My Inspiration for
Going Back to Everest
Climbing the world’s highest
peak requires a mountain of
inspiration.
On my previous two climbs,
I’ve drawn motivation from
my parents. On Pumori, I
dedicated my efforts to my
mom and her journey of living through breast cancer.
On Elbrus, I thought often of
my dad and his long battle
with prostate cancer. For
my second attempt on
Everest, I am looking to my
Oma, my grandmother
Frida Loeffler, for the power,
confidence, and strength totackle such an enormous
challenge again.
Oma is 92. Oma has had a
hard life filled with the
challenges of beginning over
and over again. She was
orphaned at the age of six
and had to go live with anew family. She survived
World War II but lost her
home and all belongings.
After the war, sheimmigrated to Canada
beginning her life over once
again in a new country
spending her first year inindentured servitude. Oma’s
spent the last decade living
without her dear husband
with whom she shared
life for over fifty years.
If anyone in my life
knows about starting
again, starting over,
picking up pieces andgoing forward, it is my
Oma.
In celebration of Oma’s
life and love of learning
and in fulfilling a
decade’s old dream, I am
using my Everest climb
to establish an award at
Memorial University of Newfoundland that willhonour students who
have showed an
outstanding
commitment to pursuing
their own experiential
education.

An Mountain Sized
Invitation from TA
I cannot get to the top of
Everest without your
support. You have the
opportunity play a
significant part in my nextEverest climb by helpingmake it happen.
Your participation as a
sponsor will provide your
company with exposure and
recognition, the foundation
for some very unique and
meaningful marketing
campaigns, and a chance toinspire both the people of
Newfoundland andLabrador and your
employees.
Sponsorship does not
necessarily mean cash! My
needs fall into three broad
areas: Equipment + Supplies
It takes an enormous
amount of equipment and
supplies to climb Mount
Everest! I rely on generous
sponsors to provide gear
and clothing items.
Services I use travel, medical, and
media
services, in
abundance,
and depend
on thegenerosity of
professionals
and
suppliers to
accomplish my goals.
Financial
I require financial donations
to offset the permit andlogistical costs associated
with climbing Mount
Everest. My first attempt
cost $60,000. I raised $30,000 before going and had to
mortgage my house to make
up the fundraising shortfall.
The Academic Award
Donations to the Everest
2010 Mountain of Learning
Experiential EducationAward can be made to
Memorial University of
Newfoundland and are
eligible to receive a
