INPE - BRAZIL
Background and Objetives
Encourage the use of OSS across EO value chain
Inventory of OS solutions within GEO
Post the inventory into the Web Portal
Encourage development of OSS solutions by building on existing efforts
TerraLib and TerraView as starting GIS platforms (integrated Earth Observation and GIS data)
Milestones achieved to date
1. Building on existing inventories to identify OSS solutions for use in GEO. Pilot implementations in OSS for selected Tasks, and capacity building activities: On going activity
2. Develop the capabilities of end-users of geographical information with no programming skills by providing access and support to a full OSS GIS application package such as TerraView (http://www.dpi.inpe.br/terraview): done.
Expected Milestones for 2008 July 30: Launching of the TerraView and TerraLib version 3.2.1
Basically fixes bugs found on 3.2.0 version
Develop TerraView and TerraLib training material, courses, tutorials and documentation for both programmers and end-users available (in English) and develop specialized training material for e-learning.
TerraView Site in English
TerraLib team has been working on a plain new version of the library (version 4.0) Interoperability (fully OGC - Open Geospatial Consortium -
compliant) and efficiency
Expected Milestones for 2008 Proposal of a Pre-project training potential users
of CBERS users in the “Portuguese” Africa: Angola Mozambique Cape Verde Equatorial Guinea Sao Tome and Principe
Using remote sensing images and Geoprocessing using SPRING
Semipresential courses
Expected Milestones for 2008 JUNE, 2008: launching of a totally new version of SPRING
5.0 We hope to celebrate it together with the mark of 100,000
downloads around the world
What is NEW?
Different database organization: increased speed and efficiency
Main interface was remodeled. Most windows and buttons were reformulated.
It supports images with any radiometric resolution size (previous versions were limited to 8 bits), allowing images from Ikonos or Quickbird
It contains an assistant for importing images from CBERS satellite
Much more…
Extent of participationRecommendations for additional participants
Who could contribute to this task? ITC IRD Very many others...
In process of signing a MOU with IRD… Translation to French
Interfaces of TerraLib, TerraView and SPRING All tutorials and manuals of TerraLib, TerraView and SPRING
Current StatusCBERS-2B reception stations in Africa
Maspalomas – operated by INTA (Spain) Still with technical problem, should be operational by the end of
the year. Malindi (Kenya) and Matera – Both operated by
ASI (Italy) Under negotiation
Hartebeeshoek – operated by CSIR (South Africa) Probably experimental by the end of the year
Aswan – Egypt (NARSS) It was not on the initial plan: some tests last month, probably
experimental antenna
Expected Products
Image Distribution will be carried out by means of the GEONetCast system, created by the GEO, as well as through other channels on the internet (Image catalog and FTP)
Final remarks
Combining open source software with the technical workforce available in developing countries can enable technology transfer.
TerraLib, TerraView and SPRING have INPE’s support for a long term maintenance policy
