Wine producers with this icon displayed are participants in the Tasmanian Mixed Dozen freight scheme. This allows you to purchase a

bottle or two from different vineyards as you travel around and have wine dispatched to your home address once you’ve reached a dozen bottles. Present your purchased wines (in dozen lots) at the last participating vineyard on your travels from which you purchase wine - they’ll let you know the cost of freight and it will be sent straight to you.

Introduction

Welcome to the 2015 edition of Tasmania’s wine routes, your ultimate guide to navigating the island’s beautiful wine growing areas. In addition to providing details of cellar doors and vineyards, this guide also provides details of complementary food and tourism experiences.

Did you know that Tasmania has 160 licensed wine producers? Of these wine producers, the vast majority – more than 100 – only sell their wines within Tasmania. If you like your wines cool climate, elegant, intense and structured, visiting the island is the best way to taste some of Australia’s best!

The Tasmanian cellar door experience is as diverse as the range of wine styles, from converted heritage stables to ultra-modern cellar door restaurants.

Not only will you have the chance to ‘wine’ your way around the island, you will be amazed at the fresh local food on offer from individual producers and at farmers markets, the natural scenery, the arts, culture, heritage and, most of all, the interesting, passionate characters that call Tasmania home.

Tasmania’s boutique yet burgeoning wine sector boasts seven distinct wine growing areas, which are divided into four wine experiences to assist visitors to the island state – the north, the south, the east coast and the north west. All are within easy reach of major centres or are located en route to some of Tasmania’s iconic attractions.

Take your time to explore the varied wines of the Tamar Valley and Pipers River in northern

Tasmania or take an easy drive from Hobart to the Derwent, Coal River and Huon Valleys. There are also award-winning vineyards waiting en route to Cradle Mountain in the north west or en route to Freycinet and Wineglass Bay on the sunny east coast.

Producers are usually on hand and happy to share their passion for their wines, distinctly shaped by Tasmania’s climate and soils.

Wine Tasmania encourages responsible consumption of alcohol and recommends the following: don’t drink on an empty stomach, drink plenty of water, use spittoons and if you plan to drive – choose a designated driver or, even better, take a guided wine route tour.

Varietal Wine Trails – create your own

In 2015, Wine Tasmania is very pleased to launch varietal wine trails, allowing you to create your own itinerary focusing on your favourite wine. For example, you can select Tasmanian producers of sparkling wine and create your own Sparkling Wine Trail or Pinot Noir, or any of the island’s outstanding wine varieties. All you have to do is visit www.winetasmania.com.au/wine_routes and select your favourite variety / varieties from the drop down menu.

Tasmania’s naturally elegant wines are made from grapes grown in climates similar to much-celebrated European wine regions – with mild summers and long autumn days that slowly ripen the grapes, providing elegance and intensity of flavour. Tasmania is renowned for its Pinot Noir, sparkling wines, Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Gris and more.

Tasmania enjoys a national and international reputation as a leading producer of some of Australia’s premium wines, winning high praise and plenty of trophies from wine judges and critics alike.

So enjoy our regional wines, friendly encounters with growers and winemakers and celebrate the delights that come with the changing of our seasons with a visit to one or more of Tasmania’s wine areas.

You will find oodles of information to help you plan your visit to our little island of gourmet paradise at www.discovertasmania.com. You may also like to explore complementary food and beverage trails during your visit, such as the Seafood Trail (www.tsic.org.au), Cider Trail (www.tascidertrail.com) and Whisky Trail (www.taswhiskytrail.com).

Things to see and do:

Tasmania’s Wine Routes 2015 7

MONA is the Museum of Old and New Art, displayed in a secular temple at Moorilla Estate: 6,000 square metres of artwork that will batter your beliefs.

Each Saturday hosts Australia’s best outdoor market in Salamanca Place – bargains and buskers, art and craft, food and wine, trash and treasure.

Visit the pinnacle of spectacular Mt Wellington and see the entire city and its harbour below.

Enjoy some of the freshest fish and chips on Hobart’s waterfront, including Mures Upper Deck – winner of the 2014 Tasmanian Wine List of the Year People’s Choice.

Immerse yourself in the power of Port Arthur, its convict buildings, gardens, tours and captivating tales – an essential Tasmanian experience.

Enjoy a wine tour with one of the many specialist operators - your tailored experience with a knowledgeable local.

Discover Hobart and beyondHobart, Tasmania’s capital city, is located on the Derwent River in Tasmania’s south. Vineyards are closer to Hobart than any other capital city, including the Derwent Valley, Coal River Valley and the Huon / Channel wine growing areas.

South of Hobart are the clear waters and stunning coastline of Bruny Island, the fertile soils of the Huon Valley where vineyards and orchards nestle side-by-side and the picturesque beauty of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel.

East of Hobart are the wineries and vineyards of the Coal River Valley and the Tasman National Park with its spectacular coastline and historic convict sites.

To the west is the Derwent Valley, where the road follows the beautiful Derwent River through rows of poplars and on to Tasmania’s central highlands and the grandeur of Lake St Clair and the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

North from Hobart, the Midland Highway heads to Launceston. Dubbed the Heritage Highway, it offers many opportunities to enjoy Tasmania’s heritage past, with homesteads and country cottages reflecting the state’s early colonial history.

This stunning region offers arts and culture, food and drink, wilderness, heritage, with wildlife and waterways ever present, yet it is the experiences from one moment to the next that will ensure you never forget Tasmania’s south.

Come and treat yourself to the superb wines and food in the Coal River Valley Wine Region. Only a 20 minute scenic drive from the city, the region has the largest concentration of vineyards in southern Tasmania.

Step back in time with a visit to Richmond, an historic village nestled in the rolling hills of the valley. In Richmond, Tasmania’s convict past seems very close. Quaint Georgian cottages line the streets, and mellow sandstone glows in the sun. An amazing number of beautiful old stone buildings constructed by convict labour have stood the test of time.

Exploring Richmond and the Coal River Valley is a delight. Savour the locally produced fine wines and cheeses, visit the art galleries and antique shops, and be tempted by the bakery and lolly shops. Try the succulent fresh local oysters from the Pittwater estuary.

There’s lots of colonial accommodation in the Richmond area, along with an historic country pub, restaurants, and cafes. Why not combine your visit with a local festival, a game of golf at the championship standard golf courses, or an international cricket match or AFL game at Blundstone Arena?

East Coast Wine Route

Things to see and do:

A place filled with reasons to just stopTasmania’s east coast is many different things. Yes, it’s picture-perfect, white sand beaches and open, endless blue horizons. It’s places that make you feel like you’re the first person to leave a footprint. It’s national parks filled with wonders, and seaside towns filled with welcome. It’s a gourmet food bowl bursting with the best local fare matched to full-flavoured wines, harvested from the east coast wine route’s boutique vineyards.

But it’s much more than that.

This is a place of stories, of encounters and treasures. A place where small, unexpected moments become lifelong memories and where taking a break can not only refresh, but reinvent. This is a place where everyday pressures are forgotten, a place that gives you time and space, where there is always something new to discover; every time in every season.

The east coast is 220 beautiful kilometres full of reasons to just stop. To take a moment. To begin to see life a little differently. Once you visit, you’ll understand. And once you understand, we promise, you’ll want to come back. Again. And again.

www.eastcoasttourism.com.au

From Orford, take a cruise to Maria Island; observe wombats and wallabies as they graze the Darlington settlement. Don’t miss the Painted Cliffs and Fossil Cliffs.

“The cool temperatures mean Tasmania’s wines are closest in style to those of regions such as Champagne and Burgundy in France, and so they are naturally elegant. Pinot noir, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc all thrive here: sparkling wines are outstanding and cabernet sauvignon can be stellar in warmer years.“

Experience the unexpectedFull of colour and flavour, Tasmania’s North West is the gateway to some of Tasmania’s most beautiful natural places. Exploring the North West you’ll find the unexpected – classic coastal drives, food and wine trails, stunning national parks and beautiful nature reserves.

Tasmania’s North West is a great place for touring and offers spectacular views at every turn, from Mt Roland near Devonport, Table Cape near Wynyard and the famous ‘Nut’ at Stanley. And some of Tasmania’s prettiest cities and towns sit right on the water’s edge on the scenic North West coast, each with their own unique attractions and relaxed seaside atmosphere.

There’s an ongoing tradition of agriculture here that’s evident in the rich red soils and patchwork fields found throughout the countryside. The ideal growing conditions have inspired growers and makers committed to producing the very best in fresh crisp vegetables, dairy products, outstanding wines, whisky and sweet treats for the hungry traveller – the ultimate paddock to plate experience.

There’s a wealth of stories here too, with some great museums and significant Aboriginal heritage sites, while the region’s creative spirit is showcased in the many art galleries, public artworks, artisan shops and markets found along the North West coast.

Tasmania’s North West is also home to Cradle Mountain, one of Tasmania’s most visited icons, offering amazing nature experiences, including forest adventures, great walks – easy and hard – and some of the best scenery in the world.

Whichever way you explore the region, there’s no shortage of great places to stay, eat and enjoy in Tasmania’s North West.
