SeniorNews LineAnyone who’s been in the hospital can remember the feeling of unreality that comes from the noises and sleep interruptions in that environment, not to mention feeling unwell. And going home doesn’t automatically make everything fine again: Many seniors experience loss of memory, confusion and cognitive problems when they’re discharged from the hospital. The National Institute of Aging commissioned a study on this phenomenon, and it was completed by the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Two hundred seniors age 70-plus who had no previous cognitive or dementia issues were given a Mini-Mental Status Examination upon release from the hospital. This 30-question test only takes a few minutes to administer, and checks for things such as orientation to time and place, calculation, attention and recall. The patient is asked to repeat three words, tell time, know the day of the week, spell a word backward and copy a figure with pencil and paper.Nearly one-third of those senior patients being released from the hospital had low cognition scores. This means

that seniors coming out of the hospital might not understand the instructions they’re given for medications and self-care.Tested again one month later, their scores had risen considerably for things like reading, writing, calculations and comprehension. One conclusion of the study was that “patient self-management” training — teaching the patient about his or her medications and care — should be handled later rather than at the time the patient is being sent home. Another conclusion was that doctors and family (and I’d add “friends”) need to step up, be aware of the phenomenon and give assistance — or at least arrange for it.

homes…the list of what these ladies do is very, VERY long. And for the most part the costs come out of their own pockets. Ask why they do it, and they’ll tell you it’s an act of love and gratitude for our military. What touches my heart is that since Sept. 11, 2001, these ladies have stood on a corner in Freeport, Maine, each Tuesday morning without fail. Wind, rain, snow, blistering heat (yes, even in Maine), they’ve been out there with their flags, reminding us — and honoring those who serve. Now, with the upcoming 10th anniversary of 9-11, the ladies are going hold a three-day special event. To pull this off, they’re hoping to get $1.00 from each of 30,000 people to be able to pay for it. For all they do, I think we can do better than one dollar each, don’t you?

Without FailI’ve written here before about the Freeport Flag Ladies. Perhaps you’ve visited their website [www.freeportflagladies.com] and looked at the long list of things they do for our service personnel in harm’s way. The ladies have hosted on their website thousands of photos taken when they meet with troops who have a stopover at the airport in Bangor, Maine. I don’t have to tell you what it means to family members to have those last-minute photos, the final steps on U.S. soil, before the troops fly to hostile areas. The ladies make sure each one gets a special handmade lucky penny card, a smile and a hug. They hold fundraisers; send weekly cards and care packages, with special ones going to the combat hospitals; make visits to veterans

Good luck.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A recent and much-appreciated change in the workplace inspires you to make some changes in your personal life as well. MAY BABIES (continued):stepfather, a U.S. Air Force officer, was stationed there, as was Presley, and a young Air Force recruit introduced the pair. Elvis returned to the states the following spring but stayed in contact with Priscilla via phone for the next two years. When she turned 21, he married her at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas. Six and a half years later, they were divorced.H You may remember South African runner Zola Budd who, at age 17, broke the women’s 5000 meter world record. She was especially noted for the fact that she ran barefoot. While competing at the 1984 Olympics in the 3000-meter race, Budd had three collisions with U.S. runner Mary Decker, with Decker falling, injuring her hip and withdrawing from the race. An international athletic jury found Budd innocent of any wrongdoing in the incident.H Not too many music fans are familiar with the name Eithne Patricia Ní Bhraonáin, but millions have heard the music of Enya. Enya Brennan is an Anglicized approximation of how this Irish singer’s name is pronounced in her native Donegal dialect. As of 2009, her album sales stood at over 70 million. This multi-talented musician performs all the instruments and vocals in the majority of her songs and has sung in 10 different languages in her recordings. Her vocals are layered up to 80 times during recording to achieve her distinctive sound. If you’ve seen the movie “Fellowship of the Ring,” you’ve heard her composition “May It Be,” the film’s theme, a song for which she received an Oscar nomination. She is Ireland’s second-biggest

H Who hasn’t heard Bing Crosby croon “White Christmas” in his distinctive bass-baritone voice? Born in May, 1903, Crosby was a descendant of Mayflower passenger and Pilgrim spiritual leader William Brewster. At age six, Harry Lillis Crosby became a fan of “The Bingville Bugle,” a column in the Sunday edition of Spokane, Washington’s Spokesman-Review. A 15-year-old neighbor and fellow fan began calling him Bing and the nickname stuck. Crosby had his first No. 1 hit at age 25. His success continued as 10 of 1931’s top 50 songs featured his voice, either solo or with others. He made 1,700 recordings, and 383 made the Top 30, and 41 were No. 1 on the charts. Selling Your homeMany potential sellers are sitting out the real-estate market and waiting for prices to rise again. But if you need to sell now, there are ways to get the most money for your home.First, don’t try to sell it yourself. An agent or broker will have tools that aren’t available to you: Multiple Listing Service, contacts with other agents, knowledge of the area, pricing comparisons (known as “comps”) and more.At the same time, you’ll need a savvy agent, and it’s up to you to ask questions before you sign with one. The little things can add up: Will the agent hold an open house? Will the agent put your house on the weekly “caravan” where other agents tour your property? Will potential buyers be financially pre-screened? Does the agent have contacts with mortgage lenders to be able to link up with pre-approved buyers who are just beginning to look? What is the marketing plan for your property? On which online sites will your home be listed? There are some steps you can take to have your house looking its best. Here are some recommendations:• Have a home inspection done in advance so there are no surprises during negotiations with a buyer. Either have those things fixed or be prepared to take a lower price. As a general rule, a buyer wants a place to move into, not move into and fix.• De-clutter. Throw out or store elsewhere items that make your home look smaller than it is. Take personal photos off the wall. Clear out closets so it looks like there’s plenty of space. (If you’re not sure if you’ve de-cluttered enough, take photos and study them. That’s how the space will look in sale flyers. If there is still too much stuff, move it out.) Ask a friend for an unbiased opinion.• Clean. If necessary, hire a professional service to clean floors and appliances.• Paint. A neutral color is more pleasing to a wider number of potential buyers.• Have the yard manicured and keep it mowed and trimmed at all times. Invest in pots of colorful flowers.• Make sure there are enough lamps in each room to make the space seem bright and open. Leave open the drapes for more natural light when the house is being shown. Finally, don’t make any expensive changes unless your agent suggests it might be necessary.

musical artist. H If Enya is No. 2 in Ireland, who’s number one? That honor belongs to another May baby, Paul David Hewson, better known as Bono. Rolling Stone has ranked him as the 32nd greatest singer of all time, and his band U2 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Back in 1978, while still in high school, Hewson answered a note on the school bulletin board seeking musicians for a rock band that was written by drummer Larry Mullin, and U2 was born. As to why he is rarely seen without sunglasses, Bono states that his eyes are very sensitive to light and swell up and turn red. But that’s not the whole story. In his words: “It’s part vanity, it’s part privacy and part sensitivity.”

Pet Pointers by Dr. KirK Dixon

The flea is one of the most pesky parasites we have to deal with. There are two primary health problems they are responsible for in pets. They are tapeworms and flea allergic dermatitis. Tapeworms are long flat worms that can be up to almost 3 feet in length. Once they reach their target length, segments break off the end of the worm and they are passed out in the feces of the animal. Each segment is about 1/4 inch long and resembles a grain of rice (that is moving). The segments dry up to resemble a sesame seed at which time they break open. A flea larvae then eats the egg and when the larvae grows to become an adult flea it is carrying tapeworms. When an animal swallows that infested flea, three weeks later he/she will have a tapeworm and the cycle continues. Flea allergic

dermatitis is actually a sensitivity to the saliva of the flea. When the flea bites the animal, the sensitivity to the saliva sets off a chain reaction that causes the animal to itch. They start scratching, damaging the skin and thus causing more itching. I have patients that will scratch until they are bald and bleeding. In cats, fleas like it the most around the head. In dogs, fleas like it the most around the base of the tail. In dark colored animals they are hard to see because they move so fast. I look for “flea dirt” which are little black specks which are their excrement. If you are not sure if it is real dirt or flea dirt take the specks and put them on a piece of damp white paper. Flea dirt will turn to blood specks in a minute or so. Next time we will discuss how to control fleas.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: A recent blood check showed that my potassium was high. I was told to stop eating bananas and drinking orange juice. I also was told to return to the doctor’s office the next week. I did. They took another blood sample. They told me nothing more. What happens when potassium is high? — F.H.ANSWER: Potassium has many important jobs. It keeps the body’s electrical charges balanced. It’s involved in transmitting nerve signals. It’s needed to keep the heart beating and muscles contracting. It takes part in keeping the body neither too acid nor too alkaline. High blood potassium raises blood sugar, weakens muscles, causes nausea and vomiting, and triggers erratic and dangerous heartbeats. When the level is very high, potassium paralysis and death occur. Your potassium must

not have been all that high. You had no symptoms. The causes of a high blood level include kidney illnesses, nonworking adrenal glands, a lack of insulin, sudden death of body cells, overuse of potassium supplements and medicines like beta blockers. The blood level of potassium can be read erroneously as high when the patient, during blood collection, keeps clenching and unclenching arm muscles. It rises when blood cells break apart in their journey from a patient’s arm to the laboratory. It could be your reading was high because of either of these situations. It’s hard to come up with an explanation that indicts an illness with raising potassium on one occasion and not keeping it raised for a short while. The electrolytes — sodium, potassium, bicarbonate and chloride — are not well understood by most people. Yet they are responsible for many body ailments. Readers can read about these minerals in the booklet describing their function. Write to Dr. Donohue — No. 202W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. nothing worked. I saw a gastroenterologist, who put a scope down my swallowing tube. He discovered that there was a constricting ring of tissue at the bottom of it. How did I get it? He opened it with a balloon. Can it come back? — C.W. ANSWER: You’re talking about a Schatzki (SHOT-ski) ring. It is as you say — a fold of tissue encircling the lowermost part of the esophagus, and it does cause food to hang up there. How did you get it? Some theorize that reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus explains why it developed. Acid reflux is a fancy way of saying heartburn. However, people can have reflux and a Schatzki ring but not have any heartburn symptoms. Meat and large pieces of bread are the foods most likely to get stuck.Stretching the ring with a balloon or other device usually fixes the problem. However, it can come back, and it often does. Because recurrence is common, many doctors put their patients on medicines that suppress stomach acid production.

Most hands played by declarer fit into a pattern he has encountered many times before. Because of this, many declarers tend to treat similar situations in similar fashion, which is not always the healthiest approach to the play of a hand.Consider this deal where West led the queen of clubs against four hearts. East followed with the jack, and West shifted to the nine of spades. Declarer played low from dummy, losing to the king, and East returned a low trump. At this point, South put on his thinking cap. Had he finessed, which seems the natural thing to do, he would have gone down one. But South was not a player who relied solely on past experience. He realized that finessing the heart return would be the proper play in most hands, but he also realized that it would be the wrong play in this hand. So he went up with the ace, felling the king, played the ace and another diamond, and wound up making 10 tricks after ruffing two of dummy’s diamonds in his hand. There is no denying that South was lucky to find West with the singleton king of hearts. But good luck is frequently a byproduct of good dummy play, so South was entitled to some measure of glory in nabbing the singleton king.Declarer realized at trick three, after East had shown up with the jack of clubs and king of spades, that East could not also have the king of hearts. Had East held that card, he surely would not have passed his partner’s opening bid.So, after concluding that West had to have the king of hearts, South went up with the ace — not because he expected to drop the king, but because he recognized that his only chance was to find the king unguarded.

H Little did Ken Jennings know when he stepped onto the set of the game show “Jeopardy!” on June 2, 2004, that he would be appearing in 75 episodes and set a record for the longest winning streak on the popular program. During his tenure as champion, the Utah software engineer earned $2,520,700, plus $2,000 for second place on the day of his defeat and another $500,000 prize during the program’s Ultimate Tournament of Champions. Barbara Walters featured Jennings on her 2004 ABC News Special “The Ten Most Fascinating People of 2004.” In addition, Jennings chronicled his success in a 2006 book “Brainiac: Adventures in the Curious, Competitive, Compulsive World of Trivia Buffs.”H At age 24, Tina Fey became a writer at NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” and by 29, she was the head writer. The next year she joined the cast, where she remained six years until 2006. She is the creator of the TV series “30 Rock” and is the winner of seven Emmy Awards and three Golden Globes. Her daughter was born in 2005, and she returned to work just one month later, saying,

MAYS AND BERRATwo of Major League Baseball’s greats claim May as their birth month.

Willie Mays turns 80 this month, and Yogi Berra will celebrate his 86th birthday. Let’s take a short look at each of their lives and careers.

e The professional baseball career of Willie Mays, the “Say Hey Kid,” began while he was still in high school. He started playing on Tennessee’s minor league Chattanooga Choo-Choos during his summer break in 1947. After a stint in the Negro American League, he joined the New York Giants’ Class B team in 1950. He missed 266 games when he was drafted during the Korean War but was back in the game for the 1954 season. The Giants moved to San Francisco in 1958. e Many consider Mays to be the greatest all-around player of all time. He played in 24 All-Star games and had a lifetime batting average of .302. He ranks fourth on the list of career home runs with 660 and had 3,283 hits. During two seasons, he blasted 50 or more home runs, and he was named “Player of the Decade” for the 1960s. e One of Mays’ best friends on the Giants was right fielder Bobby Bonds. When Bobby’s son Barry was born in 1964, Mays was asked to be his godfather, and he has remained close to the younger slugger his entire life. (Bobby himself was no slouch in the home run department, having hit 332 during his career.) e After 17 years with the Giants, Mays was traded to the New York Mets at age 41. The Giants were in financial trouble, and Mays couldn’t be guaranteed an income after he retired, whereas the Mets had offered him a coaching position upon retirement.e At his induction into the Hall of Fame in 1979,

reporters asked Mays who was the best ball player he had seen over the course of his career. His reply? “I don’t mean to be bashful, but I was.” And in the words of baseball great Ted Williams, “They invented the All-Star Game for Willie Mays.” e Lawrence Peter Berra’s famous nickname Yogi has nothing to do with a bear. His friend told him he looked like a Hindu holy man, or “yogi,” because he always sat with his arms and legs crossed as he waited for his turn at bat. Berra’s parents came to America from Italy, arriving at Ellis Island in 1909 and later settling in St. Louis. e Berra lost a spot on the St. Louis Cardinals to his best friend Joe Garagiola in 1942. Instead, he played Class B ball until he entered the Navy during World War II, where he served as a Gunner’s Mate during the D-Day invasion. e Berra has been called the greatest catcher in baseball history. His career with the New York Yankees began in 1946. He played in the All-Star game 15 times, was the league’s MVP three times and appeared in 14 World Series. His lifetime batting average was .285, and he slugged 358 home runs. e Berra is noted for many memorable quotes, perhaps the most famous being, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” Other wise advice was, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” His reason as to why the Yankees lost the 1960 World Series to the Pirates was, “We made too many wrong mistakes.”

“NBC has me under contract. The baby and I only have a verbal agreement.”H Clint Eastwood turns 81 this May and seems to have no intention or retiring. He spent his early years in a series of jobs, including lifeguard, grocery clerk, forest firefighter and golf caddy. He was almost 30 before the turn in his career came along with the role of Rowdy Yates in television’s “Rawhide,” a character he would play for the next six years. After starring in a string of Western movies, he moved on to the “Dirty Harry” films. When Sean Connery left the role of James Bond, it was offered to Eastwood, but he declined, stating that Bond should be played by a British actor. Eastwood has had a lifelong love of music and the piano and has composed the music for many of his films. H The family of Henry Kissinger fled the persecution of Nazi Germany in 1938 and moved to New York when he was 15. After serving in the U.S. Army for

Kahne Takes Layover With Team Red BullThis stage of Kasey Kahne’s career is tumultuous almost by definition. What should be the prime of the 31-year-old’s

career is a bit muddled, if only for now. Kahne left Richard Petty Motorsports near the end of last season. In 2012, he will join Hendrick Motorsports, replacing Mark Martin. This year, though, Kahne is taking a one-year ride with Team Red Bull as a teammate of Brian Vickers. What’s more, Kahne underwent knee surgery recently to repair a torn meniscus. Still, he planned to participate in the next Sprint Cup race at Richmond International Raceway. Thus far, in the No. 4 Toyota, Kahne has collected three top-10 finishes, though a disastrous Talladega showing relegated him to 18th in the Sprint Cup standings. He was 11th four races ago.“We’ve been learning some things,” said Kahne. “The cars are a lot different than what we’ve had in the past ... we’ve been off every week, but ... we have a great team with Red Bull behind it.“It’s really nice to drive awesome equipment, nice cars. TRD (Toyota Racing Development) does a

good job. ... The teams came together really well, really quickly, and I think we can run pretty strong throughout this entire season.”It’s hard to believe this is actually Kahne’s eighth season in NASCAR’s premier series. In 2006, he collected six wins and finished eighth in the final standings. The most recent of Kahne’s 11 victories occurred in September 2009 at Atlanta Motor

Speedway.Understandably, Kahne prefers not to look ahead to next year, when he will join NASCAR’s premier team, Hendrick. For now, he wants to concentrate on his present status at Team Red Bull.“It’s back to kind of how it should be, I think,” he said. “I think racing should be fun. It’s a job, but it should be fun, too.“It’s nice to see all the little things they do to prepare. I think

my car is probably one of the nicest cars in that whole garage over there. ... I’m just happy to be where I’m at.”

F It’s ironic that a New York Times bestselling author would be raised by a single mother who couldn’t read or write. His father, a kitchen worker, abandoned the family when Jones was a preschooler. Growing up in poverty in Washington, D.C., he read a steady stream of comic books until he was 13, when he discovered novels. A good student, Jones spent much of his time in libraries and earned a scholarship to Massachusetts’ Holy Cross College. F Following his college graduation, Jones began writing a few short stories depicting life as he knew it in the D.C. area in the 1950s and 1960s. He was living with his terminally ill mother, and following her death, he was unemployed, suffering from depression and living in one of the city’s rescue missions. F Jones took a job as a proofreader and columnist for Tax Notes, a journal publication for tax professionals. On his days off, he continued to write. His collection of short stories about Washington was finally published in 1992, and “Lost in the City” was nominated for a National Book Award. But it was a full 10 years later before he began writing a novel in earnest.F Jones, an African-American, had a great interest in the history of slavery and began researching the subject. It especially fascinated him that there were free blacks who became slave owners during the time

of the Civil War. He started a short story about it during his Tax Notes employment, but it was shelved for years, although he continued to ponder the idea. F In 2002, the staff at the tax journal was reduced, and after 19 years there, Jones was fired. He dug out the 12 pages of the slavery story he had begun and set a goal of writing five pages per day. With only a small savings account, two months’ severance pay and a plan, he started putting on paper the plot he had been pondering for a decade. It took him just two-and-a-half months to complete it. He entitled it “The Known World” and dedicated it to his late mother. F In “The Known World,” published in 2003, Jones penned the story of a former Virginia slave who purchased freedom and became the owner of 33 slaves and landowner of 50 acres. The novel was declared the winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for fiction and became one of the choices for “The Today Show’s” Book Club series. Oprah Winfrey declared it “the best book I have read in 10 years.” F Edward Jones followed up his Pulitzer winner with a second collection of short stories, which also was nominated for various awards. Overcoming the odds, he has progressed from proofreader at Tax Notes to Pulitzer winner and an instructor of fiction writing at several universities, including George Washington University and Princeton.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS: EDWARD P. JONESIt’s hard to say where Edward P. Jones would be today if he hadn’t been fired from his

job. He devoted his “down time” to writing a novel, a decision that changed his life. Tidbits gives you a glimpse into the timeline of this award-winning author.

QUESTION: Our washing machine is pretty old, and one day when my son was doing laundry the dial made a cracking sound and came off in his hand. Right now we make do by arduously turning the small plastic collar that’s left until the wash cycle comes on. However, only one cycle, “permanent press,” works properly (goes all the way from start to finish). Is there any way to fix this, or should I start saving for a new washer? — Hannah G., Brattleboro, Vt.ANSWER: Unfortunately, I’m not sure exactly what the solution would be. If I had the make and model of the washing machine, I could look up common problems and suggested fixes for that brand. I do know that some replacement parts, like the dial, can be ordered, but if the machine is more than several years old, the part may no longer be available. The single-cycle only problem might be a problem with the wash timer, but again, it’s tough to know how to fix it. Your best option at the moment is to contact an appliance repair center with the make and model and a description of the problem. A repairman might come out to fully diagnose the issue. If so, ask for any repair estimate in writing before allowing any work to be done.

* * *QUESTION: I picked up an older washer-dryer set for a good price via an online ad. Everything works fine, except that when the clothes are done washing, they seem to have a lot of lint and stuff on them. Most of it comes off in the dryer, but it’s annoying. How can I fix it? — A Reader, via emailANSWER: Sounds like the washer could have had some kind of lint-trap attachment. Many, many years ago, some upright washers had perforated plastic attachments placed on or near the top of the basin to catch stray lint during the wash and rinse cycles. Contact the person you bought it from and ask if he or she has something like that. You may be able to order the part online as well.Incidentally, many modern washers still have lint traps. They’re located in out-of-the-way places and are designed to not need cleaning very often. Check the manufacturer’s guide to see if your new washer has a lint trap and for any instructions regarding its maintenance.HOME TIP: Keep your washing machine clean by wiping down the tub periodically with a damp cloth. Twice a year, run the washer through a full cycle with only a cup of vinegar or bleach added.

THIS IS AHAMMERTHIS IS AHAMMER

LET ‘EM INZev Chafets files a gem of a story with “Cooperstown Confidential: Heroes, Rogues, and the Inside Story of the Baseball Hall of Fame” (Bloomsbury, $15). Part memoir, part legend, part scholarly work and, in some cases, arguably libelous, Chafets goes where no other baseball writer would dare to go in peeking behind the curtain of baseball’s kingmakers.Lord knows I’ve used this blessed space on more than one occasion to assail the Baseball Writers Association of America, the baseball commissioner’s office and the moneyball-changers inside the temple of Cooperstown. For far too long and far too often, this triumvirate has treated baseball with the same sort of hypocrisy the major world religions are now accused of on a near daily basis.Yes, baseball is religion in America, as well it should be. Like all of those “pastime” clichés that end up becoming so remarkably accurate, and so much of what lends so many to either connect with it at an early age as if it were some celestially chosen calling or fall in love with it in a born again-like fervor at a later point in time, it’s what makes baseball worth revering.I believe it is a baseball writer’s job to spread the word of

the mystical deeds of the diamond with their stories, and every columnist should take the preacher’s stand with a little bit of fire and brimstone. But to play the role of St. Peter standing at the pearly gates, to make like they’re some arbiter of morality? No…not so much. We don’t even hold priests and preachers to such lofty standards anymore. But clergy also canned Latin at Catholic Mass years ago and recently allowed Matisyahu to rap a few verses of late. Maybe that’s why Chafets, himself an Israeli ex-pat who readily admits he won’t be let into the good graces of the Hall or those currently lording over the game anytime soon, feels free to burn a bush or two.Dubious politics, former players, the commissioner’s office and the Hall’s ownership philosophies form an almost almost DaVinci Code-like shroud over the story. And while most of the scandalous and scurrilous stories are nothing new to beat reporters or beaten down fans (Babe Ruth may have been of mixed-race, for instance), he spells out the math involved: the Hall translates into real money. Just ask Padre Dave Winfield or Expo Gary Carter about the commissioner’s decision to deny a inducted player the right to choose what cap they were enshrined in.“Shoeless” Joe Jackson died penniless, but not before the book relays the poignant scene of him, long since disgraced, working from behind the clerk’s counter at a liquor store and being recognized by Hall of Famer Ty Cobb. “I didn’t think you guys wanted to talk to me,” he said. Joe…we’re still talking about you now.

Q: I read somewhere that my all-time favorite band, KISS, is back in the studio working on a new album. Is that true? If so, when can we expect some new material from them? — Rodney G., via e-mailA: It’s true: KISS is working on a new studio album. The band began recording in April, and lead singer/songwriter Paul Stanley told me that they expect to release the album in late fall or early 2012, depending on how things go. He said: “So far, it sounds phenomenal. It’ll be worth the wait, I promise.”In the meantime, Paul also is working with the House Research Institute to help bring awareness to teen hearing loss. Having been born deaf in one ear as well as being a mega rock star, Paul knows all about protecting his hearing, and he wants to help spread the word any way he can. “Hearing loss affects kids, it affects teens, and it affects adults. I tell people, ‘If you won’t listen to somebody in a white coat, maybe you’ll listen to somebody in black leather.’” For more info on how you can protect your hearing, go to earbud.org and soundrules.org.

i i iQ: Will “Memphis Beat” and “Rizzoli and Isles” be back on TV? I’m already getting tired of all the summer reality shows! — Glenda F., via e-mailA: “Memphis” and “Rizzoli” will be back this summer on TNT, starting June 14 and July 11, respectively. In fact, TNT recently announced its all-new summer programming slate, which includes two new series, “Franklin and Bash” with Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer, and “Falling Skies” with Noah Wylie. Other returning series include “Men of a Certain Age”

on June 1, “HawthoRNe” on June 14, “Leverage” on June 26 and “The Closer” on July 11. So get ready for some summertime drama, because TNT is filled to the brim with it!

i i iQ: The Season 1 cliffhanger for Syfy’s “Being

Human” had me on the edge of my seat. Please tell me it has been renewed for another season — I can’t wait to see what they come up with next! — Jackie H. in MontanaA: The vampire/werewolf/ghost fantasy-drama has been renewed for a second season by the Syfy network. In fact, the Season 1 finale shattered ratings records for the network. Although no official Season 2 premiere date has been given, I would assume to look for it come January 2012.

i i iQ: I was happy to read in your column that “In Plain Sight” would be back on USA for a

fourth and fifth season, but I read that star Mary McCormack is pregnant in real life. How will they handle it on the show? — Colleen V., Las VegasA: Mary and hubby Michael Morris are expecting their third child together. Mary told People magazine that her pregnancy will be written into the show, so it will be interesting to see what this means for her character, Mary Shannon.

z It was the multitalented Pierre Beaumarchais — born in the 18th century, he was a revolutionary in both France and America as well as a watchmaker, diplomat, musician, spy, inventor, publisher and arms dealer — who made the following sage observation: “It is not necessary to understand things in order to argue about them.”z If you live in Florida, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that there are more than 3,000 different species of mosquitoes.z The experts claim that roses don’t really have thorns. Botanically speaking, thorns are considered to be modified branches and are difficult to break off the stem. What roses have are known as prickles, which are just outgrowths of the stem’s outer skin — and they are, fortunately, much easier to break off.z Statistics show that after having her first child, a woman’s driving sees a measurable improvement.z The name of the great state of Missouri comes

from a Native American word meaning “town of large canoes.”z A man named Henry Budd, before his death in 1862, directed in his will that if his sons, William and Edward, grew moustaches they would receive nothing from his estate. In further discrimination against facial hair, one Mr. Fleming, a British upholsterer, left 5 pounds in his will to each of his mustached employees, but double that to those who were clean-shaven.z Those who study such things say that the Atlantic Ocean is getting 1.2 inches wider every year.z If you enjoy apricots, be sure you don’t accidentally swallow the pits — they contain substances called cyanogenetic glycosides, which, once they reach the digestive tract, are converted to cyanide.

Thought of the Week“Half of the modern drugs could well be

thrown out of the window, except that the birds might eat them.”

— Dr. Martin Henry Fischer

Challenging The Way We Think and Live in the Coming Week

For most of us, denying self at the level that Jesus was talking about and demonstrating seems impossible for us to ever consider. I cannot remember ever talking with a person who looks forward to denying themselves to the fullest extent — Christian or not.

To deny yourself is what Jesus did in the garden of Gethsemane… “Father if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but your will be done.”

Denying yourself at this level is what Paul did when he appealed his case to Rome and his eventual death there in Acts 25:11.

It is what all of the martyrs did as they chose to die rather than deny Jesus as Lord.

Christian history is full of stories of Believers who gave their lives as this command of Jesus requires. The only reason anyone ever picked

up a cross and carried it in Jesus’ time on earth was to die on it. It was not a symbol we simply wear to church.

Christian history is not over. We are witnessing it so rapidly as to cause us dizziness. If the end is near and the days of openly living as a Believer ends, are you ready to stand firm, deny yourself for His sake even to death? Go back and reread the verse for today — “to save your life (here on earth for a while) is to lose your life for eternity.” I am not willing to risk that.

“What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?” Luke 9:25 Also read Isaiah 14:24-27

Just maybe we should allow the real life example of Jesus to challenge the way we think and live in the coming week.

Denying Myself in a Me-First GenerationBy Pastor Len Stubbs

Then He said to them all, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and daily follow me. For whoever wants to save

his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.— Luke 9:23, 24 NIV

Sterling or Plate?Q: I recently inherited a set of American flatware from the 1930s. How can I determine whether it is sterling or plate? — Susan, Athens, Ga.A: Any item with 92.5 percent silver content is considered sterling and is marked as such. Some pieces are identified as coin or pure coin, indicating that it is 90 percent silver rather than the customary 92.5 percent. By international law, silver plate can’t be marked as sterling, bear an English hallmark nor have the numerical marking of the better silver grades. Since more than 90 percent of all sterling is marked as such, the other 10 percent must be determined by an expert. One of the better references is Warman’s Sterling Silver Flatware: Value and Identification Guide by Mark F. Moran, which features more than 18,000 listings with current values. This is an essential guide to prominent silversmiths, manufacturers and patterns. It is $24.99 and available through www.krause.com.

He is a certified appraiser of autographs, manuscripts and historical documents and can help you determine values and possibly find a buyer for you.

“Kit Carson: The Life of an American Border Man”

by David Remley(University of Oklahoma Press, $24.95)

Reviewed by Larry CoxLike many characters who were involved with the settling of the American West, the myths and folklore surrounding Kit Carson are difficult to separate from the truth.Carson was born in 1809 in Madison County, Ky. He began work as a hunter and trapper, and although he excelled at both, it was his knowledge of Indian habits and languages that made him the perfect candidate to become a guide for John Fremont’s explorations in 1842.Historian David Remley, who has written extensively about the American Southwest, rehabilitates the reputation of this larger-than-life frontiersman in his new book. In recent years, Carson has been written off in popular histories as an Indian killer, responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Navajos. This black-and-white presentation shortchanges the truth.Carson was a complex man living in a complex time. According to Remley, Carson was less a mythical hero but more than boilerplate accounts that suggest he was a simpleminded rascal with a rifle. Remley builds a convincing case that Carson was dependable, ethical and — for his day — rather progressive. For example, despite the fact that he was instrumental in warfare against the Navajos triggered on behalf of Gen. James H. Carleton, Carson eventually lived peacefully among various Native American tribes — including the Utes, whom he served as an U.S. government agent. He also was happily married to an Arapaho woman. Carson tried throughout his life to find his place in a society where different races, cultures and languages met, mixed, and yes, fought — sometimes together, but almost always for the possession of home, hunting rights and honor. This well-crafted new book takes a balanced, objective look at Carson’s life and character. The result is a narrative that humanizes Carson and, perhaps for the first time, reveals the man behind the myth.
