Organizing: _2_ Participating: _2_ DESCRIPTION: I. General Description: The second general meeting of the school year provided an opportunity to discuss upcoming projects (education outreach and a beach clean-up) as well as a bowling social event. Initiation details were discussed as well as a coffee with faculty opportunity. Members were recruited for a TBP Frisbee team. The meeting ended with a rubber band shooting competition._ II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: General meetings allow members socialize and discuss club topics. These events are usually well attended, especially when held at the end of a school day._ III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) ___ Yes _X_ No The meeting was overseen by eight officers and one professor. IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: The meeting required one planning session and $60 for pizza._ V. Special Problems: ___None.________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________ VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): The meeting had a strong showing and the pizza was very popular. It was important to roll through the general announcements rather quickly (20 minutes or less) in order to allow for more socializing. The rubber band shooting contest involved launching rubber bands to a certain distance with only a few minutes of practice. This activity was low on cost but got many members involved. __

Special Problems: ____None._________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________ VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): The event was fun, but had low attendance. I feel that the event was well advertised and low attendance was because the event took place on a Wednesday in order to get college night pricing at the bowling alley. It would have been better if we were playing on a weekend, but then it would have been more expensive. My recommendation is that in the future people should sign up for the event to make sure we have higher attendance, or the event should be planned on the weekend and members should contribute to the fee.

Activity: Homemade batteries

• We will make batteries using the zinc-copper cell

– Zinc from galvanized steel sheeting ($1/sheet at Home Depot)

– Copper from pennies– Acetic acid (just vinegar!) and

hydrogen peroxide electrolyte, both available at the grocery store!

• Stack them up and measure the voltage, then try to light up your LEDs!

– 2 cells will light red LED, 3 cells needed for blue LED

• Read your instruction handout to build your batteries and run experiments

Zinc

Copper

Vinegar soaked paper towel

}

Each sandwich forms a single cell – stack multiple on top of

each other for “series” connection: higher voltage
