DC Report

May 2013Return to homepage

It doesn’t seem long since my last newsletter report but that’s not to say there hasn’t been some excite-ment!

Zone GamesSaturday 11th May saw zone games being held at West Tamar Pony Club ground at Gravelly Beach. TPRC entered two teams a junior and a senior team with both performing very well. Our senior team won the presentation trophy and were third in the games competition and our juniors were second in the presentation section and WON the junior games competition!!! Our juniors will now go on to compete at State Games to be held on Sunday 26th May at the Pontville recreation ground.

Congratulations to the riders who competed in the teams: Seniors: Melissa Chugg, Jacki Harvey, Bailey Elias, Emily Hirst and Emma Cowling and our Juniors: Laura Chalmers, Maddy Pearn, Chelsea Baker, Geor-gia Elias and Chloe McFarlane. Bethany Hirst was our reserve rider and went along on the day and rode in a scramble team.

From all accounts it was a very exciting day with some close contests.

AGMI know it seems a while away, but now is the time to start thinking about whether you would be interest-ed in nominating for a position for the Committee in the new financial year.

Part of the reason our club is so successful, is that we have a form of succession planning in place which means that for the most part, people aren’t thrown into positions they know nothing about, at the AGM.

Next newsletter, we will put something together about each position so that if you think you could be interested, you will know what each position entails.

Please talk to a Committee member if you would like to know more. It is important to remember the Club can’t run without an active and committed group of people at the helm.

Games Report

Games were held on the 11th of May at Gravelly Beach. For the first time in a little while we were greeted by sunshine upon arrival as opposed to the usual fog! This year TPRC had 2 teams a Junior team consisting of Laura Chalmers, Chelsea Baker, Georgie Elias, Chloe McFarlane and Maddy Pearn with Bethany Hirst as reserve. And a Senior team of Jackie Harvey, Melissa Chugg, Bailey Elias, Emily Hirst and Emma Cowling. Every one of our team members showed great team spirit and sportsmanship throughout the day. Most of the games were very close.

Overall our Senior team won senior presentation and came third in the games competition for seniors and our Juniors came second in junior presentation and won the games competition for juniors. Our junior team will be heading off to the State Games Championships in Hobart on May 26th. A very big well done to all of our team members and a huge thank you to our coaches Nic Archer & Jo McFarlane.

Handy Hints

Poor Teeth as a Cause of ‘Unwillingness’Sharp-edged molars, which can lacerate the inside of the mouth and tongue, are a common cause of tossing the head, lugging to one side, resistance to rein pressure and evasive behaviour under saddle. A change in bit, such as a rubber bit and a check for lacerations of the internal cheek membranes, may help improve the horse’s willingness to work and be controlled.

The horse’s teeth should be checked by a horse dentist and ‘floated’ to remove the sharp edges as necessary. It may take a week or so after the teeth have been rasped for the discomfort of the sharp-edged molars to subside and the horse to lose the ‘fear of the bit’. A horse will often anticipate the likelihood of discomfort from a previous association, or take evasive action to a situation which had previously caused it fear or pain. Some horses react to certain riders following a past experience and it may take repeated training sessions to put it at ease.

Remember, if you can’t do canteen it is up to you to find a replacement.

ReminderJust a little reminder to members regarding the end of the pony club day. Each rally a committee member is nominated to stay

behind and close all the gates. Sometimes families are a little slow to get going, which means the person who is shutting the gate

has to wait. If you look like being the last few, please be mindful of this person and don’t be

too much longer.

Uniform

Don’t forget our uniform requirements. All riders must in the first instance, purchase

the full pony club uniform ie gold jumper, white shirt and gold tie. Even our youngest riders need to have this uniform as they need it

when they sit their D test at age 7 and for club presentation at camp.

The rugby jumper and active riding top are optional extras only.

Wet Weather PolicyRallies will NOT be cancelled in the morning

unless there is an electrical storm.Parents should not ring to find out if the

rally will go ahead, but if you decide you are not going to attend due to the wet weather,

please let Kylee know ASAP. The rally may be cancelled during the day if necessary.

In the case of an electrical storm, the DC and CC will confer. If the rally is cancelled

everyone will be notified by text by 9am which means the rally start time may need to be

delayed.

REMINDER

A reminder that there is to be NO smoking or dogs on the Pony Club grounds at ALL times. We want to be setting a good example for our riders, so if you must light up, please leave the grounds.

Also pick up any rubbish and either place it in a bin or take it with you.
