SALES TAX

Sales tax is the additional amount of money charged on an item that people buy

Tax = percent x price

The total cost of an item is the price plus the tax

Total cost = price + tax OR Total cost = (100 + percent) x price

Examples

Drew wants to buy exercise equipment

that costs $140 and the sales tax is 575

What is the total cost of the equipment

METHOD 1

Find the sales tax

Add the tax to the price

Tax = percent (price)

Tax = 00575(140)

Tax = 805

Total Cost = price + tax

Total Cost = 140 + 805

Total Cost = $14805

METHOD 2

Add the percent of the tax to 100

(100 of the price + the of tax)

Multiply by the price

100 + 575 = 10575

Total cost = 10575(140)

Total Cost = $14805

Who do I tip

Waiter Waitress

Calculating a tip

Tip = price ( percent)

Calculating total cost

Total = price + tip OR Total = (100 + percent)(price)

Example

SALES TAX

Sales tax is the additional amount of money charged on an item that people buy

Tax = percent x price

The total cost of an item is the price plus the tax

Total cost = price + tax OR Total cost = (100 + percent) x price

Examples

Drew wants to buy exercise equipment

that costs $140 and the sales tax is 575

What is the total cost of the equipment

METHOD 1

Find the sales tax

Add the tax to the price

Tax = percent (price)

Tax = 00575(140)

Tax = 805

Total Cost = price + tax

Total Cost = 140 + 805

Total Cost = $14805

METHOD 2

Add the percent of the tax to 100

(100 of the price + the of tax)

Multiply by the price

100 + 575 = 10575

Total cost = 10575(140)
