OWNER PERSPECTIVES ON TRAINER

BUSINESS MODEL: ATHE CURRENT SYSTEM

IS BROKEN@ by Dan Ross

The TDN recently took a lengthy dive into the business model

of the average American trainer, and asked this question:

AWhat, if anything, can be done to make this model a healthier,

more efficiently run affair?@

The answers garnered revolved around two central issues.

One concerned reduced race-day opportunities leading to

shrinking earnings, and the possible raising of day-rates to

compensate. The other concerned the possible payment of

monthly invoices up-front, to save trainers the pressure of

covering the daily expenses for a minimum of 40-45 days.

Maxfield returning following the Matt Winn | Coady

Matt Winn S. cont. from p1

Maxfield overcame a world of trouble to break his maiden at

first asking going a mile over this strip last September, rallying

from far back and exploding through the final three furlongs of

the Breeders= Futurity to stamp himself as one of the ones to

beat in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita a month

later. It wasn=t meant to be, however, as he was withdrawn on

the eve of the race and underwent surgery a few weeks

thereafter. Coronavirus threw another wrench into his early-

season preparation, but he proved Saturday that the delays

caused by the pandemic could benefit him most, pound-for-

pound.

After breaking slowly in each of his two previous starts,

Maxfield was put straight into the race by Jose Ortiz from the

eight hole in field reduced to 10 by a pair of scratches and was

far handier than ever before in the run around the first turn

before settling at the back of the leading group entering the

backstretch. Longshot Celtic Striker (Congrats) showed the way

from the two path, as Pneumatic was ridden to hold a spot at

the fence and Ny Traffic three deep. Celtic Striker was not

surprisingly one of the first beaten, leaving Pneumatic and Ny

Traffic heads apart at the three-eighths marker, but Maxfield

looked up and down at that juncture before jumping into the

bridle nearing the stretch. Splitting the luckless duo of

Attachment Rate (Hard Spun) and Major Fed (Ghostzapper) at

the head of the lane, Maxfield flew down the center of the

track, was bothered by a wayward Ny Traffic in the final 100

yards and came away to score comfortably in the end.

AThe start is a key part of the race,@ Ortiz commented. ALast

time I worked him out of the gate at Keeneland he worked

better. He=s really matured a lot. If you can keep breaking like he

did today and be in a spot like he did, he=s going to be a really

nice horse.@

Pedigree Notes:

Maxfield is the second foal from his dam, a winning daughter

of MGSW Caress, responsible for GISW and fellow Breeders=

Futurity--a Grade II in 2002--hero Sky Mesa (Pulpit) and

MGSW/GISP Golden Velvet (Seeking the Gold), the dam of GSW

turfer Lucullan (Hard Spun), GSW Innovative Idea (Bernardini)

and SP Embossed (Medaglia d=Oro). Third dam La Affirmed was

a half-sister to champion and GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies

winner Outstandingly (Exclusive Native) and produced Caress=s

GSW/MGISP full-sister Country Cat; her full-brother Bernstein,

sire of Tepin; and MGSW/GISP Della Francesca (Danzig). Velvety

is the dam of a 2-year-old Medaglia d=Oro colt, a yearling filly by

the same sire and dropped a full-brother to Maxfield Apr. 4 of

Owner Perspective on Trainers Business Model cont. from p1

Other topics raised included bureaucratic red-tape that makes

the costs of running a business in certain states onerous, the

streamlining of labor laws by re-labeling backstretch workers

"agricultural" employees and possible changes to trainer

licensing tests requiring an understanding in business

fundamentals.

Absent from that initial discussion were the voices from those

who pay the bills, and so today, we've turned to the owners and

owner-breeders for their perspective. The following remarks

have been distilled from much longer conversations and edited

for brevity and clarity.

Greg Avioli, president and CEO of the Thoroughbred Owners of

California (TOC)

"I personally believe that the current system is broken," said

Avoili. "We have hundreds of individual licensed trainers in

California, many of whom do not earn subsistence-level income

from their purse generation. I don't think that's a sustainable

system into the future, and I think the primary indicator of that

is: talk to the trainers. How many trainers will tell you they're

not making it economically? It's a significant number."

Avioli broke the issue down in California to rudimentary

"back-of-the-napkin" math. If the average day-rate in California

is $100, the monthly cost of training the roughly 3200 or so

horses in the state works out to some $10 million and around

$120 million annually. "It's an extraordinary amount of money,"

he said.

What's more, annually, California purses work out to about

$125 million, which leaves "a paltry" $12 million to the trainer's

share of the purses. Given the sheer number of trainers in

California who win a relatively small number of races annually, "I

think the economics of it are going to have to change for the

trainer's benefit," said Avioli.

Our original story detailed the business model in Hong Kong--a

centralized system whereby the Hong Kong Jockey Club handles

many of the typical bookkeeping tasks left to the trainer here in

the U.S., like payroll management and monthly invoicing of

owners.

According to Avioli, certain aspects of the Hong Kong model

make "economic sense" from a cost-saving standpoint. One of

those possible avenues surrounds procurement of goods.

"We have hundreds of different trainers buying the same

supplies, right? We have people buying tack, buying feed,

buying medications, and none of it is centralized," he said. "By

definition, we're losing out on cost efficiencies."

Another area concerns the "inordinate amount of time"

trainers spend bill collecting, said Avioli.

"That's a waste out of the system," he added. "I'd be

fascinated to know how much time trainers spend every week

not training horses and trying to collect money."

Of course, the Hong Kong system presents a stark departure

from the U.S. model which is attractive to many due to its

"free-market" economic framework. This represents no

insignificant barrier to change, Avioli acknowledged. Another

factor to consider is scale.

"How does the Hong Kong model, which works at the scale

they run at two racetracks, work here?" he said. "There are

many advantages they have in terms of efficiencies that we

don't have built in."

Craig Bernick | Keeneland photo

Owner Perspective on Trainers Business Model cont.

But given the stark financial situation that many trainers face,

exacerbated by the massive revenue losses through COVID-19,

broad efficiencies are an imperative if the industry is to survive

into the long-term, said Avoili. And such cost-saving measures

are achievable, he added, pointing to the changes made a

couple of years ago to the state's vanning program which

resulted in a 40% reduction in costs.

"Because the trainers are such a critical part of the game, you

have to find a sustainable model," Avioli said. "And when you

look at the amount of money that in the aggregate is being paid,

you would think that there would be many opportunities for

efficiencies that would provide more compensation to the

trainers."

Craig Bernick, president and chief executive officer of Glen Hill

Farm

"When I read the trainer article, I think everything they said

makes sense," said Bernick. "The whole business has changed.

You can debate whether it's for the better or worse, but you

can't argue it hasn't changed. So, everybody has to react to how

the business is now."

The path to a more equitable business model for trainers, said

Bernick, is to make broader structural changes to the industry so

that the incentives are shared more equally--and these

incentives needn't necessarily be financial.

"Here's the problem: People buy products, whatever it is,

because they want to get enjoyment and use out of those

products. So, people don't go into the horse business so that

trainers and all the people who support the trainers--the

suppliers and the feed companies--can make a great living.

That's not a compelling reason to buy a Thoroughbred," he said.

"And the way to get business isn't to raise the cost on the

person paying for it," Bernick added. "The way to get business is

to better the experience. And the whole sport needs to

understand that a big reason that we're in this predicament is

because we aren't giving horse owners experiences that they

used to get and we need to give for them to buy horses."

To frame his argument, Bernick turned to Europe, where the

prize money on any ordinary day doesn't compare to the U.S.,

but where "they're giving an experience to the people that pay

for the show that makes them want to keep participating," he

said. "It's an interesting experience, it's a great day out, and you

have an expectation of what it's going to be there. Over here, in

some ways it's less exciting."

Another important factor? The financial expectations that

owners bring to the game, along with the way influential players

forge and shape these expectations, said Bernick.

"There are no fewer billionaires in the horse business today

than there were 20 years ago. But it seems that so many of

them are trying to make money. They've got business models.

They've got stud farms. They've got trading companies. They're

trying to make money by creating value out of horses, and that

makes racing the horses less of a priority," Bernick said.

"The agents have always known how to select good horses,

but they've changed the model so that instead of winning

trophies, they're trying to make money and make a return on

capital," said Bernick. "That's fine, but at the end of the day, it's

a horse racing business and not a horse-trading business. That's

why we breed."

In terms of more immediate possible change, Bernick said that

he was open to the idea of paying his monthly bills up-front, as

opposed to the end of the cycle. "I don't mind doing that," he

said.

"Believe me, I get that with a lot of trainers they're trying to

make a living, and the guy who owns the horses is a

multi-millionaire and he's not paying his bill. I get it, and that's a

problem. But until they fix horseracing, then horse training is

not going to be a great job," Bernick said. Cont. p6

Carrie Brogden | Keeneland photo

Owner Perspective on Trainers Business Model cont.

Carrie Brogden, Machmer Hall Farm

"I understand it all--I understand the quandary people are in.

These suckers are expensive, and nothing goes down. Feed

prices and everything keep going up, up, up. So, let's be honest--

with the racehorses, we're just trying to break even," said

Brogden.

"And it's hard to raise day-rates, be proactive and ask people

to pre-pay in a situation where people don't really need to race

horses," Brogden added, alluding to the economic hit from the

coronavirus. "Ultimately, we produce a luxury item. You need a

house. You need to eat. You need to pay your electric bill. You

need a car to get to work. But no one needs a racehorse."

All of which explains why--like Bernick--Brogden stresses the

bigger picture, and the need for broader structural reform

within the industry. This begins with a centralized ruling body,

even if there are significant "hurdles" standing in the way of that

ever happening, she added.

"If everyone was on the same page and was doing everything

for the good of the sport and the business, I believe things

would be done very differently," she said. "I think the crux of all

of the issues in the industry comes from the fact that we don't

have a unified voice. No federal racing commission. No

commissioner."

Within this broader unified model are ways for the industry to

work together to improve the owner experience, the dividends

from which would trickle down to the trainers--better harmony,

for example, between owner and trainer organizations to entice

new players into the sport and educate them on the financial

nuances (and likely drawbacks) of the game, said Brogden.

"There are too many chefs in the kitchen. Trainers are their

own chefs in their particular kitchens. The breeders are their

own chef. Then you have the owners--most of them own their

own companies, are very successful in their own right," she said.

"Everyone is very independent, very strong. There are a lot of

super successful people in this industry, that's why this is so

challenging."

One of those challenges, said Brogden, is to help foster a

philosophical shift within the industry, lessening the emphasis

on possible financial returns and shining a brighter light on those

other less remunerative rewards the sport offers.

"The biggest shift has occurred from this industry being a sport

[back] in the 1980s to now, when so many people are in it to

make money," she said. "Well, it's damned hard to make money

with racehorses. You get the lucky ones, but that shouldn't

alone be why we're in it."

In the original story, Kiaran McLaughlin raised the issue of

syndicates and the financial arrangements pushed by some of

these influential groups.

"Many, many horse owners today are in syndicates that don't

want any bills," said McLaughlin. "Many syndicates say, 'you pay

all the bills, we'll give you 60-40 [from earnings] to train.' So,

when you open up that can of worms, talk about disastrous

when there's no racing. You can't earn enough to pay any bills."

While Brogden sees syndicates as an avenue to expand the

sport, she said she understands how they're under pressure to

"produce" to remain relevant--a nod, again, to the philosophical

industry shift from a sport to a business. "There's always the

'what have you done for me lately' mentality, so they are under

constant pressure to have the next 'big' Saturday horse."

Brogden added: "People always say, 'there's a shortage of

owners.' And there is. But the reason for this shortage of owners

is so huge and overwhelming, and there's no mechanism to fix

this because we have no one person ultimately in charge."

Beaten three-parts of a length into second in this event last

year, United dropped his head when it mattered most to go one

better in Saturday=s GI Charles Whittingham S. at Santa Anita.

East Coast raider Rockemperor was on the losing end of the

photo finish, but was demoted to third after exchanging bumps

in upper stretch with Originaire. After a second lengthy

deliberation on the afternoon, stewards ruled that the original

third-place finisher was inconvenienced enough to have lost a

chance at a better placing.

United broke alertly and dropped his head onto his chest for

Flavien Prat, and the duo sat second, allowing longshot Synthesis

(First Samurai) to lob along up front. Originaire raced in the

second flight of horses, while Rockemperor settled last but one.

Positions were largely unchanged through the middle stages of

the Whittingham, though Originaire claimed a clear third and

Rockemperor had crept a bit closer as they raced into the turn.

United swatted away Synthesis nearing the stretch, but had

company in the form of Originaire and a three-deep

Rockemperor. The latter did the better work through the final

furlong and looked to have momentum enough to win, but the

last September, United outran odds of 51-1 and put a late scare

last time in the Feb. 1 GII San Marcos S. over Saturday=s course

behind Sparky Ville and Cistron (The Factor), who threw down

through a quarter in :21.07. Content to allow those two to knock

heads around the turn, Wildman Jack re-rallied and loomed four

deep into the stretch. Sparky Ville was giving the rest something

to think about as he held firm into the final sixteenth of a mile,

but Wildman Jack dug down resiliently and was the recipient of

a fortuitous bob despite drifting in some late. Stubbins was

attempting to split horses, but was taken up and could do no

better than third. Cistron also appeared to be hampered by

Wildman Jack, but stewards ultimately ruled that Stubbins and

Cistron Awere already in tight when the incident occurred@ and

the result was allowed to stand.

Winner of three of five starts last season, all in turf sprints,

Wildman Jack was a member of a ground-breaking Doug O=Neill

string sent to Dubai over the winter. The bay gave an excellent

account of himself in a Feb. 6 handicap over seven furlongs that

perhaps stretched his stamina, but he bounced back to become

the first American-trained winner of a turf race of any variety in

Dubai in the Nad al Sheba Sprint. He was ticketed for the G1 Al

Quoz Sprint, only to have the Dubai World Cup meeting

canceled at the 11th hour.

Pedigree Notes:

One of three graded winners for his successful young sire,

Wildman Jack is a full-brother to the 3-year-old colt McWherter,

a 2-year-old full-brother and a yearling filly by English Channel.

LONGACRES MILE ANCHORS EMERALD STAKES Officials at Emerald Downs in Auburn, Washington, have

released a revised stakes schedule for a 44-day meeting that

runs June 22 through Oct. 4.

The 85th running of the $100,000 GIII Longacres Mile S., as

usual, is the focal point of the meet, but has been moved back

to be run Sept. 13 on a program that also includes the Emerald

Distaff S. The richest of the 14 remaining stakes is the $60,000

Gottstein Futurity S. for the 2-year-olds on closing day. The

schedule features six stakes for 3-year-olds and up (three apiece

for older horses and older fillies and mares), four stakes for

3-year-olds (two apiece for c/geldings and fillies) and five for

2-year-olds (two apiece for c/g and fillies, and one open).

Tracking from fourth through a :24.16 opening quarter and a

from Abscond. Pass the Plate rounded out the trifecta.

A close-up third in her career bow at Saratoga last July, the

chestnut earned >TDN Rising Star= honors with an emphatic win

in an off-turf test up state in August. Victorious in Laurel's Selima

S. a month later, she was overlooked at 13-1 in the GI Breeders'

SYNDICATES RIDING OUTCOVID STORM

By Kelsey Riley

Those that invest in racehorse ownership are typically hooked

by the thrill of competition and the camaraderie that comes

along with the team effort it takes to get a horse into the

winner=s enclosure. So what happens when those key elements

are removed?

Those that stick around in the racing game would have to be

resilient by nature or have developed thick skin along the way,

and Sam Hoskins, a manager of syndicate groups Kennet Valley

Thoroughbreds and Hot To Trot Racing, said, thankfully, his

syndicate members have been game to wait out racing=s

postponement due to COVID-19.

AWe=ve been extremely lucky,@ Hoskins said. AA couple of

people in the Kennet Valley Syndicates [generally the more

expensive of the two] were struggling a bit with the spring top-

ups which started in April, but we=ve tried to look after them as

best we can and help them pay in time. But in general, apart

from those couple of cases we=ve been extremely lucky. In

general, we don=t have monthly direct debit and I think for the

moment we=re lucky that generally they=ve paid up front. I

suspect quite a few of our people play within their means and

are fairly sensible about it, and we=ve been lucky as a result.@

BHA PUBLISHES SUMMER FIXTURES, SAFETY

GUIDELINES The British Horseracing Authority has published a provisional

fixture list for the remainder of June, July and August. Racing=s

governing body had previously released the programme for

racing=s first week of resumption from June 1, and says the full

programme for the remainder of June will be published on

Monday. The BHA also published its guidelines for the safe

resumption of racing.

AWe had originally hoped to complete and publish the June

race programme this week, however with elements of this still

to be finalised, doing so would have provided racecourses and

participants with an incomplete picture of how the provisional

programme will look, and one that would in all likelihood need

to be amended subsequent to publication,@ the BHA=s release

read. Key meetings Glorious Goodwood and York Ebor remain

unchanged from their original schedule. Fixtures in Scotland and

Wales have been provisionally scheduled and will be confirmed

following further consultation with those governments on

timelines for potential resumption. Cont. p4

Hot To Trot Racing | Emma Berry

Syndicates Riding Out COVID Storm cont. from p1

Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds offers shares in a single horse

broken down into 16 shares in the high four-figures each and

has 12 horses on the books. It is best known for campaigning

triple group-winning sprinter Magical Memory (Ire) (Zebedee

{GB}) and the multiple group winner and G1 Lockinge S. second

Tullius (Ire) (Le Vie Dei Colori {GB}). Hot To Trot is a larger

syndicate, capped at 80 investors per group with a single share

price of ,2,095. Most of its horses are leased, with around five

in training at any given time. The best horse to carry the Hot To

Trot colours has been the 2017 G2 Queen Mary S. and G2 Flying

Childers S. winner Heartache (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}), and its 2019

G3 Coral Charge winner Kurious (GB) (Kuroshio {Aus}) has Group

1 ambitions in 2020.

Hoskins said the pandemic and subsequent lockdown hit just

as his teams were gearing up for their high season.

AIt=s been very surreal, really,@ he said. AEverything sort of

came to a halt just after the Cheltenham Festival in mid-March

and it was just about the time when traditionally our syndicates

would really spring into life; not so much on the racecourse, but

we would do a lot of hosting stable visits to see our horses.

AWe would do a lot of different social events like pre-season

lunches; we=d have visits to the Grand National meeting at

Aintree and do a walk of the course up there. We=d do a trip to

the Punchestown races for our members and everything has just

been postponed. It=s very strange because it would be one of

the most social times of the year for everyone, and the reason

people buy a share in a racehorse, aside from the racecourse

action, is the social part of it, and we are an extremely social

group in both of the syndicates. It=s gone from so much planned

to nothing and it=s bizarre, really.@

The disappearance of racing and those social opportunities has

meant that a few remaining shares have thus far gone unsold.

Hoskins said he thinks the real impact may become apparent

later in the year, and it could result in the tweaking of business

plans.

AFrom a negative financial viewpoint we buy all of our

yearlings for Kennet Valley on spec and we=d usually rely on a bit

of a spring wax from mid-March to the start of May where we

would sell a few remaining scattered shares on the various

social days,@ he explained. AWe had a few shares left this year

and it was impossible; it was never going to happen.

Cont. p3

TDN EUROPE • PAGE 3 OF 11 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • 24 MAY 2020

Kennet Valley=s Magical Memory | Racing Post

AWe perhaps have equity in a couple 2-year-olds that we may

not have had in previous years and in Hot To Trot we had a few

remaining memberships to the various syndicates and we=re

probably 10% down on average on those, but compared to so

many people we=re very lucky.

AI think the impact might sink in in the autumn when we have

to evaluate demands for next year. I hope we won=t be down

too much and I=m optimistic that for a lot of people this is their

hobby--they love it and I=m hoping it won=t be impacted much.

But we do need to be very careful about estimating demands

and making sure we buy according to the demand we have.

More of a pre-selling structure for Kennet Valley in particular

might be needed.@

While syndicate members have had to socially distance,

Hoskins said the managers and trainers have harnessed

technology to keep them connected, something he said he sees

as a silver lining of a difficult situation.

AI think there is a positive to take out of this,@ he said. AThe

communication from our trainers--the level and quality--has

really gone up. I think as syndicators we=ve really had to lift our

game as well. Technologically we=ve been doing things that we

probably wouldn=t have dreamt of doing a year ago. We have a

Zoom webinar set up with Cornelius Lysaght, who is the former

BBC racing correspondent; Ed Walker, who is one of the rising

stars in the training ranks, and Harry Charlton, who is assistant

to his father Roger, who is one of the leading trainers over here

and trainer of Quadrilateral, who is one of the favourites for the

1000 Guineas. We have those lined up and we=ll have 80 to 100

of our members coming in on a Zoom conversation.

Cont.

In ownership here, especially among syndicates, there is a

good percentage of those who are retirees to whom technology

wouldn=t come as naturally, so it=s a pretty good effort and

they=ve all adapted amazingly and I think really appreciated the

few things we=ve done so far to try to get them hearing from the

horse=s mouth rather than hearing all my blurbs via text and

audio. It=s quite nice for them to hear an update from the

horse=s mouth itself and hear how fast--or slow--their horse may

be.@

Hoskins said that while the business of syndicates has come a

long way in the eight years he has been involved on a

management level, he would like to see racecourses make

further commitments to catering to large ownership groups.

AThere is quite a disparity among how our racecourses here

handle [syndicates],@ he said. ASome of the racecourses cater for

them better in terms of infrastructure to deal with the numbers

of people coming racing, but I certainly believe it=s something

we=ve got to really encourage people to get involved with,

because so many big [owners] have come in via syndicates to

get into sole ownership, and also just to spread the word. If we

can get people involved in ownership even if they haven=t got

the financial means to own a horse outright, they can get

involved by taking a 10% share in a horse and having a good

time, and they=ll bring in their friends who perhaps have more

financial means and they=ll own a horse outright. Someone who

has a 10% share in 10 horses has just the same industry impact

as someone who owns one horse outright. I think it=s something

we really need to promote. I think racing here is sort of

perceived as a rich man=s game and I think every story of the

normal people taking part and owning a horse that can go beat

the big boys on the track is a really good story.@

With racing in Britain expected to kick off again on June 1,

Hoskins said his teams have a few runners that could make

some noise, including the aforementioned Magical Memory,

who returns off a layoff of more than two years.

AKennet Valley especially has some serious strength and

depth,@ Hoskins said. AMagical Memory is a dual Group 2 winner

himself and he=s been off with an injury but he=s come back

aged eight and is showing the same verve on the gallops and

we=re really hopeful he could be having a prep run in the first

week back and could go and run in something like the

Wokingham at Royal Ascot.

AWe have a very nice 4-year-old called Sir Busker, who is a Sir

Prancealot who is very progressive; he=s rated 92 and he=d need

to go and win on his comeback to warrant a place at Royal

Ascot, but he=s capable of decent things in the autumn and

hopefully he can scale the ladder into stakes company. We have

another Sir Prancealot called Dance Fever who is unbeaten in

three [starts] and he=s extremely exciting.

AHe=s rated 91 but he=s capable of a lot more this season so

we=re very hopeful. With Hot To Trot we have a very exciting

filly called Kurious who won the Coral Charge on her last start.

She could run in the [G3] Palace House at Newmarket during the

Guineas meeting the first weekend back and then possibly the

[G1] King=s Stand at Royal Ascot. Longer term something like the

[G1] Flying Five at The Curragh--which is a stiff five which suited

her at Sandown and where she=d possibly get softer ground--

could be her big shout. Kurious has a live hope of certainly being

competitive in Group 1 company, so it=s very exciting.@

While the Kennet Valley and Hot To Trot syndicate members

will, like all other owners, be resigned to watching from home

for the foreseeable future, Hoskins said he expects an electric

atmosphere on track when the day comes that patrons are

permitted again.

AI think when everything comes back there will be such a

feeling of good will and it=ll be really good fun,@ he said. AI

suspect even the smaller meetings will be very good

atmospheres. People love going racing in this country and

people will just be longing to get back on course when we=ve got

the green light.@

BHA Publishes Summer Fixtures, Safety Guidelines

cont. from p1

Seventy-two hour declarations will be in place from June 1;

fields will be limited to 12 runners for non-pattern races but not

for listed and pattern races; and, as previously announced,

international runners will be permitted for the three Group 1s

during the first fortnight after resumption, with the plan to open

that to all pattern and listed races from June 15 onward.

With regards to the safety guidelines, the BHA=s Chief

Regulatory Officer Brant Dunshea said, ARacing has been able to

develop its guidelines based on our experience of operating

bio-secure environments to control the spread of infection in

horses, and a robust approach to regulation and enforcing the

rules. Our trainers, jockeys and staff carry out their roles in a

highly disciplined way because working with horses always

carries risks. I am very confident they will adapt quickly to this

new set of measures designed to protect them from

transmission of the virus.@

ITALY GETS MONDAY GO-AHEAD

Racing in Italy is set to resume on Monday, with purse levels

maintained and with Classic action kicking off with the Italian

Guineas=, the G3 Premio Regina Elena and the G3 Premio Parioli,

on June 14. The G2 Italian Oaks will be staged on July 5, and the

G2 Italian Derby on July 12. Pivotal in securing the resumption of

racing were jockey agent Stefano Pugliese, who led a

demonstration that drew around 70 trainers, jockeys, grooms

and owners in front of the Milan Prefecture; and Giuseppe

L=Abbate and Teresa Bellanova of the Ministry of Agriculture.

NICA PREVAILS IN BADENER MEILE Baden-Baden made a welcome return to the European racing

scene on Sunday and it was the mare Nica (Ger) (Kamsin {Ger})

who proved the headline act when battling to a hard-fought win

in the G2 pferdewetten.de - Badener Meile. Ridden prominently

from the outset by Adrie de Vries, the 23-5 shot had Aviateur

(Fr) (Intense Focus) to contend with in the run to the line but

mastered that rival in the shade of the post to score by a short

head, with three lengths back to Ninario (Ger) (Areion {Ger}) in

third. Despite expectations surrounding the 11-10 favourite

Axana (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), she proved a disappointment

when a non-threatening sixth.

Nica was not winning out of turn, having posted a third placing

in the G2 Meilen Trophy at Dusseldorf in July and in this track=s

G2 Oettingen-Rennen in September. Well beaten when third

behind Jin Jin (Ire) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}) and Axana on her

comeback in the May 7 Listed Grosse Hannoversche

Stutenmeile, the grey is clearly suited by the demands of this

turning mile.

Pedigree Notes Nica is the first foal out of the dual listed-placed Narrika (Ger)

(Santiago {Ger}), a daughter of another who was placed twice at

that level in Niala (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}). The fourth dam Night

For Dancers (GB) (Night Shift) was third in this when it was a

listed contest. Narrika=s yearling filly by Feuerblitz (Ger) is

named North Fire (Ger).

NAMOS AT THE DOUBLE In another tight finale at Baden-Baden on Sunday, Stall

Namaskar=s Namos (Ger) (Medicean {GB}) made it count late to

register back-to-back wins in the G3 Preis der Annette Hellwig

Stiftung - Silberne Peitsche. Third on his return in the May 7

Listed Grosser Hannoverscher Sprintpreis, the 23-10 second

favourite tracked the early pace with menace and was roused by

Wladimir Panov to overcome K Club (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) in the

last 50 metres and hold on by a short head, with 3/4 of a length

back to Majestic Colt (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}) in third. Causing a

surprise when turning over hotshot The Right Man (GB) (Lope de

Vega {Ire}) in this 12 months ago, Namos was on the premises

when fifth behind Too Darn Hot (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G1

Prix Jean Prat over seven furlongs at Deauville in July.

RACING ACTION ESCALATES SUNDAY As European racing edges nearer to June=s baptism of fire,

Sunday sees an escalation of the preliminaries with the G2

Kronimus-Grosser Preis der Badischen Wirtschaft taking centre

stage of the action across Germany and France. Baden-Baden=s

truncated Spring meeting concludes here, with Stall Salzburg=s

Quest the Moon (Ger) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) favourite for the

feature. Successful in the G3 Prix du Lys at ParisLongchamp last

May, the bay followed that effort with a fourth in Hamburg=s G1

Deutsches Derby and third in the G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis at

Munich in July before flattening out when last of five in the G2

Prix Niel back at ParisLongchamp in September. He meets the

2017 G1 Deutsches Derby and G1 Preis von Europa hero

Windstoss (Ger) (Shirocco {Ger}), who was third to the re-

opposing Itobo (Ger) (Areion {Ger}) in this 12 months ago and

who warmed up for this latest attempt with a second in

Cologne=s G2 Carl Jaspers-Preis May 8.

Perhaps more intriguingly, the fixture=s G3 Racebets.de-

Derby-Trial Fruhjahrspreis offers Deutsches Derby prospects the

chance to get on that particular road. Gestut Ittlingen=s Palao

(Ger) (Champs Elysees {GB}) will provide further clues as to the

status of Wonderful Moon (Ger) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) whom he

trailed when third in the May 8 G3 Cologne Classic. Henk

Grewe=s formidable stable is represented by the impression 10-

furlong Mulheim maiden winner Adrian (Ger) (Reliable Man

{GB}) and Eckhard Sauren=s Only the Brave (Fr) (Iffraaj {GB}),

who beat some representatives of the major French stables on

his sole start in testing ground over nine furlongs at

ParisLongchamp in October. Over at Deauville, the stayers get

their opportunity in the G3 Prix de Barbeville where George

Strawbridge=s Call the Wind (GB) (Frankel {GB}) returns to home

turf after his success in Riyadh=s Longines Turf H. Feb. 29.

PAT HEALYWho has been the biggest inspiration in your career?

PH: My dad, Liam, and the English photographer Ed Byrne were

great inspirations. My dad instilled into me a great work ethic

and a great way of dealing with people through business. Ed was

always fantastic with advice and also looked after me so well. He

made sure I was always sorted for everything on my first trips to

Busy at Cagnes-sur-Mer before the confinement period,

of Merci Beaucoup (Ger) (Bertolini), the February-foaled dark

bay is a full-sister to the unraced 2-year-old filly Mrs Pollifax

EXULTANT LOOKS TO >CRUZ= IN CHAMPIONS

AND CHATER CUP by Alan Carasso

Just two trainers account for the seven runners signed on for

Sunday=s final Group 1 of the season in Hong Kong, the Standard

Chartered Champions and Chater Cup over the metric mile and a

half. One of them, the legendary Tony Cruz, sends out the three

top-rated runners, including Exultant (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), who--

with a successful defence of his title--could earn front-runner

status for local Horse of the Year.

As strong as even in 2019-2020, the 6-year-old was third when

looking for the repeat in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Vase this

past December, but has nevertheless won half of his six trips

postward, including tough-as-teak defeat of stablemate Furore

(NZ) (Pierro {Aus}) in the G1 FWD QE II Cup (2000m) Apr. 26.

While Exultant is some 11 pounds clear of Furore on ratings,

Cruz is slightly worried about underfoot conditions Sunday

afternoon.

AI don=t want a downpour, that=s my concern,@ Cruz, looking

for an eighth C&C in the last nine years, told the HKJC=s David

Morgan. AAs long as the track is good to firm, as normal,

Exultant should win this race again. But I want that normal

track!@ he said.

John Moore sends out the balance of the field in his final Hong

Kong Group 1 prior to his compulsory retirement at season=s

end. Chefano (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}) got away with cheap sections

in besting this year=s BMW Hong Kong Derby fourth Savvy Nine

(Fr) (Anodin {Ire}) in the G3 Queen Mother Memorial Cup over

course and distance May 3, but the latter is better backed to

reverse placings with Joao Moreira back aboard. Eagle Way

(Aus) (More Than Ready), third in this event in 2017, could be

making the final appearance of his career, while fellow 7-year-

old Helene Charisma (Fr) (Air Chief Marshal {Ire})--third to

Chefano in the Queen Mother last time--rounds out the Moore

foursome.

KODIAC GELDING TOPS VIRUS-IMPACTED

HK INTERNATIONAL SALE by Alan Carasso

The first of two sessions of the Hong Kong International Sale

took place Saturday morning in the parade ring at Sha Tin

Racecourse, having been postponed from Hong Kong Derby

weekend in mid-March owing to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Some 16 lots, purchased in Europe and South America, were

scheduled to go under the hammer before five withdrawals

earlier in the week left 11 ready-to-run gallopers to be offered.

Owner Kerm Din, who campaigned one of the HKIS=s most

notable graduates in the form of >TDN Rising Star= and MG1SW

Pakistan Star (Ger) (Shamardal) (HK$6 million in 2016), struck

the biggest blow of the morning when going to HK$6.5 million

for lot 11, a 3-year-old gelded son of Tally-Ho Stud=s Kodiac (GB)

out of the Group 3-placed Coolnagree (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

The Jan. 17 foal, bred by the Burns family=s Lodge Park Stud,

was acquired for 525,000gns at the 2018 Tattersalls October

sale and is a maternal grandson of Win Cash (Ire) (Alhaarth

{Ire}), a half-sister to two-time Hong Kong champion sprinter

Lucky Nine (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and his Japanese Group 3-

winning half-brother Teehaff (Jpn) (Storming Home {GB}).

Down the years, Exceed and Excel (Aus) has been a popular

sire among local owners, having accounted for dual G1 Longines

Hong Kong Sprint hero Mr Stunning (Aus) and G1 Al Quoz S.

hero Amber Sky (Aus), and the stallion=s lot 9 hammered for a

second-highest bid of HK$4 million Saturday. A 130,000gns

acquisition at Tatts October, the bay hails from the female

family of G1SW=s Aussie Rules, Allegretto, Albanova, Alborada

and Yesterday (Ire).

The 11 lots grossed HK$31.7 million for an average of HK$2.88

million and a median price of HK$2.5 million.

AWe expected prices would be a little bit down today because

of the economy and the global pandemic,@ said Bill Nader,

Executive Director, Racing, for the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

AThere were no great surprises and we=re happy with the

results. The most important point is that our interests are

aligned to the owners. Our job is to select horses and prepare

horses that can come in and produce a positive outcome for

Hong Kong racing, so the true success of the sale will be known

in the future. We=ve made a few changes to help fine tune the

process and we are always aiming to get better year on year.@

The second HKIS of the year is set for July, during which horses

that were sourced in Australia and New Zealand, but could not

travel to Hong Kong due to coronavirus-related restrictions, will

be offered. Three of the five lots withdrawn from Saturday=s sale

are also expected to be offered.
