MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Each year I find myself writing a farewell message to a new group of students who are leaving the college after spending valuable and hopefully enjoyable time with us pursuing their studies.

Each year I marvel at how they have grown as young people and have changed from the day they walked through our doors for the first time.

And each year I feel a sense of wonder at the results they have achieved during their relatively short time with us at Taylors College.

Now it is time to farewell the class of 2010.

I ask each of you to cast your mind back to when you arrived in this country or first walked onto this campus. Try to recall how you felt, what you thought. Try to remember your impression of orientation day, your first class, the things you felt uncertain about and the people who helped you.

Now switch to the present. List the areas in which you have changed. Are you more confident? Are you more self assured? Are you less worried about the future? Are you ready for the next stage of your educational journey?

I would hope you all would be able to answer positively for most of my questions.

I am sure your parents, friends and teachers would say they have seen you grow and mature and if they are right then we, here at Taylors have done a good part of our job.

If you are now set to confidently advance to tertiary study in both an academic sense and in a social sense, then you individually, and we collectively can be proud of the outcome.

My sincere thanks to you all for contributing to the proud history of Taylors College. You have now joined a long line of students who have benefitted through studying with us over the past 90 years. I am sure the vast majority of the class of 2010 will be seen to soar high in life. I look forward to hearing of your successes.

My best wishes to you all for the future

CONGRATULATIONS TO AMIRUL YAMIN FOR DESIGNING THE 2010 YEARBOOK COVER!

Winning the privilege of designing the yearbook cover is a great achievement for me because my name will be remembered for a long time at Taylors College. In the future I would like to study Politics and Photography, and later I want to become a Lord Mayor like my dad. Amirul Yamin

Students who achieved academic excellence in their first semester studies were invited to attend morning tea with the principal and deans. Ninety three students across year 10, 11, 12 and MUFY were presented with a certificate of academic excellence. The High School Deans were delighted to acknowledge all students but were impressed by those year 12 students who started at Taylors College as year 10 students and maintained high grades across three years. In addition 14 MUFY students were acknowledged for achieving the highest academic score across all MUFY providers in a unit of study and were given the Monash Academic Award for Excellence.

HIGH ACHIEVERSACKNOWLEDGEMENTS & DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Each year, Mr Cranshaw and I write parting messages to students who are graduating from Taylors College trying, as much as possible, not to say the same thing. The difficulty is that we both hope you have all gained from your stay at Taylors and that your futures will be everything you have hoped for.

This year is the 90th birthday of Taylors College and you are the graduates (or soon to be graduates) of this milestone year in the history of Taylors. Taylors will undoubtedly go on to celebrate its centenary and beyond and students of 2010 will be added to the thousands of students who have already made this College a stepping stone to their future dreams.

In our 90th year we also look back to former students, our alumni, who have featured prominently in Australian society. Not many Taylor’s students today know that Taylors College has been part of the lives of a Governor General of Australia, movie stars, famous footballers, war heroes and financiers. As we approach our official celebration of 90 years, you will see details of some past students who are now known throughout Australia and, in some cases, the world.

Every year when we wave goodbye to students as they start their university studies, many of us think about which individuals will achieve fame in one area or another. We would like to think that every student who leaves Taylors has gained the confidence to gain the most from their time with us.

Taylors College is not only about the past. This year we have started new programs which will develop over the new few years to offer multiple pathways to students’ university of choice. As you will see from the birthday display, Taylors College has always tried to move with the times and respond to the needs of students.

May I add my good wishes to those of Mr Cranshaw. You have a few hills to climb before you achieve your career goals, but I hope you will always feel you can keep in touch with Taylors throughout your life. It would be wonderful to have you all as members of our alumni.

The Yearbook Editor would like to thank Dominique Wylestone, Paul Mangan, Raoul Chapman, Robyn McDonald, Ken George and Kim Harrison for their support and expertise in the creation of the yearbook. The Editor also acknowledges with gratitude the generous contributions of the staff and students. Barbara Williams

Congratulations to the Taylors College VCE class 2010! Year 12 this yearly has run smoothly with students keeping up the high standards that we expect at Taylors College. I feel privileged this year to have been Dean of Year 12. It has been wonderful to follow students throughout the year and see them mature and work hard to achieve their goals.

My thanks to you all for making Year 12 2010, a memorable one. Highlights for me were the Melbourne University Visit, the Careers Day Extravaganza, weekly feasts in Home Rooms, the Bush Dance and of course the Year 12/MUFY formal.

My sincere thanks to your Home Room Teachers, Ms Felvus, Ms Latham, Mr Lee Brown, Ms Ma, Ms McDonald, Ms Sotiriou and Ms Suss for supporting you throughout the year. Thanks also to all of your

Year 12 teachers who put in a huge effort to prepare you for your examinations and your future.

I would like to also thank the Careers Team, for guiding and preparing you with your university entrance applications. Special thanks to Mr Latham who looked after Year 12 this year. Final thanks to Ms Viglione our VCAA and Examinations Officer and Ms Baude and Ms Fabiyanic for assisting me this year.

I hope that you all gain entry to the tertiary institutions of your choice and that you remember your time in Year 12 at Taylors College as a very rewarding experience.

Rosa Zull Year 12 Dean

John M Richardson, an American academic has been credited with the following,

“When it comes to the future, there are three kinds of people: those who let it happen, those who make it happen, and those that wonder what happened.”

Jessica Watson, a young Australian sailor, sailed around the world non-stop and unassisted in her boat Ella’s Pink Lady. In May, as Jessica stepped ashore in Sydney after her eight month journey, we were reminded how remarkable young people can be, especially when they set their minds to making things happen.

Jessica’s journey began with fairly intense discussions as to whether someone so young should be so far from the supervision of her parents? And whether her task was too great? Would she endure the loneliness of her time away? Would, or could, she fulfil her responsibilities to her sponsors? Would the learning she achieved from this journey be any different from the learning she could achieve from staying at home?

For many MUFY students the decision to leave home and study in Australia invokes the same range of questions. To determine whether or not being at Taylors and studying MUFY has met initial expectations, all students need to ask three questions;

1) Did I let things happen? 2) Did I make things happen? Or 3) Am I wondering what happened?

Taylors College is pleased you made the journey to study with us. We understand the challenges you have faced and the personal growth you have achieved. On behalf of all staff, we thank you for being part of our 90th year of Taylors education in Melbourne.

As you move forward, I hope, like Jessica Watson, you can state “I’m just an ordinary person who had a dream and I made that dream happen”.

Deans – Foundation Year

Margaret Dawson, Helen Spark and Rita Fontanella

Many thanks are due to many people for a quite extraordinary 2010 at Taylors College. In the bustle of activities of a busy school year, it is hoped that everyone associated with Taylors College High School will have flourished and will leave us with fond memories.

The magazine itself attests that the year has been a very full and fruitful one. The variety of academic and other activities which go to make up the year never ceases to surprise me. Thank you to each student for your involvement, openness and cooperation, to each member of staff for your dedication to

the students and professional approach to their education, and to each parent your trust in us and your continuous support and encouragement.

To all our Year 10 and 11 students we hope that you have a restful break and come back revitalised and ready for learning in 2011. For all our Year 12 students who will be leaving us at the end of the year, best of luck in your up and coming exams.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL

Two years being an SRC member was an unforgettable time for me. It gave me many precious communication skills. Moreover, there were some great feel-good moments, like when I saw the photos of the school that was built in Vietnam with the help of our chocolate and healthy snack fundraising. Thanks to Mrs. Williams and all SRC members. Jenny

Being an SRC member gave me many experiences and profound memories. I met many new and good friends, and became much more confident in speaking to a crowd. Thank you SRC! I love you guys! Ninh

It was a pleasure to be a member of the SRC. Those were really wonderful days. I learned heaps of things. It was a really great experience. I won’t forget it ever. Mohammad

Through the SRC, I made friends with tons of people from different parts of the world. Plus, I got to help out in school activities and be involved in charity work! It’s been tons of fun! Cindy

The most exciting thing at Taylors for me is getting into the SRC. I made many new friends from different grades, and working with brilliant fellow SRC members was also a wonderful experience. Besides being great fun, I learned a lot. Not only did I improve my English ability, but I also learned many useful organisational skills, which can help me my whole life. Joining the SRC was my most valuable experience. Simon

I am very proud to be a member of the SRC. That was really a special thing in my high school life.

This special group taught me that community needs reliable and responsible people. I really want to thank my SRC President Katie. She was the responsible model who did all the hard work and was always the first person to volunteer. She showed me that a student can do more things than study and we do have the capacity. It is all good to join the SRC. You can improve yourself and make actual changes for your community. Bing

I benefited from being in the SRC by being more involved in this school and getting to know the Australian studying style better. My English improved very much and I became more confident speaking to a crowd. Carol

The SRC was like a home to me where everyone did things and had fun together. I learned a lot from my friends and Barbara, our beloved coordinator and thanks to all of them, I had the greatest year in high school. Thank you all!!! Katie

The SRC this year, were an amazingly enthusiastic and positive group of young people. They truly represented the needs of others. For example, Faraz Ashraf Nizami, a student from Pakistan, approached the SRC with a great concern to help the flood victims in Pakistan. So the SRC members raised over $900 by speaking to class groups about the flood victims’ plight. Earlier in the year, the SRC managed to raise over $900 for the China Earthquake victims and nearly $3,000 to help build a school in Vietnam’s poorest regions by selling healthy snacks and chocolates. I am very honoured to have worked closely with these remarkable students. Barbara

This year, although most of the students had no idea how to dance or even know what a bush dance was, an enormous crowd turned up to dance the afternoon away to the happy live music of the ‘Three Corner Jack’ Bush Band. Even just watching the dancers was so entertaining; one couldn’t help but laugh with delight. It was especially exciting to see Mr Tony Cranshaw enjoy dancing with the students. The room was filled with the smell of fresh gum leaves. The Aussie flag, an open

fire and a barn backdrop with a hay bale added to the genuine atmosphere. The yummy Aussie food and refreshments (ginger beer, sandwiches, egg tarts, sausages, lamingtons, meringues, cakes, etc.) were a welcome break for the hot, exhausted dancers, who in no time went back to the floor for more wheeling and jigging. We even managed to raise money for Haiti Earthquake victims by selling chocolate and holding the Lucky Dip.

LUNAR NEW YEAR

On Monday Feb 15, the second day of the Lunar New Year, Taylors College came alive with bright and noisy celebrations. Two lions and 20 performers from the Chinese Culture Centre of Victoria entertained and delighted students and staff. The cheeky lions jumped on the tables and even the reception desk, shocking poor Kaye one of our receptionists. The lions ‘ate’ a female student, took Nan, one of our teachers for a ride and jumped on my shoulders. They’re getting more imaginative each year!

Thanks to the help of staff, who prepared the tables, the food was a real hit, Chinese snacks, fruit, drinks, spring rolls, chocolate coins, fortune cookies, sticky rice cake, jellies and more. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement and the picture of happy smiles and wide eyes was delightful.

Tiger people are sensitive, given to deep thinking, capable of great sympathy. They can be extremely short-tempered, however. Other people have great respect for them, but sometimes tiger people come into conflict with older people or those in authority. Sometimes Tiger people cannot make up their minds, which can result in a poor, hasty decision or a sound decision arrived at too late. They are suspicious of others, but they are courageous and powerful. Tigers are most compatible with Horses, Dragons, and Dogs

Year 10 students at Taylors College Melbourne completed a very successful camp at Lyrebird Park in the south east of Victoria. For many of them, it’s the first camp they attended and their first glimpse of country Victoria. Despite their apprehension about the week ahead many said it was the best week they had and wanted to go to camp again.

Tug of War: “We beat the strongest team by cooperating.”

Many students found themselves tested physically and mentally by the tasks put before them such as the trust fall and the low ropes course. With the support of the camp instructors who emphasised building on strengths and trust amongst the group, the students eagerly accepted the challenges to overcome their doubts.

Walking through the bush at night seemed a daunting task to many. With no torches allowed they had to rely on each other to follow the path but the result was worth the effort with a great view of the stars once we reached the clearing. “The best memory is going through the forest during the night without a light”.

A firm favourite was the flying fox where students had to climb a tree before being attached to the guide line. This was definitely a challenge for some but they knew their friends were supporting them on the ground with ropes and other safety equipment. “It was like I was standing on the top of a mountain and getting ready to jump down. Finally I closed my eyes and did it. That feeling was so fantastic”.

As well as learning to appreciate their strengths and the support of each other they also were able to see their teachers in a whole new light. “I learnt that cooperation is very important in our life”. All too soon the four days came to an end with many students saying they wish they could go again. “I made many new friends, became brave and trusted my friends! This was the best experience! If possible I wish I can go again”.

Dianne Fabiyanic Year 10 Dean

As a part of Year 10 Business, students completed a unit on Careers. This involved each student taking on the role of a character that has finished school and is applying for their first job. Students studied the importance of writing a well planned resume with clear descriptions of their skills and qualifications. They also combined this with the need to introduce themselves well and pique the interest of prospective employers with well written application letters. Each student was assigned a staff member who would interview them as if they were applying for a real position in a company. The ultimate goal was to win the position by excelling in the job interview. After completing their first interview they had the following advice for next year’s Year 10’s:

• Be calm and confident • Make eye contact with the interviewer • Prepare carefully • Know about the job and company • Dress professionally • Be prepared for extra questions

Our two All-Stars basketball teams’ convincing victories over representative teams from RMIT Foundation in May

The annual All-Stars tournament involved representative teams from Taylors College, RMIT Foundation and Charles Sturt University, and was held at MSAC, Albert Park on Sunday 23rd May. There were many outstanding players on the day, none more so than talented Year 12 students Terrence Chen and Cena Chan. In the end, the Taylors Students All-Stars were too good for the Taylors Graduates in the final, winning comfortably 59-39.

The Red Devils remarkable run to and through the finals of the Taylors Indoor Soccer Cup

The unfancied Red Devils, after just scraping in to the last four, pulled off two memorable wins – both in extra time – in the semi final and the grand final to take out the Indoor Soccer Cup in 2010. With a mix of Malaysian, Vietnamese, Saudi Arabian and Korean players, and on the back of sublime performances from Embassy student Evan Kim, the Red Devils proved that anything really is possible in sport.

The admirable performances of the Taylors Old Boys football club in Division 1 of the VGFL and in making the quarter finals of the season-ending Yamagata Cup

Harnessing the interest and enthusiasm of our current students, graduates & teachers, the Taylors Old Boys Football Club (TOBs FC) performed manfully in Division 1 of the Victorian Golden Football League this year. In a long and hard-fought home-and-away season, TOBs FC managed to defeat top team Odyssey FC, one of only two teams to do so, and qualified for the finals of the Yamagata Cup for the first time.

The continuation of the Year 10 Activity Day shield, paying tribute to the rich history of Taylors College

In its sixth year as part of the sports program at the school, the Year 10 Activity Days competition has seen our Year 10 students participate in mixed netball and touch rugby, orienteering and problem solving at Lyrebird Park, and basketball, badminton and table tennis at MSAC. The four teams competing in the shield this year have again taken their names from four of the most revered and influential figures in the long history of Taylors College: Taylor, Sexton, Williams and Bock.

THE TAYLORS INDOOR SOCCER CUP

With eight teams and over 80 participants, the Taylors Indoor Soccer Cup was held in the gym at University High School on Friday nights, and in the new stadium at the North Melbourne Recreation Centre on Saturday afternoons, throughout the year. The standings at the end of the regular season were:

Team W D L Pts

Barca Breakers 7 0 1 21 Royal Blue Kings 6 0 2 18 Red Devils 5 0 3 15 Yellow Submarines 4 0 4 12 White Warriors 3 0 5 9 Black Stallions 3 0 5 9 AC Scorpions 2 0 5 6 Orange Boys 0 0 7 0

The finals series will forever be remembered for the remarkable way that third-placed team the Red Devils, who had spent much of the season in the bottom half of the ladder, raised their playing level and commitment by pulling off two miraculous victories, both in extra time and when all seemed lost.

The final of the Taylors Indoor Soccer Cup, held on Saturday 21st August, pitted the two most experienced teams against each other with minor premier the Barca Breakers expected to be too strong for the Red Devils. The Red Devils, however, had other ideas and, on the back of Evan Kim’s match-winning hat-trick, they managed to hold on to a 4-3 lead in the dying seconds of extra time. This followed a similar result in the semi final against the Royal Blue Kings.

Well done to all players on a fantastic season, full of good sportsmanship, fun and exciting play!

TABLE TENNIS

Group games in the Taylors Table Tennis Cup were held after school in the level 1 foyer area in Term III. The following four players made it through to the semis: MUFY students Simon Cai, Aaron Chua, Shawn Tan and Year 12 student Brian Lu. The final is scheduled to be played during the Sports Presentation Night in October.

THE TAYLORS BASKETBALL CUP

With over 100 participants, representing eight teams, the Basketball Cup started in February and ended with the play-offs in August. Charles Sturt University was welcomed in to the cup for the first time. For the second year running, the Navy Seals topped the ladder at the end of the regular season:

Team W D L Pts

Navy Seals 8 0 0 24 Maroon Jets 5 1 2 16 Black Jacks 5 0 3 15 White Kings 4 0 4 12 Golden Phoenix 3 1 4 10 Green Dragons 2 1 5 9 CSU Lions 2 1 4 3 Royal Retros 0 0 7 0

The final saw the two best teams of the last two years against each other, Daemon Vu’s Navy Seals and Eric Yuen’s Black Jacks. The Black Jacks got out to a sizeable early lead, thanks to MUFY student and playmaker Tim Yeung and recent MUFY graduate Johnson Yang. The Navy Seals, led by the never-say-die attitude of Year 12 student Cena Chan, finished the game full of running and can be proud of getting within 5 points at the end, albeit losing 48-43.

Thanks to Colin Cheung, Kenny Lai, Wilson Lee, Daemon Vu, Ryan Chan and Jamie Pang for their unstinting support throughout the year.

BADMINTON

A small but dedicated group of players attended casual badminton sessions on Sunday afternoons at MSAC, Albert Park, throughout Term III, with representative boys’ and girls’ teams scheduled to participate in the the All Schools Badminton Championships in October.

TAYLORS SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR NOMINEES

Every year, students who best fulfil the following criteria – participation, fairness, skill and leadership – are nominated for the award of Sportsperson of the Year, the winner being named on the Sports Presentation Night. Congratulations to these three nominees (left to right): Year 12 student Brian Lu and MUFY students Aaron Chua and Hamad Al-Qahtani.

On Sunday August 15, Taylors College Year 10 students and four of their teachers watched a game of Aussie Rules Football at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground [MCG] or as Melbournians like to say “The G.” Students had the full cultural experience; they cheered for their favourite team with the 50 thousand other spectators, ate Aussie meat pies and went home wondering at the unreliable Melbourne weather which can have four seasons in one day. At first I thought football was a very boring sport. However, after watching it, I think it is an exciting and relaxing activity. You can scream and do whatever you want. It is a good activity for releasing pressure. Meng Na

Last weekend was AWESOME!!! I went to the MCG to watch Australian football, which is called footy. That was the first time in my life I’ve been to a huge stadium like that. The MCG is one of the biggest stadiums in the world. The game was just so wonderful. At first I didn’t understand the rules of the game but then Mr Villella and my friends helped me so then I enjoyed the game. During the match I screamed for Hawthorn and finally they won! I was so happy even though it rained and it was windy all day. Kelly

Sunday 15th of August was a day that I can never forget because that day was the first day I went to the biggest football ground in Melbourne – the MCG.

It was a very cold and cloudy day but I was still very interested. The match was between two teams, Melbourne and Hawthorn. They played really awesome. They played with everything they had but Melbourne was a little unlucky, so they lost in the last quarter.

Secondly, there were many friends of mine and teachers who came to the G. There was a guest who used to be my teacher – Mr Splatt. We watched the match together, we cheered when a team scored and I realised the girls – Jody, Anna and Jessie screamed louder than any of the boys and Mr Villella was pretty upset because Melbourne lost.

Thirdly, our seats were very good. We sat right under the roof, so rain was not a problem for us. We sat much higher than the ground so we could see the match very clearly.

In conclusion, the day was awesome. I hope my lovely teacher will give us more chances to visit the G. It’s the place to be at. Moon

It was the first time I watched a football game, I felt very excited. Also the teachers said I must try a meat pie because that is the thing you should do when you watch football, so I bought a meat pie with Louis and the meat pie was excellent. However, it was a cold and wet day. Tony

It was my first time to watch football, this kind of sport is special in Australia. Although I love sports so much I knew nothing about Australian football. We sat in the MCG and watched this match. I think football is so interesting. I was totally attracted by this sport; the players in the match are like heroes. They tried their best to win this match and while I was there my mind just followed them and I could not think of anything else. This was a perfect experience. I understand football now. Also I learned more about Australian culture. I’m hoping to get another chance to watch it again. Cici

On Wednesday July 14, Year 12 Biology students went to the University of Melbourne to do a study of genetics and genetic engineering.

“It was a very exhilarating journey travelling to Melbourne University for our Biology practical prior to our SAC about alleles and DNA. The first task we started working on was to place DNA samples in the well of a gel which was placed through

electrophoresis. While waiting for the different bands to separate, we examined fruit flies for different structures like vestigial wings and different alleles if the flies were cross-bred. Once the experiment was complete, the day ended perfectly with students being able to examine the bands of DNA under a fluorescent light. I found the trip very helpful in my knowledge and understanding about alleles and DNA.” Joe and Deric

The year 11 Unit One Biology class was given the opportunity to go on an excursion to the Melbourne Zoo. We went to the Melbourne Zoo and to get to learn about the reproduction of animals. While we were there, we were required to fill in a booklet - answering questions about the different types of animals and how the zoo helps with their reproduction. We were

allowed to go to zoo classroom to get up close and personal with many different animals, and learn about them in more detail. It was a fun experience which not only helped us learn, it also brought the class closer together. Emma Weymouth and Michelle Truong

This photo shows us standing on top of the cliff. Ms Tyers told us to draw a sketch of Hampton Beach. The students tried to draw what they saw. It was a bit difficult because we didn’t have a table. Anyway, it was a beautiful day, not hot, a little wind, wonderful. Frank

TAYLORS MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL 2010

On Wednesday afternoon April 21st Taylors College came alive with colours, music and excitement. Students and teachers came together to celebrate the cultural diversity found in Taylors College. Traditional costumes from many countries were worn, traditional and modern music and song, plenty of international food and games were enjoyed. Congratulations to Cindy Lee for winning the ‘Three Minutes to Fame’ Competition with her Malaysian song (Tony Cranshaw was the judge) and to the winners of the traditional costume competition, congratulations to Bhaama in her beautiful Indian outfit and Anne Marie in her gorgeous

Kenyan dress and jewellery. Mrs Brown and her model Tush with the spectacular hair won the Colour Hairspraying Competition. The students particularly loved the musical chairs and human knot games. We all cheered with delight at Hao’s cute Vietnamese song and dance. Great prizes were won. The SRC were on a high with the success and fun they had that evening. The President and Vice President of the SRC, Katie and Tash did a wonderful job as Master of Ceremonies. We managed to raise $240 for PLAN from the tickets and with the help of SGA to help build a school in Vietnam.

The evening started with the tongue – n – cheek Glee inspired show choir number “I Don’t Wanna Go to Rehab” by Amy Winehouse. Which was followed by the singers with a Neil Diamond hit song and “Comedy Tonight”. The jazz ‘boys’ were hot especially in “Sing, Sing, Sing”. Everyone returned for a Bollywood number “Jai Ho” from Slum Dog Millionaire with authentic classical Indian choreography.

Students presented solos and ensembles ranging from Argentinian tango composer Piazzolla to a beautiful traditional Chinese song “Wang Ning Nei”. Sara on violin and Andy on piano presented a sensitive Dvorak sonatine. Natalie then gave a cheerful reading of the shortest Beethoven sonata Op 10 No 2.

This concert included some wonderfully over talented ABRSM high scorers from the 2009 exams of whom Georgia Wilkinson stunned with her cheeky “Poor Wandering One”.

The choir ended with the serene Bruckner “Locus Iste” and our most ambitious work Handel’s very polyphonic “Hallelujah Chorus”. It was great to see staff in the audience supporting our students.

The end of semester concert got off to an appropriate start with a psalm of humility by Bernstein written through the eyes of youth. The pastoral inventive imitation of the choir was gracefully accompanied by FUNG Chi Han on violin. The bouncy Adoramus Te was followed by Queen’s rousing “Somebody to Love” featuring many soloists and gospel chorus. Thanks to LEE Shin Yii, WANG Hao and LIU Ji for belting out many of the solos!

A Mozart Piano Duet Sonata K521 with spectacular filigree, performed by LEE Tang Fong and ANG Wei Yang was enthusiastically received. Duke Ellington and Christopher Norton performed by JARERNRAJSAMEE Pimpapit and LIU Ji (wearing a funky hat) on piano and drums grooved along. The second half opened with Diploma students MAK Ho Hei performing Beethoven’s famous ‘Moonlight’ Sonata and closed with FUNG Chi Han and a spirited performance of a Bach Violin Concerto in E BWV 1042.

The thing I find the most exciting and peculiar to Taylors is that students come from all different countries and backgrounds. It makes you feel more confident. Lee

During Taylors College I made so many new friends from different countries. Darren

I used to hate Maths lessons, but I love my two neighbours, Ninh and Kenneth. They are such a bad influence. They made me talk and talk. Thanks to them, I now love Maths class. Renee

Good memory: The Multicultural Festivals in three consecutive years, three spectacular experiences. I enjoyed them a lot.

Bad memory: The first day I came to Taylors, I had to walk from the ground floor to level 10 due to a fire drill. Katie

I used to have trouble managing my emotions, sometimes it was due to homesickness, sometimes it was because of bad timetables, which I couldn’t accept. I cried a lot over many of those tiny things in my teacher Ms Zull’s office. She listened to everything I said. She was incredibly patient. I troubled her for three years and thank goodness I am going to leave her alone after this year. I hope she won’t get another

student like me next year. The best memory for me will be her great support throughout the year. She tried so hard to help me and what she did was the best thing I needed as an international student. I want to tell her that I will be stronger as this is the only way to be happy. Bing

The Formal party was really fantastic. We had four ballroom dancing classes before the formal. I made many new friends at the formal and during the dance class. Also, there were many different activities at the formal other than just dancing. There were two artists drawing our caricatures and professional photographers taking our photos. What’s more, I even got the prize for best ballroom dancing couple with Rita. It was a really exciting moment! Simon

GOOD MEMORIES:

Meeting friends and doing year 10 activities. Gabriel

Meeting friends, a nice study environment, useful and friendly teachers. Lena

Enjoing breakfast with friends in the common room. Jody

Experiencing new life skills at camp. Michael

Getting a prize at the Multicutural Festival. Hao

At the beginning, everything seemed so easy and simple. But then people started to get distracted and did not feel like studying. MUFY is a relatively short course, so make use of the time and just keep focused, so you can get into your chosen uni course. Renee

I found year 12 quite stressful. It’s always a good idea if you can distribute your time logically to prepare for the exams. Tutorial time is an excellent support if you have any queries outside class. Andrea

I have been a Taylors’ student since 2008. When my last days of high school finally arrived, it was really hard to say goodbye to my mates, and to my teachers. When you finish school, different personalities of teachers will be part of your best memory. People that are so different from you will have expanded your views. It’s a bit hard at the start to accept a new place with unfamiliar people. Be open-minded and tolerant. Enjoy your life before year 11 and prepare to study hard in the last year. Surprisingly the last year was the best year for me. I worked hard with my work mates everyday and we shared our worries and pressure. Bing

I have only one piece of advice for Chinese students, that is, get involved in activities as much as possible.

As a MUFY student, most of your classmates and friends would be Chinese, so you have to make more effort to make friends from other countries and to improve your English. After all, this is your aim when going abroad. Pay attention to the Student Bulletin. You will miss so much valuable information about activities if you don’t read it. Simon

Study hard and enjoy your life while you can. Gabriel

Make more friends and speak English more often. Lena

Learn to speak English properly. Jodie

Don’t annoy any teachers because they may see you again in year 11. Michael

Spend your free time hanging out in year 10 because you won’t have any free time in year 11. Hao

Don’t be noisy in the corridor! Don’t get so stressed before SACs, otherwise, you’ll end up doing worse. Do your homework everyday to avoid a mountain of things at the end of the term/year. Plan what you want to do, otherwise you’ll end up doing nothing. Join the SRC, do things and connect with people. Last but not least, have fun!! Katie

BEST LOOKING COUPLE: VANESS AND ANDY WITH TONY CRANSHAW

BEST DRESSED: CAMILLE AND CARSON WITH TONY CRANSHAW

BEST BALLROOM DANCING COUPLE: SIMON AND RITA

BEST ALL ROUND DANCER: WENDY AND LEO

Magic happened at the Hollywood Ball on the evening of August 6. Gorgeous guests, absolutely beautiful and handsomely attired arrived with excitement and stars in their eyes.

Waiters served us with canapés and drinks in the beautiful reception room and, the staff decked in black and white standing in a row, greeted us at the top of the awesome, winding staircase that opened out to the Grand Ballroom.

Katie, Min and Mr Ken George opened the evening. Two lucky ticket numbers were drawn, one prize, being a Golden Ticket pass for a week in the staff lift.

During the sumptuous dinner, Alvina and Carolyn performed a seductive Modern Belly Dance. Then the guests enjoyed ballroom dancing with the Waltz and the Cha Cha – a wonderful sight! Suddenly, the mood was transformed to wild, nightclub music with fog drifting through the

flashing lights. There were squeals of excitement from dancers jumping and waving their arms in the air.

The votes for the Hollywood Awards Stars went to:

Best Ballroom Dancers – Rita and Simon Best All Round Dancers – Wendy and Leo Best Looking Couple – Vaness and Andy Best Dressed – Camielle and Carson Best Dressed Staff – Maggie Brown in her spectacular glittering pink ball gown as Pretty Woman.

We even had a polar bear – Andrew Little, and the Elvin, Arwin from Lord of the Rings with her cute, pointy ears – Barbara Williams.

The caricature artists, photographers and DJ worked enthusiastically and tirelessly all through the night. Many left the happy, memorable evening wanting another party.
