Taroona sewerage project Removing the discharge point from Taroona

The Taroona Sewage Treatment Plant, which treats sewage from the Taroona area, is located in Nubeena Crescent at Crayfish Point – directly beside a marine research centre and a foreshore walking track.

For some time the plant has suffered a range of issues, including odour, stormwater infiltration, pump reliability and other problems associated with the ageing infrastructure. At times it does not meet licence conditions required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

TasWater will decommission (close down and remove) the existing treatment plant and replace it with an underground pump station. A new pipeline will take the sewage to Selfs Point Sewage Treatment Plant in Cornelian Bay for treatment.

New pipeline

The first stage of this work involves construction of a new 4.7km rising main from Taroona to Sandy Bay. The route has been chosen for the least impact to the community and the environment and for operational and cost effectiveness.

TasWater has engaged MSD Constructions to undertake this. The installation of this rising main will have some impact on traffic flows on sections of the Channel Highway and Sandy Bay Rd.

As the pipeline progresses, in approximately 50 metre work sections, traffic controls will be in place as required.

New pump station

A new pump station will be built to replace the existing Taroona Sewage Treatment Plant. This will be located underground and will not be visible to walkers on the nearby path.

The tanks on the site of the treatment plant will be removed and the land returned to a grassed state before it is handed over to its new owner.

Benefits

The decommissioning of the Taroona Sewage Treatment Plant represents a $5.2 million investment and provides a long term sewerage solution for the area. The project will:

• provide residents and businesses with a sustainable, long term sewerage system

• replace ageing infrastructure that currently does not meet licence requirements set by the EPA

• remove the discharge point from Taroona, eliminating environmental impacts on the marine reserve at Crayfish point

• reduce odour issues affecting surrounding properties and recreational users of the sports ground and foreshore

• improve the community foreshore walking track and appearance of the foreshore.

Environmental management

TasWater will ensure minimal disturbance to the site and surrounds, including minimising the impact of noise and dust.

Management of traffic issues will also assist smooth vehicle flow.

Areas disturbed during construction will be renewed or rehabilitated.

The community will be kept informed of all construction works via public notices in the media, local signage and updates on our website at www.taswater.com.au
