CANDIDATE INSTRUCTIONS You MUST ensure that you have addressed ALL of the externally assessed criteria on this examination paper. You must answer SEVEN questions in total: ALL FOUR questions from Section A ONE question from each of Sections B, C and D You should spend approximately 60 minutes on Section A and approximately 40 minutes on each of the other three questions. You are required to use correct linework and presentation, and are encouraged to include freehand sketches, where necessary, to show the development of ideas in the solution of problems. Construction must be shown. All dimensions are in millimetres unless otherwise stated. All written responses must be in English.

SECTION A
Answer ALL questions in this section. Question 1 – This question assesses Criterion 2. Figure 1 shows an inclined regular hexagonal prism. Graphically determine the true length of the line A-B.

Section A (continued) Question 2 – This question assesses Criterion 3. Figure 2 shows the plan and two elevations of a much simplified garage drawn in first angle orthographic projection. Freehand sketch the same views in third angle orthographic projection.

Section A (continued) Question 3 – This question assesses Criteria 2 and 3. Figure 3 shows an old plan of a block of land shown in Imperial measurements (i.e. feet and inches). For the most part the dimensions are unreadable, apart from the N – S boundary which is 154 feet long. One foot equals 305mm. Redraw the block plan and graphically enlarge it so that it is at a scale of 1:500.

Section A (continued) Question 4 – This question assesses Criteria 2 and 3. Figure 4 shows a communications aerial that comprises two vertical antennae connected by a horizontal aerial wire. The tensions in all but one of the support stays and aerial are shown. Determine the tensions necessary in the aerial and stay X-Y in order to stabilise the structure.

SECTION B
Answer ONE question from this section. This section assesses Criteria 2 and 3 weighted 1:4 respectively. Question 5 A spotlight inclined at 60o to a stage floor projects a 15o cone of light onto the floor. If the light source is 10 metres above the floor, draw the shape of the light spot on the floor. Question 6 Figure 5 shows a side view of a cone. Draw an ellipse and the parabola where the cutting planes for each pass through the same point P on the axis.

Section B (continued) Question 7 A mediaeval gravity, assisted catapult called a trebuchet, and its simplified motion are shown Figures 6 (a) and (b). A winch hauls the weight W into the air. When the winch is released the large weight W drops and rotates the arm. The missile M that is connected by rope to the arm is swung clockwise and released at C as shown in Figure 6 (b). The missile is dragged from A to B, then follows an Archimedean spiral path to C where it is released.

SECTION C
Answer ONE question from this section. This section assesses Criteria 2 and 3 weighted 4:1 respectively. Question 8 Figure 7 shows the parabolic nose (a paraboloid – a parabola rotated around its axis) of an air monitoring aircraft. It is fitted with an on-centre tube through which the air is collected whilst the aircraft is in flight. Either: Draw the line of intersection of the tube and the nose. Or: Develop the surface of the tube.

Section C (continued) Question 9 Rifling in the barrel of a gun is a series of grooves which run in a helical pattern for the full length of the barrel. This imparts a spin to the ballistic projectile (the bullet) which allows it to maintain a straight trajectory or path. Figure 8 shows a gun barrel. Draw the path of one rifling groove, starting at A, when the pitch of the groove is 240mm, for the full length of the barrel.

Question 10 Generally, ocean tides around Tasmania display harmonic cyclic motion, with two high tides interspersed with two low tides every 24 hours. Graphically represent these tidal ranges for 24 hours when the predicted high tides are 1.6 metres above Datum and the low tides are 0.7 metres below Datum. Datum is the theoretical sea level when there is no tidal variation.

Answer ONE question from this section. This section assesses Criteria 2 and 3 weighted equally. Question 11 A butterfly roof is shown in Figure 9. Draw an auxiliary view of the point of intersection of the two planar roof panels and determine the angle that the gutter has to be bent to join the two panels.
