'To ay 's (Jame Balbeggie's last visit to the Canniepairt was in 1990 when they lost 2- 5 in a Tayside Division 2 game . Only Spalding, n.Reilly and Paterson from Tayport's team that day will be in contention for a place this afternoon.
The clubs have had greatly=ntrasting fortunes since that last meet i ng here but that wi 11 all be forgotten as the two sides nm out intent on winning a place in the 3rd round of the OVD cup . The bookies wi 11 make Tayport clear favourites, hut wasn't that just the case against Bankfoot the other week? Two weeks after we were being eliminated from the Perthshire Advertiser cup on penalties by Bankfoot, Balbeggie were being denied a win over that same Bankfoot team by a late penalty kick miss by Mark Hamilton in a 0-0 draw in a league divis i on two match.
Jt ' s a strange game, football, and you can never be just sure how things are going to work out . Ralbeggie's recent good run will have given them a degree of confidence but it's unli~ely that we'll see the Perthshire team adopting a cavalier approach. An approach more i n line with that of Bankfoot is a better bet!
Balbeggie will have to draw on all theirdefenders' experience to halt a Tayport attack that has netted twelve times in three games on the Canniepairt since that Bankfoot debacle. If Tayport can turn on the style that delighted their support at Downfield last week, then that same support will spill into the street at 3 . 45pm with a spring in their step.
Trip To Arbroath In Centenary Cup
The draw for Cup was made at Arbroath.
the 2nd round of the Dundee North End Centenary earlier this week and pairs us with Arbroath Vies
~he rest of the draw is: Forfar Albion; Oownfield Kirrie Thistle; Bankfoot Lochee United v Broughty
North End v Violet; Blairgowrie v v Jeanfield Swifts; Balbeggie v v Luncarty; St Joseph's v Elmwood; Athletic.
Armadale Thistle, our OVD Cup victors last season, are selling their town centre ground, Volunteer Park, for £500,000 to a developer who plans to build a supermarket on the site.
However, the cash has already been spoken for. They intend to build a new stadium with 1,000 seater stand just across the road from their present ground. The cost of the new stadium is estimated to be £1,000,000.
Also set to move are Luncarty. Nothing as ambitious for them, however, with £30,000 the cost of developing a field next to their social club.

TIME TO TAKE ACTION, GENTLEMEN
On 29th Oc t o ber In the Courier's Junior Football notes, the headline wa s 'Trophy North End would lov e to win ' and the foll o wing a rticle devoted 10 paragraphs and 7 column inches t o the Sco ne Thi s tle v North End North End Cent e nary Cup tie at Scon e . Fa i r enough , Scone boasted an unbeaten record and North End ' s Social Club put u p the p res t ig i ous Tr ophy, second only t o the OVD Scottish Cu p In i mportance.
So , having read the artic l e your a verage j u nior punte r decides to check out the Sporting Post that evening for the outco me . No t a bleedln ' cheep. No repo r t not even a result . Should we be surprised? I doubt It. Scone n ever see m to b o the r their backside about phoning in the sco r e, n ever mind a repo r t. O.K. , we've moaned about t h e li ke s of Scone before who can't manage to get to a phone an hour after a g ame , hut it's time the Tayside Junio r officials stopped the pussyfooting with the likes of Scone . We all r e l y on s ponsorship, clubs and the League and the attitude of cl ub s such as Scone do us no favou r s at all. We should all be doing our best to pro mote the Tayside game fo r the benefit of all .
So, ~o me on gentle me n , If eve r y club carried on in the manner of the few , there wou l d be plenty to say, what about sorting out t h ose cl u bs which continually cock a snook at your go o dsel v es d es pite pr ob ably bein g tbld at e v ery meeting to toe the line.

CJ'oday 's Visitors RALBEGGIE are one of the Cinderella clubs of the Tayside Juniors but when it co mes down to determination to survive, they have few peers. In t h eir twenty years of existence, they have known their share of heartbreak b u t, when success does co me along, it tastes that much sweeter.
Balbeggie a r e in the midst of one of their best runs, in terms of results, f or so me time. Only one defeat in their past six ga mes and on l y f o ur goals conceded in that time.
In charge of the show at Redfield Park are co-managers Derek Hamilton and Sandy Smith . Both have a great wealth of experience in the Game. Derek had spells Senior with Dundee United and Forfar Athletic and was a member of a Jeanfield side which collected all t h e local hono u rs. s anoy , os well as serving Bankfoot , was a s t a l wa r t at St Johnstone under the legendary Willie Ormond. Accompanying the m on the bench is physio, west-coaster Billy Killin .
last line of defence for Balbe<Jgie today will be GQRIX)N 1-k::If'lfOSH who kept goal for Scone and Bankfoot before joi ning his present club two seasons ago. RILLY BEATSON (fu ll -back) was with St Johnstone in the l 'l70' s but has been with Balbe\mie for the past four or five seasons. Those of you old enough will recall the chart topping band The New Seekers. Their si~ger, F.ve Graham, is Billy's sister.
r.entral defender CRAIG JEMPSON was signed from Guilcltmm Amateurs. His performances this season have been attractin\J the Senior scouts. Also in central defence is PAUL JOHNSTON. Signed a couple of years ago from Bankfoot and h ,s also seen service at Scone Thistle.
In the sweeper role will likely be GRANT FORBES. Barney's been around t he Junior game and for many years was a stalwa r t with the now defun c t Perth Celtic . Another who turned out with Perth Celts was full-back BRIAN TAYLOR. '!'his is hi s thircl spell at Balbeggie, having also been with Bankfoot and Luncarty. Was with Celtic as a youngster. JOHN SMJTH is brother of co-manger Sandy. Plays in defence and was signed from Arbroath Vies, with whom he was mana9er, two seasons ago. A signin\J towards the end of last season was BILLY SHEARER. Rilly is another who has clone the rounds of several Junior sides includin9 Scone and Forfar Albion.
/\nother youngster who is catching the eye of the Seniors is defender BARRY MONIE who was fixed up from Crieff amateur football. ALASTAIR SINClAIR or Shuggie as he's better known, is a midfielder in his second spell with the club having been at Kinnoull and Bankfoot. FRASER DOIG (midfield) not ~d one of the four goals against ElmWood last week . Yet another vho is in his second spell at Redfield having been 11ith Bankfoot. A lot of similarities with MIKE JACKSON. He netted last week, played with Bankfoot and is on his second tour of duty with the club. AlAN Mc:INTYRE(midfield) si(J'1ed from Crieff amat, eur foct½i,11 and cu.cr.:ntly enjoyin9 his thi nl spell with the club.
lip front MARK HAMTLTON,son of co-mana9er Derek, will be one to watch . A regular scorer, he had a short period at Forfar Athletic. 'T'hird season at Redfield. Another r~Jular marksman is the bi\J veteran st,riker GEORGE BROWNING. Been with several Junior sides in Tays ide and Fife and is yet another in his second spell at the club. (must be something about Balbe\J\Jie that makes all their players want to return).
DAVIE MILLAR was formerly with Scone and Kinnoull but before and bet1' een was with his present club. Scored th e open incJ 9oal v Elm11ood las week. STEVIE GORDON was signed from amateur football last year and is one of the few Balbe\J\Jans in his first spell at the club!

rrhe <Baksr's <Bit J'd like firstly to welcome our Scottish Cup opponents Balbeggie to the Canniepairt.
Tt was great to see the Port Support out in numbers last week at Downfield. I hope that you enjoyed our victory. To be honest it's been a long time coming. Apart from our P .A. r.up performance there last season, J can't really recall a game where our outfield play didn't deserve more than it actually got, hut last Saturday, the 3-0 victory was very satisfying
However I felt that we didn't really start particularly well, hut as the game progressed we got stronger and after we took the lead there was a spell when we touched on the standards for which I'm looking. Once again the interval seemed to cool the attitude and really I was disappointed with the twenty or so minutes after the break. T knew that we were never in any trouble but we like to set high standards at this club and our players know this and must push each other and demand from each other just that.
The second goal was a real bonus and a killer for Downfield. Our third goal really delighted me and I'm sure Mel Irons as well because Steven Stewart's goal was the end product of a training g r ound set-piece on wh ich he's wo(k.ed . from time to time with the players. A good two points for Tayport.
Tt really hasn't been a bad last three weeks with a 4-0 win over Forth followed by a good 3-0 win over Montrose and we also managed to slip in a wee 4-0 friendly win in between at the Gussie . Added to the Downfield score, I reckon that's 14 n.n. - not bad. Mind you, they've got a long way to go to catch my 30 odd or was it 40 odd n.n. which destroyed the Rotary Club bowling a couple of months back!
Seriously, though, we must build on these past three weeks. We"re obviously going in the right direction. There's a lot more in the tank. A lot more work to be done on and off the training ground, but we're on the right road.
~oday's Scottish Cup opponents Balbeggie come here to block that road. T put it to our players this afternoon 'clear the way. Get our club into the3rd round draw. Focus on the job ahead . Don't drop your standards, increase them. no so and we'll have no problems.'
Support The Port, nave Baikie .

Competing without the throw-in
report on the revolutionary kick-in being tested out in Belgium
THE Sunday afternoon rain had stopped and a rainbow curved in the sky above the Beerschot football ground in Antwerp .
There were unusual things happening on the field too. Every time the ball went out of play in the Belgian second division match, the players were allowed to break the precedent of a century by kicking the ball back into play instead of taking a throw-in .
Every minute or two, a rustle ran through the crowded tribunes as supporters discussed the so-called kickin, which generally meant a long ball and an additional opportunity to score .
The Belgian second division, a tough professional league concentrated in Flemish factory towns, has been chosen -by soccer's world governing body, Fifa, as the principal testing ground for the controvers ial rule change. It has also been implemented in minor leagues in England and Hungary.
When the kick-in was devised by Fifa, its proponents said that it would speed up play and force teams to attack rather than fall into a defensive shell. So far in Belgium, the experiment has certain ly provided more excitement for goalkeepers and spectators alike, but as a set piece it seems to take as much time as the old throw-in .
Beerschot, based near Antwerp's busy port area, have no complaints.
• The side rides easily at the top of the division, four points clear of Genk and has conceded only four goals ~ eleven matches while scoring 23.
One of the first goals of the season came from a kick-in, a header by the Polish centre forward Krysztof Stephanski.
"The new rule has made a differ ence, but perhaps not as much as we thought it would," said the Beerschot
head coach, Rene Desaeyere, smiling after a recent 6-0 romp over St Niklaas. "The opposition now have to cover our centre forward 50 yards away from the ball. It opens the defence and creates more space, and that's the idea of football, creating space."
Another person who can't have any comp laints is the Beerschot keeper, Pierre Drouguet, a 32-year-o ld from Verviers. He went the first 804 minutes of the season without allowing a ball to sully his net, and when the first goal did come it was from a penalty kick towards the end of the ninth game.
Still, he acknowledges that the kick-in has introduced a new element of danger into an already dangerous profession.
"If the ball is close you have to be very aware of what is happening," he said . "It can arrive with short passes or can come right in front of goal. Before, with the throw-in, you knew it could never reach the goal." Drouguet spent two years at KV Mechelen as back-up to Miche l Preud'homme, the Belgian international now at Benfica , so he knows a bit about world-class keeping.
"The first match with the new rule was very hard," he said. "It looked so strange. For the first half-hour we did not know what was happening, becaus e you think there should be an offside, but of course there can't be with a kick-in . Now, I would say, it looks normal. Dangerous but normal."
Guy Goethals, a busy Beigian international referee and son of Raymond, the former Belgium and Marseilles mentor, has handled severa l seco nd division games with the new rule.
"My reaction so far is rather positive," he said. "But is it better? That is too early to say. We have to wait until we have seen a whole season."
Goethals said he did not think the rule made the game quicker, becaµse players still have to start-up from a "dea d ball" situation and wait for
attackers to spring toward the opposing goal. "But you definitely have more chances to score," Goethals said.
The one problem he noted is that the linesman on the other side of the field sometimes has trouble telling if · a decision near the touchline is a free kick, for which offside counts, or a kick-in, when it doesn't.
Teams treat the kick-in exactly as they would a corner, putting the tallest players around the goal for a header.
"At the beginning of the season I was worried that everyone would play it long, which is not much fun," said Beerschot 's Desaeyere. "But they haven 't. Usually you have the option to play long or short."
Belgian football is largely defensive, so the new rule is a welcome innovation for those ·who like a bit more action. Guido de Windt, of the Belgian Football Federation , which is in the midst of its 100th anniversary celebrations, says the kick-in would be a blessing to tall , aggresive players .
So far it appears that second division scoring and attendance is up since the introduction of the new rule , but that could be the influence of good weather rather than more attacks. The adoption of the English system of awarding three points for a victory has also . clearly led to a more attacking style.
Sepp Blatter, general secretary of Fifa, is to go to Belgium soon to evaluate the new rule . All teams using it will be asked to answer a questionnaire in December, when the experiment will have been in force for six months .
Almost all fans appear to like the new rule. Camie! Cop, former secretary of the Beerschot club, has supported the club since 1936 when he was 11 years old and has seen most of its home games since. "The kick-in is an extra privilege for an attacking team," he said. "'If a team is offensiveminded it will favour them, and that · is the way it should be."

r' Sniffing )I6out Witli CJ'lie Snout OVD SCOTTISH Junior Cup holders largs Thistle are in hot water following an article , 'Which appeared in their Match Progranme and which was later reproduced in a local newspaper down Ayrshire way. 'l'he article apparently ripped into the SJFA claiming that the clubs lost out when the cup spoils were distributed, with the SJFA retaining £30,000 . 'l'he SJFA replied that largs had received around £13,000, although largs had claimed their cup wj n was 'uot a bonanza ' .
'.l'he SJFA were, to say the least, not chuffed . largs have been ordered to appear to explain their conrnents. r.ooments from the SJFA Comnittee on largs'claims included 'despicable, impertinent' and 'verging on libellous'. One SJFA Caimi ttee Member even went as far as to say 'largs should be reminded that we could go on playing with 166 clubs just as easily as 167'.
NO news at the tirre of going to press on a successor to les Barr at St.,loseph's. Willie Brown has been handed the caretaker role but the two results since les' depa rture haven't exactly been earthshattering so an appointment will be a priority. One of the names Snout has heard being bandied about is that of Jim Leishman, currently in charge at Rosyth Recreation.
STIU , on managers. Steve Jackson has left North End to take up a position as Youth Coach wi 1:h Forfar Athletic at Station Park. n is understood that North End aren't to seek a replacement. 'T'he committee are happy to leave team affairs in the hands of John Markie and Ian Cook who worked with Steve at North End Park.
THE Canniepairt hosted its biggest crowd of the season to date last Saturday evening when the club staged its annual Guy Fawkes Bonfire and Firework Display. Despite the poor weather, it was a spectacular display. The fireworks carre from a different supplier this year following a tip off from the Chester Le Street TO'Wll FC committee durin g our pre-season tour. It was a worthwhile tip, the consensus of opinion being that the firework show was better than in previous years.
EX- Forfar Athletic, Raith Rovers and Kirrie Thistle centre half Alex Brash, now playing amateur with NCR fell foul of the beaks at a recent disciplinary meeting of the Midlands AFA, receiving a six month ban from football. Feeling a sense of injustice the veteran defender has appealed a9ainst the sentence to the SAFA. Arave lad! llpart from the appeal fee, t.he loss of the case could mean paying the meeting expenses, which can run into three figures, nn extension of the present ban or both.
LAST Saturday's Downfield F.C. Match Progranme launched a bitter attack on Elgin City manager Ian Fleming following the transfer of John Young from Elgin to St Joseph's earlier that week. Young had moved to Elgin in the close season from Downfield for a reputed .£4,500 fee and the Spiders thought that they had an agreement whereby they would get first refusal if the player wanted to return south. Not so. '!'he article stated that Downfield felt they " . ... vere not treated fairly by Mr -Flemi~J who broke the agreement . .. . . Fleming's conrnents [in response . to Downfield c;uerying the situation) will be taken with the contempt they deserve and he [Fleming) is no longer welcome at Downfield Park."
