History: Tata Motors is a part of the Tata Group manages its share-holding

through Tata Sons. Tata Motors was established in 1950 by JRD Tata as a locomotive

manufacturing unit and later expanded its operations to commercial vehicle sector in 1954 after forming a joint venture with Daimler-Benz AG of Germany.

Tata Motors is a part of the Tata Group manages its share-holding through Tata Sons.

Despite the success of its commercial vehicles, Tata realized his company had to diversify and he began to look at other products.

Based on consumer demand, the company decided that building a small car would be the most practical new venture.

In 1998 company launched Tata Indica, India's first fully indigenous passenger car. It was designed to be inexpensive and simple to build and maintain.

Indica became a hit in the Indian market and was also exported to Europe, especially in UK and Italy.

In 2005, Tata Motors acquired a 21% stake in Hispano Carrocera, a reputed Spanish bus and coach manufacturer, and subsequently the remaining stake in 2009.

1. Jaguar Land Rover: Jaguar Land Rover is a business built around two iconic British car

brands that designs, engineers and manufactures in the UK. With investment in product creation topping £1 billion a year, Jaguar Land Rover is at the centre of the UK automotive industry’s drive to deliver technical innovation in all areas of vehicle development.

The Jaguar Land Rover business directly employs more than 18,000 people and supports approximately 130,000 jobs (through direct employment, dealers, suppliers and broader economy).

Jaguar Land Rover exports annually generate almost £6 billion for the UK economy with 78 percent of Land Rovers exported to over 160 countries and 70 percent of Jaguars exported to over 60 countries.

Jaguar Cars Limited, founded in 1922, is one of the world’s premier manufacturers of luxury saloons and sports cars. Since 1948 Land Rover has been manufacturing authentic 4x4s that define 'breadth of capability' in their segments. After years of dominating the commercial vehicle market in India, Tata Motors entered the passenger vehicle market in 1991 by launching the Tata Sierra, a multi utility vehicle.

After the launch of three more vehicles, Tata Estate (1992, a station wagon design based on the earlier ‘TataMobile’ (1989), a light commercial vehicle), Tata Sumo (LCV, 1994) and Tata Safari (1998, India’s first sports utility vehicle).

Tata launched the Indica in 1998, the first fully indigenous passenger car of India. Though the car was initially planned by auto-analysts, the car’s excellent fuel economy, powerful engine and aggressive marketing strategy made it one of the best selling cars in the history of the Indian automobile industry.

A newer version of the car, named Indica V2, was a major improvement over the previous version and quickly became a mass-favorite. Tata Motors also successfully exported large quantities of the car to South Africa. The success of Indica in many ways marked the rise of Tata Motors.

Tata Motors is also expanding its international footprint, established through exports since 1961. The Company's commercial and passenger vehicles are already being marketed in several countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South East Asia, South Asia and South America. It has franchisee/joint venture assembly operations in Kenya, Bangladesh, Ukraine, Russia, Senegal and South Africa.

To expand the product portfolio Tata Motors recently introduced the 25MT GVW Tata Novus from Daewoo’s (South Korea) (TDCV) platform.

Passenger Vehicles Tata Motors has launched several cars in India and also worldwide:

1. Tata Manza: The remarkable refinement of the Indigo Manza systems from the internationally acclaimed SAFIRE90 petrol and QUADRAJET90 diesel engines. These engines give a perfect balance of power and economy, on both open and city roads. Feel the smoothness as you cruise along on its extra large 15 inch wheels with tubeless radials which are designed to smoothen out every bump on the road. 2. Tata Indica Vista:

The Indica vista is a change that dramatically alters the landscape of cars on the road. It is a completely new design from bumper to bumper providing a modern look, in keeping with the times. The superlative package is powered by the internationally acclaimed, advanced QUADRAJET and the world class petrol SAFIRE engine, to take the joy of driving to a new level. So plainly, the Indica vista changes the way you look at style.

3. Tata Indigo Tata Motors made its entry into the mid-size passenger car segment with the unveiling of its Tata sedan in 2002. It has received periodic updates with the most recent being an exterior and interior facelift in 2006. Available in both Diesel and Petrol engine versions, the Tata Indigo sedan has been conceptualized and designed by Tata Motors in-house styling studio at the Engineering research center along with a leading Italian design house.

4. Tata Safari Tata Motors premium SUV, the Tata safari is equipped with an indigenously developed direct injection common rail (DICOR) turbo changed interceded diesel engine. Equipped with the latest in the diesel technology, the Tata Safari DiCOR ensures responsive, powerful performance and enhanced fuel efficiency. It is available in 4*2 and 4*4 versions.

Commercial Vehicles 1. Tata Ace

In May 2005, Tata Ace, India's first four-wheel mini truck was launched, and it changed the face of sub 1-tonne goods-carriage in India forever. The success of the Tata Ace shook up the market and within the first year of it production, Tata Motors sold 30, 000 Aces, and demand more than doubled to 70, 000 in next year. With time, the numbers of Ace vehicles on the road grew from strength to strength and by 2010, there were over 500, 000 Ace vehicles on the road. Today Ace has emerged as the single-largest commercial vehicle brand in the country. By delivering a superior and safer driving experience, and the chance to garner more earnings, the Ace has not only met the expectations of the thousands of owner-operators across the country, it in fact, exceeded them to create a new paradigm in cargo movement. But the story of Ace doesn't end there, Tata Motors continued to hone and extend the Ace product line and India's first mini truck evolved with India's ever-changing commercial landscape. Today, products from the Ace family such as the Ace CNG, Ace EX and the powerful, ultra-stylish 1-tonne mini truck - Super Ace have met with great enthusiasm. With the launch of Tata Magic in June 2007, the passenger variant of the Ace, the platform's success crossed over into passenger transport as well. 2. TATA Prima:

The new Prima range of trucks offer several applications to meet varied end-user requirements. Their design and manufacture conform to safety regulations and emission standards that differ from state to state, country to country. In fact, they are Euro III, Euro IV compliant, and Euro V ready. They also have a universal appeal. For corporates, they are business tools that run at the lowest possible cost. The tried and tested suspension has its origins in USA. The sheet metal dies have been sourced from the best in Japan and Korea. And the cab has been fabricated with Swedish precision on a robotic weld line.

Tata Motors manufacturing plants are situated at Jamshedpur in the East, Pune and Sanand in the West and Lucknow and Pantnagar in the North.

Jamshedpur Plant:

Established in 1945, the Jamshedpur unit was the Company's first unit and is spread over an area of 822 acres. It consists of four major divisions - Truck Factory, Engine Factory, Cab & Cowl Factories.

The Truck Division boasts of two assembly lines. The main assembly line, measuring 180 m in length has 20 work stations with a vehicle rolling out every 8 minutes. The other line is dedicated to special purpose vehicles and for meeting the requirements of the Indian Army.

The uniqueness of the Factory lies in its possession of: Advanced facilities for manufacturing long members

comprising of a set-up of 5000 tones Hydraulic press line, cut-to-length line for strip preparation purchased from M/S Kohler of Germany and a chamber correction line.

Facility for hot forming of axle halves of 3000 tone press and health furnace.

Flexibility in manufacturing frames with an off line Proto-typing facility.

The Cab & Cowl Factory is equipped with state-of-art facilities like Centralized Paint Shop and Automated painting set up, Robot painting, BIW Fabrication of day & sleeper cabs for trucks, Articulates (Tractor/ Trailer), BIW Fabrication of Cowls for buses, and other miscellaneous applications.

The Engine Factory is responsible for the in-house manufacture of Tata 697/497 Naturally Aspirated and Turbo Charged engines, and the 6B series engines manufactured at Tata Cummins.

Pune Plant:

The Pune unit is spread over two geographical regions- Pimpri (800 acres) and Chinchwad (130 acres).

It was established in 1966 and has a Production Engineering Division, which has one of the most versatile tool making facilities in the Indian sub-continent.

It houses a Vehicle manufacturing complex which is one of the most integrated automotive manufacturing centres in the Country producing a large variety of individual items and aggregates.

It is engaged in the design and manufacture of sophisticated press tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, metal pattern and special tools, as well as models for the development of new ranges of automobile products.

Its capabilities have enabled Tata Motors to introduce new products and improve existing ones without resorting to import of dies or fixtures.

Over the years, this division has developed expertise in design and manufacture of automated dies, fixtures and welding equipment. Its large design group is fully conversant with state-of-the-art CAD facilities and manufacturing facilities comprising of light and heavy CNC machine shops, jigs boring room, plastic template shop, wood pattern and model pattern shop, five axis precision machine tools and laser control machines.

The Passenger Car Division in 'K' block executes the entire process of car manufacture over five shops - the engine shop, the transmission shop, press and body shops, paint shop and the trim and final assembly shop. The shops are fully automated ensuring that there is minimal chance for error in the manufacturing process.

After the car is completely assembled, it goes through several checks like wheel alignment, sideslip test, brake test, shower test,

and a short test run before it is ready for dispatch. All systems such as materials management, maintenance and other activities are computerized, enabling smooth operations and minimum inventory needs.

Lucknow Plant:

Tata Motors Lucknow is one of the youngest production facilities among all the Tata Motors locations and was established in 1992 to meet the demand for Commercial Vehicles in the Indian market. The state-of-the-art plant is strongly backed by an Engineering Research Centre and Service set-up to support with latest technology and cater to the complexities of automobile manufacturing. Fully Built Vehicle business, which is one of the fast growing areas of our business, is also established in Lucknow.

Lucknow plant rolls out commercial vehicles and is specialized in the designing and manufacturing of a range of modern buses which includes Low floor, Ultra Low floor, CNG & RE buses.

The Lucknow facility also specializes in manufacturing HCBS (High capacity Bus System) buses.

In light of Company’s aggressive growth plans, we are currently in expansion phase and production at Lucknow would grow many-fold in near future.

The expansion shall be in the areas of painting, welding, vehicle assembly & testing and utility services, driven by latest technology.

Pant Nagar Plant:

The Company has set up a plant for its mini-truck Ace and the passenger carrier Magic (based on the Ace platform) at Pantnagar in Uttarakhand.

The plant began commercial production in August 2007. This is the company's fourth plant, after Jamshedpur (commercial vehicles), Pune (commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles) and Lucknow (commercial vehicles).

The plant is spread over 953 acres, of which 337 acres is occupied by the vendor park.

State-of-the-art facilities include weld shops, paint shops, engine and gear box shops and assembly lines.

The Company has invested over Rs.1000 crores in the plant. Vendors for the vehicle have made additional investments to set up their plants in the vendor park adjoining the plant.

The operation has generated about 7500 direct and indirect jobs in the plant, among vendors and service providers in the area.

Sanand Plant:

Tata Motors’ plant for the Tata Nano at Sanand, in Ahmedabad district of Gujarat, marks the culmination of the Company’s goal of making the Tata Nano available to hundreds of thousands of families, desirous of the car a safe, affordable and environmental friendly mode of transport.

The capacity of the plant, to begin with, will be 250,000 cars per year to be achieved in phases, and with some balancing is expandable up to 350,000 cars per year. Provision for further capacity expansion has also been incorporated in this location.

Built in a record time of 14 months starting November 2008, the integrated facility comprises Tata Motors’ own plant, spread over 725 acres and an adjacent vendor park, and spread over 375 acres to house key component manufacturers for the Tata Nano.

In line with latest world-class manufacturing practices, the Tata Nano plant has been equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. They include sophisticated robotics and high speed production lines.

Conscious of the critical need of environment protection, the plant has energy-efficient motors, variable frequency drives, and systems to measure and monitor carbon levels. These are supplemented with extensive tree plantation, sustainable water sourcing through water harvesting and ground water recharging and harnessing solar energy for illumination.
