Today is Wednesday, August 22, 2018 This is Amnesty Week in the Media Center. If you have an overdue book, you can bring it to the Media Center and ask that the fine be deleted. If you owe a fine on a returned book, you can ask us to delete that fine. You must come to the Media Center this week to have your fines forgiven. Take advantage of this opportunity and get yourself off the due list! Are you singer? Are you passionate about performing? Then you might be the next Tavares Idol! Those interested in this years Tavares Idol competition are encouraged to attend an informative meeting during Learning Opportunities on Monday, August 27. At this meeting we will discuss the audition process and how to prepare to be the next Tavares Idol! Auditions will be held after school on Thursday, September 6 and Friday, September 7 with the show being performed on September 13 at 6:00 PM in the THS Auditorium. Tavares Idol is being sponsored by the THS Chorus and Theatre Department. See Mr. Batko if you have any questions. GUIDANCE Counselors will resume schedule changes today. Counselors will resume schedule changes today. Students , you must have permission from your teacher to come to the guidance office for a change. Counselors will be available during both lunches in the Guidance Office as well for changes. Friday is the last day for changes.

ATHLETICS

Student sports passes will be on sale during lunches. Passes cost $30.00, and include a free THS Bulldog T shirt for football games. Purchasing a sports pass gets students free entry to all regular season home events. See Coach Raczkowski for more details.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Special Olympics is looking for volunteers to assist with the county bowling competition on September 8th at Breakpoint Alley from 7:30-1:00. Please see Ms. Vineyard in 5-101 for more information.

gesticulateMinor Act Word of the Day:You probably wouldn't guess that the -cul in gesticulate was related to the -cul in minuscule, but here's the connection: they're both derived from Latinate diminutive forms, of which cul is a tell-tale clue. In the case of gesticulate, the underlying form is gestus, "act," from which we also get gesture and jest. So when you gesticulate you perform a little gesture — usually while speaking.

1485 - The War of the Roses ended with the death of England's King Richard III. He was killed in the Battle of Bosworth Field. His successor was Henry V II.

1567 - The "Council of Blood" was established by the Duke of Alba. This was the beginning of his reign of terror in the Netherlands.

1989 - Nolan Ryan became the first major league pitcher to strike out 5000 batters. (MLB)

1990 - U.S. President George H.W. Bush signed an order for calling reservists to aid in the build up of troops in the Persian Gulf.

1990 - The U.S. State Department announced that the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait would not be closed under President Saddam Hussein's demand.

1990 - Angry smokers blocked a street in Moscow to protest the summer-long cigarette shortage.

1991 - It was announced by Yugoslavia that a truce ordered on August 7th with Croatia had collapsed.

1991 - Mikhail S. Gorbachev returned to Moscow after the collapse of the hard-liners' coup. On the same day he purged the men that had tried to oust him.

1992 - In Rostock, Germany, neo-Nazi violence broke out against foreigners.

1996 - U.S. President Clinton signed legislation that ended guaranteed cash payments to the poor and demanded work from recipients.

1998 - "The Howard Stern Radio Show" premiered on CBS to about 70% of the U.S.

2004 - In Oslo, Norway, a version of Edvard Munch's "The Scream" and his work "Madonna" were stolen from the Munch Museum. This version of "The Scream," one of four different versions, was a tempera painting on board.
