However in 1855, the Chicago, Iowa, and Nebraska railroad bought the hamlet and named it Clinton, in honor of DwWitt Clinton, governor of New York state. Clinton, IowaClinton, Iowa, one of the first railroad crossings over the Mississippi River, has been a major gateway to the Great Plains and beyond since 1859. Clinton has two bridges across the Mississippi River, the North Bridge –also known as the Mark Morris Memorial Bridge– connecting Fulton, Illinois and Clinton, Iowa along Highway 136, and the South Bridge –also known as the Gateway Bridge– connecting Iowa and Illinois along U.S. Highway 30.

Permanent collection includes old photographs of the area, memorabilia, period furniture, authentic 1924 kitchen, and the “Resolute,” one of the only three manually-powered fire engines on display in the world.

The gift shop contains unique gifts items created by artists from the Clinton area and from all over the United States. During the year, classes and workshops, taught by local teachers and well-known artists, are held in painting, pottery, ceramics, and drawing. The River Arts Center houses the Best Cellar Theatre, which has year-round children and adult shows using local talent. Hours at the River Arts Center are Wednesday through Sunday, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Closed Mondays, Tuesdays, and the first two weeks of January.

Late in 1983 the Clinton Park Board and the Showboat Advisory Board founded the Showboat Players.In the summer of 1984, the first group of Showboat Players debuted at the Lillian Russell Theatre. From this group, CAST was created. Since 1989 CAST has been running their company from the Showboat and has become an integral part of summer in the community.
