FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESKPaul talks about providing a safe online environment for our studentsAs we know there is a tendency to write things when contributing to social media that you may not say in person – this is one of the negatives with having a conversation with someone solely on email. Taken a step further, we know the online world can be a fertile space for unpleasantness and sometimes bullying. With the recent focus by Federal and State governments and the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence, schools have redoubled their efforts on combatting bullying in schools, with particular focus on online behaviour. Social media usage is now part of daily life and whilst it is tempting to want to “ban the internet” to make our children safer, unfortunately that approach is not an option. Consequently most experts see education as the key, teaching children how to use it appropriately and learning how to effectively call out those who don’t.Western Sydney University recently published a study on teen’s social media usage. Their findings are interesting as a starting point regarding cyberbullying:• Facebook is less popular than it was for teen users• Instagram is very popular with teens, who may access it between 1 and 30 times a day• Increasingly teens have a real account (a “rinsta”) and a second or fake account (a “finsta”)• The “finsta” account is used to relieve the pressure of maintaining a picture-perfect online profile – it usually shows a more authentic personality to a small group of trusted friends or to pursue interests that may provoke ridicule from their wider online network• Use is continually shifting in new ways in response to changing platforms, age and social context.

Another interesting article can be found at ‘Online Safety on the Edge’, held November 1 – 3 2017, Sydney, conference jointly co-hosted by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner, Australia, and Netsafe, New Zealand here – the conference report can be accessed as a pdf.Whilst “sexting” and access to pornography are key concerns, a recent tragic case in outback Australia brought cyberbulling into the national conversation. We sometimes feel a little helpless, as many of our children have an almost separate life online that we are not privy to. From a practical standpoint, as a parent, how can you help your child combat potential bullying situations online? Here are 8 tips for helping prevent cyberbullying of your child (from the website nobullying.com).* Tip #1 – Demonstrate Proper Behaviour

When Using Technology – First, make sure you are a good example. When you’re using technology, avoid joking about or harassing other individuals. Your children will learn a lot from your behaviour when you use technology.

* Tip #2 – Talk to Your Children About Bullying and Cyberbullying – Take the time to talk to your kids about bullying and cyberbullying. Let them know that they need to respect other people and explain that bullying can be hurtful. Make sure they know that bullying, whether offline or online, is never okay.

* Tip #3 – Teach Kids the Consequences of Misusing Technology – Share some of the dangers of cyberbullying with your children and make sure they know the consequences of misusing technology. For example, misusing technology could get them in trouble with police or could damage their reputation.

* Tip #4 – Get Involved in Your Child’s Use of Technology – Be involved with your child’s use of technology. Let kids show you how they

Paul Sjogren Principal

use their smartphone or the web. Ask if they have experienced any harassment online.

* Tip #5 – Limit Cellphone Use and Internet Use – Cellphone and internet use should both be privileges. Limit it to a certain amount of time each day. Keep kids off phones and the internet at night, which is when most instances of cyberbullying occur.

* Tip #6 – Keep Computers in Visible Areas – Don’t allow kids or teens to have computers in their bedroom. Ensure the computer is in a visible area of your home.

* Tip #7 – Let Kids Know They Should Talk to You If Cyberbullying Occurs – Ensure your kids know that they can talk to you if cyberbullying ever occurs. Ask your kids about cyberbullying from time to time.

* Tip #8 – Use a Good Blocking and Filtering Software – Using a good blocking and filtering software can help you set online time limits, block hateful, offensive content and allows you to monitor the online behaviour of your kids. It’s one more way that you can work to protect your child from cyberbullying.

At TAS, we apply a number of strategies to defend against cyberbullying.(i) At TAS smart phones are not allowed to be used during the school day without specific permission. Smartphones usually access the internet through personal data plans which we cannot monitor.

(ii) We use Cyberhound as our main filter on the school network (and thus school machines) and are able to intervene pastorally when we pick up inappropriate content by our students when used on our network. Of course, this does not apply when the device is used outside our network (and some students will try to gain internet access outside the school network). (iii) Later in Term 2 we will be hosting well-known cybersafety expert Brett Lee who will run workshops with our secondary students, staff and parents. (iv) As members of the Anglican Schools Commission, staff at TAS are kept up-to-date with recent information and parents have access to the CyberBytes newsletters. The recent February 4 issue is available on our website and is well worth reading.(v) Mr Terry Reid is a member of the Anglican network of “cyber safety champions” and travels to Brisbane to meet with other Anglican school staff to share ideas and strategies. He has direct access to Mr Steven Windows, the Anglican Schools cyber-safety expert. We will continue to work to provide a “safe as possible” online environment for our students and thus allow staff and students to make use of the incredible range of learning platforms available. Thank you to the large number of parents who work with us collaboratively to ensure this happens.

International SportsBilleting Opportunities

Later this year we have a real treat for our students in terms of International School Sport. We have three visiting international school teams coming to play our teams, all in the same two day period. For both the Rugby School from England and Blue Mountain College from New Zealand, it’s the fourth time they have visited our school and we have a special relationship with both of these schools. We also have a visit from Merchant Taylor’s Girls School from England. All of the games will be after school, with a boys rugby, girls netball and mixed volleyball game on Wednesday 18 July and then a hockey round robin mini-tournament and another netball game on Thursday 19 July.

We will also need to billet 30 girls from the Rugby School on both 18 and 19 July, so we are looking for families to volunteer. Our teams for these matches will be arranged later next term, but will most probably be our more senior / experienced players in all of the sports. If your family can look after a couple of these girls from Rugby School can you please email [email protected].

Reduce | Reuse | RecycleCairns Regional Council PresentationMr Scott Patterson from the Cairns Regional Council visited White Rock Junior to teach the Year 5 students about reducing, reusing and recycling. We learnt that reducing was the most important thing that we can do for a sustainable future. This is because all the rubbish we throw away that isn’t recyclable goes straight to landfill. This is approximately 64 million tons of rubbish a year, so imagine how big the hole must be!Reusing is also an important step to help maintain our environment. To reuse waste, you could make craft with it and lots of other creative things. For example, you could get a plastic bottle, cut it in half and after a few more simple steps, a plant could grow in it!Now for recycling. Some people just throw recyclable items into the waste bin. This is extremely sad because these recyclable items end up in landfill too. Just think how much less rubbish there would be if people put things in the right bin.We ended the day with a recycling relay race. Both classes had a great time and would like to send a big thank you to the Cairns Regional Council for carrying out this presentation.

Focus on EnvironmentClean Up and Lights Out

A big thank you to the Student Representative Council who organised the Schools’ Clean Up Australia Day for students at Kewarra Beach Junior recently. Students did a wonderful job removing all litter and rubbish from our beautiful grounds and gardens. Thanks to our teachers who prepared their respective classes for the activity and arranged for them to collect rubbish from their area.

Once again, our students and teachers participated in the ‘Lights Out’ event for Earth Hour Schools’ Day on Friday, 23 March. All non-essential lighting was switched off for the whole day and students learned how this one small action could have such a big impact on the conservation of energy and the earth’s resources.

The Youth of the Year District Final was of exceptional high standard in both the public speaking and the interview stage. It was decided by a very narrow point between these fine and young students and future leaders. Kate took out the community award for her outstanding volunteer duties as well as excelling academically in her school studies.TAS also congratulates Anna Chapman who took out the best public speaking award, and David Bin took out the overall award.

Outdoor Education FoodHave you ever wondered what our students eat on camp?

TAS Outdoor Education employs the services of Juli and Barry Neale for all junior school outdoor education program catering. Juli makes the majority of her food from scratch, using a significant amount of local, organic ingredients. Students love her food, with highlights being home-made muesli bars, home-made dips with vegetables and corn chips, frozen fruit of various descriptions, lasagne, chocolate pudding and pancakes. Our students are instructed to eat at least three fruits/vegetables with every meal. There is always plenty of food available, with almost every student having seconds at each meal. Juli’s signature dessert, chocolate pudding, is special in that it has no refined sugar, using red kidney beans as a starch and dates as the sweetener. Students gobble this down and are later told how healthy it is! Home-made dips as snack food can also be used as an educational opportunity, teaching children about the large amount of waste packaging on our normal snack foods. A discussion about the concepts of reduce, re-use and recycle often happens with groups using this as a primer. With older students topics such as food colours and flavours are also be discussed, as the dips are made with all-natural ingredients.

TAS SwimmingLong Course Swimming ChampionshipsCongratulations to TAS Swimming, who have claimed the Long Course Regional Championships for the 2017-2018 season, backing up the win from last year. What a display of dominance with an incredible eight Age-Champions and one runner-up. Well done to TAS students• James Harpley,• Thomas Chen,• Ella Goddard,• Flynn Martin,• Harriet Grant, and • Age Champion Runner-up Lauren Morris.
