In 2003, when both John Geisler and the late Sheriff Andrew Meloni were receiving rehabilitation services following their strokes, they discovered more support was needed in the community to help people deal with the drastic life changes that come following a stroke. With the help of Rochester Rehabilita-tion, these friends started the Stroke Support Group that has lasted more than a decade! Even after the passing of his friend, John remains an important part of the group which meets monthly for social, educational, and support opportunities. John enjoys being part of a group where members share stories, and receive encouragement and information on technology and programs that are available to help with independence and life quality. With the recent partnership of Rochester Rehabilitation and CP Rochester, the Stroke Support Group has now expanded its services to many other people like John who are living full and productive lives.

William (Bill) Weir and his wife Joyce were introduced to CP Rochester in 1987 seeking services for their daughter. Caitlin attended the children’s program, and later participated in recreational programs. To help Caitlin experience the most out of life, Bill and Joyce enrolled her in Shared Ski Adventures (SSA) which is an adaptive, learn-to-ski program for people of all abilities. Bill joined the group as a volunteer and spent many years recruiting and training other volunteers. To enhance the program and

provide it with additional stability, Bill helped bring SSA to CP Rochester. His work to promote the program, find funding, and recruit new volunteers has resulted in its suc-cess. Bill has spearheaded a long-term Day of Caring team from Nixon Peabody - where volunteers have donated countless hours of work and materials for garden and yard repair at CP Rochester’s Jefferson Road residence. He also coordinates a group of Nixon Peabody volunteers to support the agency’s Adopt-a-Family for the holidays program. Bill is a former Treasurer and Chairman of the Al Sigl Board of Trustees and currently serves on the Al Sigl Board of Governors.

Several years ago, Professor Joanna Scott approached CP Rochester inquiring about a volunteer position. She was assigned to work with two of the residents at our Lone Oak residence on ‘literacy.’ What transpired was much more than reading books together. Joanna, an acclaimed au-thor and University of Rochester professor, worked with the two women on writing their own personal stories. It was so inspiring for the three of them that they developed a much larger program that would open the

experience for many others. For the past six years, the Inspiration Project has brought together writing students from the U of R and adults served by CP Rochester. The stu-dents interview the participants and transcribe their responses. By working together, the teams create wonderful, polished literary works. Joanna’s efforts and dedication both to the students and program participants have resulted in countless friendships.

Jeff Baker’s experience with CP Rochester began when he volunteered for a Gym-and-Swim program in the late 1980s. Together with his son and daughter, Jeff supported the program held at the Elmwood Campus pool. What started as a family community engagement opportunity for Jeff, quickly lead to a lifelong commitment. As an attorney, Jeff made an ideal member of our Board of Directors and has served on a variety of com-mittees including Finance, Communications, Corporate Compliance, and

Executive. He has helped lead CP Rochester through many milestones in our history. Jeff and his wife Carol attend the agencies’ numerous fundraising events. He continues to support the children we serve by volunteering to help in our pool every week.

Thank you CP Rochester and Rochester Rehabilitation for all

you do for our community.

Mr. John Horvath - Humanitarian of the Year

The Kurz Family - Harold C. Augustin Founders Award

When John and Rosemarie Horvath moved to Rochester in 1968, they sought out the services of CP Rochester for their son, Timm, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. It was at that time John began his unwav-ering support to our agency. A ‘numbers man’ by career, he was instru-mental in the 1968 Fund Drive which helped build our home with the Al Sigl Community of Agencies on Elmwood Avenue. Over the past 48 years, John has supported CP Rochester through the perspective of both

businessman and parent. His many years of professional experience as a partner with Arthur Anderson brought financial management expertise to our Board and enabled John to guide financial management practices at both the local and state levels. He has also served on the boards of United Cerebral Palsy Associations of New York State and The Al Sigl Community of Agencies where he has filled numerous roles.

In 1961, Dick and Kay Kurz welcomed their daughter, Ann, into the world. Following Ann’s diagnosis of cerebral palsy at the age of two, her parents were referred to CP Rochester. Dick and Kay became active with the Parents’ Association which supported families dealing with the challenges of cerebral palsy. It wasn’t long before Dick became a member (and eventually Chair) of the Board of Directors. Kay spoke

to many new parents in the early days, and accompanied Dick to national meetings, acting as a sounding board and advisor. Ann participated in our preschool services, ob-tained her degrees from Trinity in D.C. and the University of Rochester, and is success-fully employed as a Customer Insights Analyst for Wegmans. She became a member of the Board of Directors in 1991. Together, the contributions of the Kurz Family will live on for many years to come.

less work in the Finger Lakes community and with Hobart and William Smith Colleges. In 2008, the International Student Association at Hobart and William Smith created and awarded the First Annual Mary Herlihy Gearan Award for Outstanding Contribu-tions to the International Community, honoring the long-standing commitment of Gearan to the development of the international community on campus. When he was six months old, Jeff Yarmel was diagnosed with ce-rebral palsy. Jeff’s parents, who lived on Long Island, enrolled him in services through a United Cerebral Palsy affiliate agency. As a youth, Jeff attended several schools and received his GED. In their search to find more services, the family moved to Monroe County. When a vacancy became available at one of CP Rochester’s resi-dential homes, Jeff moved in. He receives speech therapy at CP Rochester and attends the agency’s day habilitation program where he works on goals to become more independent. He also volunteers in the Respite program. As president of the Aktion Club, a program of the Brighton Kiwanis, Jeff helps with a variety of fun-draising and community engagement opportunities. Jeff’s won-derful sense of humor shows through his constant smile. Known as someone who is always willing to help out where needed, Jeff is seen daily working with CP Rochester’s workshop volunteers and the Al Sigl maintenance staff.

19 year-old Solomiya Blekot excelled in her academics, wasinvolved in extracurricular activities, played varsity sports, participated in clubs and competitions, and played piano. She also volunteered in the community and co-authored two articles on neurology and cancer. Solomiya had been accepted into RIT with her dream to become a doctor. But a devastating car accident changed the course of her life. She spent months in inpatient rehabilitation and now receives outpatient services in physical, occupational, speech, and pool therapies through CP Rochester. Her family is glad that she has regained her voiceand can talk with her. She still struggles with her memory and movement, but Solomiya is very strong-willed. She works hard with her therapists to regain mobility, and has set goals ofwalking again and living more independently. BenOfficial Goods™ is a start-up company created to help fill the gap in work opportunities for individu-als of differing abilities. BenOfficial Goods™ provides meaningful em-ployment to individuals who are sup-

ported by Hap-piness House, CP Rochester, and Rochester Rehabilitation. The goal is to es-tablish rewarding work environ-ments for adults with special

needs that encourages, supports, and fosters their success in an inclu-sive work setting.

Founded by Ability Partners Board of Directors’ member Andy Bonafi-glia, BenOfficial Goods™ is named in honor of her son, Francis ‘Ben’ Bonafiglia.

The products sold under the BenOffi-cial Goods™ name are created, pack-aged, and/or distributed by BenOf-ficial Goods™ employees, providing meaningful work which promotes a sense of accomplishment and pride - while earning a paycheck. Enriching the experience is a supportive, safe work setting that allows for the de-velopment of new relationships and a sense of belonging while learning the skills necessary to be a successful employee.

BenOfficial Goods™ presently carries salsas, nuts, preserves, and special butters, and recently added greeting cards created by the photography club at Happiness House in Canan-daigua. All profits from the sale of these goods are returned to Happi-ness House, CP Rochester, and Roch-ester Rehabilitation so they may continue to develop and enhance support services for people of all abilities as they search for their own pathway in life.

BenOfficial Goods™ vision includes placing its products at small gift shops and grocery stores, and some-day in its own storefront. In the meantime, customers can find the products at charitable events and local festivals. The goal is to strive for a day when BenOfficial Goods™ can provide ALL people who have a spe-cial need… a very special job.

Visit www.benofficialgoods.org for more information, a complete listing of available products, and ways you can help.

This table also helps develop and refine cognitive, social and emotional, physical, creative, and linguistic skills.

Throughout Rochester Rehabilitation’s history, three values – Work, Wellness, and Independence – have remained at its core. We have served the Rochester-area community since 1919 with an array of physical, mental health, and employment services. Working with a $7 million annual operating budget, the agency serves 2,500 people living with mental health, cognitive, and physical disabilities, as well as other disadvantages including those living in poverty and refugees. The agency has an outpatient mental health clinic, Ventures Personalized Recovery Oriented Services (PROS), and an extensive array of vocational programming services. Its DriveOn program is a driver evaluation and training service, while its OneSource Solutions operates three business ventures that employ more than 150 workers with and without disabilities.
