Black History MonthMore than a dozen exhibitions, talks and walks are being held locally during October as part of Black History Month.
“I’d encourage people from all backgrounds to get involved and take time to learn something new about their own or another culture in their community,” says Cllr Columba Blango, Southwark’s executive member for equalities and citizenship. “Black History Month is a great opportunity to do this.”
Several events in the the Mayor of London’s Black History Season are being held locally. Ken Livingstone says: “The events I am supporting are broad and varied in theme, so will both educate, inspire and entertain Londoners.
“The modern legacies of one of the greatest crimes against humanity, the Transatlantic Slave Trade, will be explored during a series of lectures and
contemporary City Hall art exhibitions.” For details of these exhibitions turn to page 6.
Black 100+, a photographic exhibition featuring portraits of 50 contemporary black achievers including comedian Lenny Henry, academic Baroness Young, actor and playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah and Eastenders star Rudolph Walker, will open at London College of Communication on Monday 15 October. The event is on Tuesday 23 October at the LCC. See page 4 for details.

In BriefWaterloo paintingRailway artist Terence Cuneo’s famous 1967 painting of the bustling concourse of Waterloo station at the end of the steam era goes on show at the National Railway Museum in York this month. It is the first time that the gigantic 6 by 9-metre canvas has been on public display since the artist’s death more than a decade ago. A bronze sculpture of the artist was unveiled at Waterloo by the Princess Royal in 2004. The York exhibition continues until 30 April 2008.

BOOK REVIEW
Festival of Britain 1951Paul RennieAntique Collectors’ Club £14.95Buy at www.inSE1.co.uk/books
As the Queen visits the refurbished Royal Festival Hall this month this is a timely look at the history of the South Bank arts complex.
Paul Rennie’s interest in the 1951 Festival of Britain began when his father – as part of his National Service – was involved in the construction of a Bailey bridge across the Thames next to Hungerford Bridge to bring visitors to the South Bank for the Festival.
An ideal Christmas gift for anyone with an an interest in design, this beautiful book features many of the souvenirs and other items produced for the Festival – from scarves to napkins and teapots. The Skylon Biro stand is a particular highlight.
Even those too young to remember the Festival will enjoy the ephemera so elegantly presented in this volume.
BOOK REVIEW
Thames: Sacred RiverPeter AckroydChatto & Windus £25Buy at www.inSE1.co.uk/books
Peter Ackroyd walked from the source of the River Thames in Gloucestershire to London and continued by boat to the wide estuary.
His book has a clever cover featuring London Bridge which is appropriate as his work is a view of the river from a London perspective.
He tells us that high tide at London Bridge is between 15 and 22 feet although the Romans knew only a 3 foot rise. He compares the oldest bridge at Radcot with the newest at Bankside and claims that Southwark had “a reputation for noisomeness and excess” whilst in the 17th-century Thomas Dekker described Borough High Street as “a continued alehouse with not a shop to be seen”.
Mentioned in passing are Chaucer, Shakespeare and Shelley. We are told that William Blake could see the Thames from his house in Hercules Road. The grim River of Death chapter records the Marchioness disaster.
Unfortunately, the thematic chapters result in some repetition.
