Q: I have a Liberty Bell cookie jar that is marked with the dates 1776-1976, so I assume it was made to commemorate our country’s bicentennial. Is this something worth keeping or pass-ing along to my great-grandchildren? -- Ruth, Barre, Vt.

A: I think you are probably correct that your cookie jar was manufactured to observe the 200th anniversary of the United States. Although there are a few collectors of bicentennial items, it will take a little more time before many of the items are all that much in demand. I have spotted plates, cups, posters and, yes, cookie jars at antiques malls and in shops, but prices do not seem to be increasing all that much. My advice is to keep your cookie jar, since it will probably be more valuable in the future. How much, I can’t begin to guess.

• • •Q: I have a three-speed Capitol phonograph that my mother

purchased for me 60 years ago when I was a teenager. Capitol only made a few, and mine still is in working order and in excel-lent condition. How much is it worth? -- Aileen, Howell, Mich.

• It was French philoso-pher Jean-Paul Sartre who made the following sage observation: “Three o’clock is always too late or too ear-ly for anything you want to do.”

• Those who study such things say that of all teenag-ers who wear braces, at least 60 percent have matched the rubber bands on their brackets to their outfits.

• Mary Todd Lincoln’s half-sister, Emily Todd, was married to Confederate Gen. Benjamin Helm. When her husband died in 1863, Emily crossed Union lines to visit her sister in the White House. Newspapers in the North created a furor over in-cident, speculating that the general’s widow could be a spy. After taking an oath of loyalty to the Union, Emily Helm was granted amnesty.

• John Lennon appeared on the first cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

• Do you go to action movies just to see the car chas-es? Here’s a real-life doozy for you: In 2002, after a bank robbery in Wrestedt, Germany, the culprits led law-enforcement officials on a 620-mile chase through several countries. After two days, the criminals were fi-nally apprehended in Rivne, Ukraine.

• The original Mickey and Minnie Mouse were voiced by Wayne Allwine and Russi Taylor. The human pair also were married in real life.

• If you’re like 37 percent of Americans, you feel a sense of satisfaction when you finish vacuuming. If you’re like the rest of us, you just hope the kids wait a few hours before spilling cereal on the carpet again.

• According to historians, Roman emperor Caligula once declared war on Neptune, the god of the sea. After his soldiers ran into the ocean and stabbed at the water, Caligula declared victory and ordered the men to collect seashells as war trophies.

• On Aug. 16, 1920, Cleveland Indians shortstop Ray Chap-man is struck in the temple by a ball pitched by Carl Mays of

the New York Yankees. He died 12 hours later. Af-ter Chapman’s injury, it was mandated that scuffed or discolored balls be replaced with new white ones, making them easier to see.• On Aug. 17, 1933, New York Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig plays in his 1,308th consecutive game, breaking former Yankee Everett Scott’s record for consecutive games played. Gehrig would go on to play in 2,130 games in a row, setting a record that would stand for over half a century.• On Aug. 13, 1948, U.S. and British planes airlift a record amount of supplies into sections of Berlin under American and British control. Despite terrible

weather, crowded airspace and exhaustion of the pi-lots and crews, more than 700 British and American planes brought in nearly 5,000 tons of supplies.• On Aug. 12, 1953, less than a year after the Unit-ed States tested its first hydrogen bomb, the Sovi-ets detonate a 400-kiloton device in Kazakhstan. Known as the “Layer Cake,” the bomb was fueled by layers of uranium and lithium deuteride, a hydro-gen isotope.• On Aug. 15, 1969, the Woodstock Music Festi-val opens on a patch of farmland in White Lake, New York. By the time the gates opened, more than 400,000 people were clamoring to get in. Those without tickets simply walked through gaps in the fences, and the organizers were eventually forced to make the event free of charge.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is putting up $8 million for grants to providers of adaptive sports opportunities for disabled veterans and members of the armed forces.

A lot goes into providing events and opportunities: training, supplies, coaches, equipment, recreation therapists, program de-velopment and more, right in the veteran’s community. For more advanced athletes, there are the Paralympic and adaptive sport programs on regional and national levels. The grant money will be very welcome and might even result in additional programs being created across the country. (In addition, when training for the Paralympics, there’s a monthly training allowance.)

A few examples of upcoming events: Summer Sports Clinic in San Diego, Sept. 7- 12; Tee Tournament in Iowa City, Iowa,

Sept. 8-11; Warrior Games in Colorado Springs, Colo., Sept. 28-Oct. 4; Creative Arts Festival in Milwaukee, Oct. 27-Nov. 2.

To learn more about these events, go online to www.va.gov/adaptivesports.

If you wonder if one of the adaptive sports programs is for you (or someone you know), go to the website and click around. Look at the Mission Re-Defined video. (Warning: There is a 3-second IED explosion at the 25-second mark on the video. It passes quickly.)

To find ongoing activities and sports clubs near you, click on Search by Location and put in your ZIP code. (Don’t search by your state because I found at least one that was misfiled.) You’ll see a list of clubs along with contact information, including phone and email. Click on each entry to see which activities are offered and which disability groups are supported.

The variety of available activities is wide ranging: paddle sports, basketball, shooting, wheelchair tennis, rugby, water skiing, cross-country skiing and much more. There’s something for everyone.

Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to [email protected].

A: I spoke to several collectors, and they seem to agree that your phonograph would sell in the $75-$150 range. In your letter you also listed several other items, including dishes and guitars. Let me state again that in this column I do not make ap-praisals and take only one question at a time.

• • •Q: I have an original edition of the Stars & Stripes newspaper

announcing the end of World War II. I would like to know what it is worth. -- Estelle, Sun City, Ariz.

A: Timothy Hughes is one of the leading newspaper dealers in this country and has bought, sold and appraised vintage pub-lications for more than 30 years. His contact information is P.O. Box 3636, Williamsport, PA 17701; [email protected]; and 570-326-1045. Check out his website at www.rarenewspa-pers.com.

• • •Q: I have an Elks Jim Beam decanter from 1968. What do you

think it is worth? -- Charlie, Hobbs, N.M.A: I found the decanter on eBay. It sold at auction for $12,

which is probably close to what it is actually worth.

Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected]. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox cannot personally answer all reader questions, nor do appraisals. Do not send any materials requiring return mail.

It may sound corny, but how much do you really know about corn. Some of these facts may surprise you:• Corn is native to the Western Hemisphere• Corn outside North America, Australia, and New Zealand

means any cereal crop. Maize is a more formal and internation-ally recognized name for corn• The word corn is an English word used to describe any type of grain, but using it most people are referring to maize.• Maize is an Indian word meaning “sacred mother,” or “giver of life.”

• One bushel of corn contains about 72,800 kernels and weighs 56 pounds.• Corn is a domesticated grass• Corn does not exist in the wild• There are more than 3,500 different uses for corn, and is in all sorts of products from peanut butter to batteries.

1 lemon1/3 cup low-fat buttermilk 2 tablespoons light mayonnaise 1 tablespoon snipped fresh chives 8 ounces bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces 3 slices good-quality white bread, well-toasted1 tablespoon cider vinegar 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 head (about 8 ounces) Bibb or Boston lettuce, leaves separated3 medium heirloom tomatoes, sliced

1. From lemon, into small bowl, grate 1/2 teaspoon peel and squeeze 2 teaspoons juice. Whisk in buttermilk, mayonnaise, chives and 1/4 teaspoon salt.

2. In 12-inch nonstick skillet, cook bacon on medium 9 to 14 minutes or until browned and crisp, stirring occasionally. With slotted spoon, transfer bacon to paper-towel–lined plate.

3. Cut each slice bread into 4 triangles; transfer to medium bowl. Drizzle with 2 tablespoons bacon fat, tossing to coat. Dis-card remaining bacon fat.

4. To same skillet, add vinegar and sugar. Cook 1 minute or until sugar dissolves and mixture is slightly reduced, stirring constantly. Return bacon to skillet, tossing and stirring to coat. Remove from heat.

5. Arrange lettuce on serving platter. Top with bread and toma-toes. Sprinkle with bacon. Serve salad with dressing. Serves 4.
