Winemakers build top Tassie brand

WHEN was the last time you visited one of your local cellar doors or vineyards?

If it was in the past 12 months you’re not alone - there wereabout another 209,000 people who did the same.

More than 18% of all visitors to Tasmania in 2015 called in to acellar door during their stay, an increase of 20% on the previous year.

Along with the island’s many world-class tourism offerings,Tasmania’s wine sector continues to win global attention and at-tract visitation as a result.

Just last week, Conde Nast Traveller in the US listed Tasmaniaas the number one global region for “the best wines in the world right now”, reporting that “the island is gaining attention for its sparkling wine, chardonnay, riesling and … pinot noir”.

Last month, the Australian Financial Review listed Tasmanian“Pinot Supremacy” as the top wine trend for 2016. Our wines are regularly awarded in national and international wine compe-titions.

What does this mean for Tasmania? More visitors coming toexperience our wines and complementary food, tourism, artistic and natural experiences, more people moving to Tasmania specifically to grow grapes and make wine here, more people wanting to buy our wines and more opportunity for our wine businesses to grow and contribute to their regional communities.

It often comes as a surprise just how little Tasmania is in thenational context - we produce less than 1% of Australia’s total wine production - many mainland producers spill more wine dur-ing vintage than Tasmania produces.

But we are “big” where it counts - we represent more than 10% of the premium Australian wine segment and the value of our overall bottle price and our exports is more than double the national average.

This is because we are in the right part of the world to craftexceptional quality wines full of flavour and intensity.

This weekend is an outstanding opportunity to visit some ofour many talented wine producers.

Sheralee Davies, pictured, is chief executive of Wine Tas-mania, which was established in 2006 as the peak rep-resentative body for Tasmanian grape growers and winemakers.

Wineries by the numbersTASMANIA’S first experiment with grape-vines resulted in a wine that was shown at a Paris exhibition in 1848.

However, after this early start, the is-land’s wine production all but disappeared until the 1950s.

The early migrants from Europe recog-nised the similarities in Tasmania of the soils and climate with the great grape growing regions of their homelands and began to challenge and disprove the the-ory that Tasmania was too far south for grapes to ripen.

Today, Tasmania enjoys a global repu-tation as a leading producer of premium cool climate wines, winning high praise and accolades from wine judges and critics alike.

TERROIRThe Tasmanian landscape is dominated by dolerite-capped mountains that shelter the state’s wine regions from high winds and rainfall.

On the lower slopes, the vineyard soilsare formed from ancient sandstones and mudstones and also from more recent river sediments and igneous rocks of volcanic origin.

COOL CLIMATE ADVANTAGETasmania has a moderate maritime cli-mate, cooled by prevailing westerly winds off the Southern Ocean, providing condi-tions free of extremes in temperature.

Mild spring and summer temperatures, with warm autumn days and cool nights allow the grapes to ripen slowly on the

vine, resulting in maximum varietal flavour development. This is achieved without los-ing that essential natural acidity that gives wine both freshness and balance.

VINTAGEThe Tasmanian vintage usually begins from mid-March, at the peak of the dry autumn when ripening occurs, to late May before the risk of frost and rain.

Vintage variations are greater in Tas-mania than any other Australian region. This vintage variation is reflected in each unique wine and makes for an insightful tasting of multiple vintages from the same producer.
