We have fourteen
wineries producing fine
cool climate wines, with
a focus on quality, not
quantity. With a similar
climate and terrain
to that of northern
Italy, it is little wonder
that much of what is
produced here has a
distinct Italian influence.

T he Great Alpine Valleys are located in North East
Victoria and situated along two key watercourses,
the Kiewa and Ovens River. Fed by our spring snow
melt, the rivers are the lifeblood of the valleys. Our mountains
and valleys offer year round activities providing a lifetime of
experiences to our visitors.
Key townships in our region are Myrtleford, Mount Beauty and
Bright in the valleys and Dinner Plain - our Alpine retreat. The
island in the sky, Mount Buffalo, is an ideal hideaway for walks
and tours unraveling the High Country’s natural treasures.
The development of the Yarra Valley to the High Country
‘Culinary Adventure Trail’ between the Yarra Valley and North
Eastern Victoria provides an alternative route for food and wine
lovers making their way from Melbourne to the Great Alpine
Valleys.

The region is also cycle friendly, featuring the Murray to
Mountains Rail Trail, numerous mountain bike trails and parks
and road cycling circuits suitable for families right through to
serious enthusiasts. Pedal to Produce offers visitors another
way to discover the region on two wheels; collect a map and a
basket to attach to your bike and start exploring!
With the addition of the Alpine Explorer to our repertoire -
enabling visitors to create their own itinerary facilitated by touch
screen - creating an Alpine experience has never been easier.

T The rich soil is ideal for cultivating cool climate wines,
nuts, olives and a variety of fruits and vegetables.
The area is also suited to grazing with alpacas and deer
popular along with cattle, sheep and goats.
Community festivals to celebrate the different seasons and
harvests; including the Bright Autumn and Spring Festivals,
the Wandi Nut Festival the Myrtleford Festival and La Fiera in
Myrtleford are a great way to discover local produce and meet
the locals.
The region is known for its diversity - the seasons, the
landscape, the people, and of course, the produce.
Unraveling all the elements that make up the Great Alpine
Valleys is just the beginning.

what produce is available right now?To get an idea of what produce is available in season in the Great Alpine Valleys, look at the Seasonal Produce Guide over page.
Sourcing produce locally is the smarter choice; it’s good for your wallet, great for your health and reduces your carbon footprint. The less distance produce has to travel from the farm to your plate means a fresher, tastier, more nutritious product for you at a fraction of the price.

E ver wondered how your food makes it from the
farmyard to your plate? Take the opportunity to find out
and discover the true meaning of ‘fresh’.
Make the time to visit the growers and purchase your produce
direct from the farm. Don’t just rush in and rush out, have a
chat and learn some more about the produce. At Australian
Gourmet Chestnuts in Eurobin, you can find out the best
method to roast your chestnuts and the Jamandah Boer Goat
Stud in Nug Nug can give you some ideas for accompaniments
for your goat meat sausages.
Some growers, such as Valley Nut Groves in Gapsted, offer
tours of the production facilities (by appointment only) and
many wineries offer vineyard tours for those who want to know
a little more.

I t can take years to create a good bottle of wine; preparing
the soil, planting the vines, tending to them season after
season until it’s finally time to harvest the grapes, then
comes the tricky part – turning grapes into wine. Luckily, the
Great Alpine Valleys’ winemakers have some they’ve prepared
earlier!
There are more than a dozen wineries to choose from as well as
a few breweries for those who prefer the amber ale. Boynton’s
Feathertop Winery in Porepunkah offers both wine and their
own boutique beers on tap. For a real hands-on experience, the
Bright Brewery in the centre of town offers ‘Brewer for a Day’
packages.
T he Great Alpine Valleys is about more than just wine
and beer. The Butter Factory in Myrtleford is one of
only a small handful of producers in Australia making
cultured butter. Visitors can watch the process from the viewing
platform before tasting the final product in the café.
For those with a serious sweet tooth, sample the many
flavours at Le Blanche Ice Creamery in Bright or indulge in the
deliciously rich fudge from the Alpine Fudge Factory in Mount
Beauty.
There’s also jams, olive oils, sauces, baked goods – the list
goes on and on!

Degustation is a French term referring to the art oftasting food. Menus are generally eight or more small courses, ‘tastings’, served one after the other providing an opportunity to sample many different dishes in one sitting.

Nothing beats a local market in Great Alpine Valleys. There are more than a dozen different markets, many held annually and others at regular intervals throughout the year.
greatalpinevalleys.com.au | Taste Alpine | 22
T he monthly Bright Markets in Howitt Park follow the
philosophy of ‘Make It, Bake It, Grow It’ and offer
more than just a market. Along with the fresh produce,
delicious food stalls, crafts, wine tasting, art and artisan
products, the markets also offer kid’s activities and live music
to keep you entertained while you browse. Regular stallholders
are shown in the directory, just look for the Bright Markets
symbol.
The Myrtleford Produce Market in Clyde Street is held weekly
during summer and autumn and is the next best thing to
visiting the farmgate. The produce is entirely seasonal and the
sellers are always happy to offer some advice or tips on how to
prepare your purchases. If shopping outdoors is not your cup
of tea, try the many retail options in the Great Alpine Valleys.
Delizie Café & Delicatessen in Myrtleford is a one-stop-shop
for all your antipasti needs and Food Wine Friends in Bright is a
great place to have a coffee and stock up on regional produce.
