving after the 2010 season. Hakim was signed by the Dallas Cowboys, later saw time with the New Orleans Saints and spent the entire 2013 season with the New York Jets. After the 2011 season, Nick Stephens became the next Texan to reach the pinnacle of the sport by signing a free agent contract to play quarterback for the Tennessee Titans. After a preseason pit stop with the Dallas Cowboys, Stephens has gone on to find a home with the Baltimore Ravens.

After the 2012 season, Fowler had his first player taken in the NFL Draft as the reigning LSC Defensive Lineman of the Year, Rufus Johnson, became the highest drafted Texan in school history when New Orleans took Johnson in the sixth round and signed him to a four-year contract. Johnson was active for the Saints when they played the Seattle Seahawks in the 2014 playoffs. Adrian Campbell and Cordell Valentine also had brief stints in the NFL from the 2012 team. After 2013, Dashaun Phillips signed a free agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys and moved on to compete for a spot with the New York Jets. Following the 2014 season, Fowler’s streak remained in tact when defensive tackle Chris Brown signed a free agent contract with the Atlanta Falcons.

When it comes to the fifth year head coach, there is not a shortage for people to contact regarding advice. The Texans’ leader feels that it has been a process of learning, growing, and communicating expectations with his fellow coaches and the players. He has used his coaching connections and mentors in order to better understand what it means to be a head coach of a football program.

“I have been involved in college football for the past 24 years of my life,” said Fowler. “I have seen a lot of things and coached a lot of players, but here at Tarleton, I am able to fully appreciate the coaching experience. We have the facilities, the staff, and the university that makes Tarleton football one of the premiere programs in all of Division II.”

Fowler has spent 20 years in coaching at only three schools, which is surprising considering the number of Division I coaches he has worked with, under, and over in his time in college football. With names like Houston Nutt, Denver Johnson, and Joe Pannunzio as influences, Fowler has plenty of sounding boards to bounce ideas off of in his career.

“The best thing that has happened to me is that Coach Nutt is not coaching anymore,” said Fowler. “Now I have unlimited access to him. I really use these coaches as guides and examples of coaching the right way. They have meant so much to me in my development as a coach and as a human being.”

Despite his competitive nature to be the best, at the end of the day,

winning isn’t the most important thing. “The most rewarding part of coaching is watching these kids graduate,” said Fowler. “We have a lot of first generation college students, as I was myself. My mom and dad influenced me more than anyone else and I haven’t missed a day of school or work my entire life. I want to set an example for these young men and show them that dedication and a drive to succeed are all you need to be something in life.”

The 2011 team was Fowler’s real beginning as a head coach because he was able to play the players he recruited. With that squad, Tarleton overcame a 1-5 start to finish 6-5 on the year and 5-3 in conference play with five straight victories, including big league wins over Incarnate Word, Texas A&M-Kingsville, and Angelo State. Fowler had six players earn all-conference honors, two players named all-region, and a pair of All-American performers in linebacker Marquis Wadley and defensive back Dashaun Phillips.

In 2010, Fowler completed his first season in charge of the Texans, who went 3-8 on the season. Injuries on both sides of the ball and a very tough schedule caused problems for the first year head coach, but it was just the beginning of the transition into a winning program.

In his head coaching career, Fowler has coached the LSC Defensive Back and Defensive Lineman of the Year, tallied seven first-team all-conference, 19 second-team all-LSC and 34 honorable mention all-LSC players. He has also had five all-region awards bestowed to his players and two players receive All-American honors, including Rufus Johnson who earned All-American honors from three different sources following the 2012 season. He has also had nine players named to Preseason All-American teams, including three prior to the 2014 campaign.

In 2009, Fowler helped guide the Texans to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs and a share of both the LSC Championship and the LSC South Division title. The Texan defense led the conference for most of the season and finished third in the LSC in total defense (323.4) and scoring defense (20.9). Tarleton was second in pass defense (21.61) and in interceptions (20). Tarleton was first in the league in opponents’ fourth-down conversions (22.2 percent) and second in opponents’ third-down conversions (30.2 percent).

In 2008, the Texan defensive coordinator directed a defense that was No. 1 in the league in scoring defense, allowing just 21.8 points per game. The Texans were second overall in total defense with 319.3 yards per outing while the pass defense topped the LSC after allowing just 196.9 yards through the air.

While on the Texan staff, Fowler has spent time speaking to community groups such as the Kiwanis and Optimist Clubs. He has also spent time helping the football team with community service projects such as Meals on Wheels, Fosters Home events and been involved with Refuge, a weekly Bible study at Harvey Baptist Church.

In 2007 as his last season as an assistant coach at Midwestern State before coming to Tarleton, Fowler led the No. 1 total defense in the LSC, allowing just 294.2 yards per game. The Mustangs had the top-ranked rushing defense, allowing just 93.9 yards rushing per outing, and the third-ranked passing defense, giving up just 200.3 yards per contest through the air. MSU was also the best scoring defense in the LSC, allowing just 18.6 points per game.

Fowler, who has made a name by annually constructing one of the top defenses in the LSC, was selected as the NCAA Division II Assistant Coach of the Year in 2005. The award, which was first presented in 1997, honors assistant coaches that excel in community service, commitment to the student-athlete, on-field coaching success and AFCA professional organization involvement. Fowler has been in tune with each during his collegiate coaching career.

Fowler continued his coaching successes at Midwestern State as the defensive coordinator in 2001 where he coached a pair of All-Americans including linebacker Columbus Wooley and safety Germont Jackson.

In Wichita Falls, he was very involved in the community as well, but his accomplishments on the field are just as noteworthy. Prior to joining the staff at MSU, Fowler spent nine years of association with the Murray State University football program.

In 1993 and 1994, he was a safety and standout special teams performer before moving into a graduate assistant role from 1995-96. Fowler’s role would grow into his first full-time coaching job in 1997 when he was put in charge of the Murray State secondary. He became recruiting coordinator later that year before becoming the linebackers and free safety coach in 1999.

During his four seasons as a full-time coach at Murray State, Fowler coached two All-Americans in cornerback Willie Hampton (1998) and safety Beau Guest (2000).

After two seasons at Austin Peay State in Clarksville, Tenn., Fowler transferred to Murray State (Ky.) to begin what would be a nine-year relationship with the Racers’ football program. As a prep athlete, he earned all-state honors as a four-year letter winner on the gridiron while also participating in track and baseball.

Fowler earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Murray State in 1994.He married the former Shanan Dunn in June of 2002. The Fowlers are

the proud parents of two daughters, Sophi and Bella.
