projects and “day2day” orders &requirements. Local support, lo-cal time-zone, local personnel -knowledgeable in internationalproducts, standards and approv-als. A successful part of our busi-ness is our EMCU’s (Eutex Mobile

Containerised Unit), where westock “on site” electrical bulkproducts and cables, keeping itfully stocked throughout the en-tire project, virtually eliminatingshipping problems, shortages &time-frame issues.

We have seen a shift in the in-dustry in the last few years, fromconventional marketing tactics,to more web based media cam-paigns. More and more companiesare using social network plat-forms and technical articles tokeep their customers informed. We have our own marketing &

manufacturers negotiations going onbehind the scenes to ensure thatwe are always “ahead of the curve”in the IEC and Hazardous areafields. It’s a competitive world out

there and we strive to work closelywith our clients and manufactur-ers on a daily basis giving the localsupport that we strive to maintainand promote.

TCD - Are there any other recent developments that our readers should be interested in?

Data-Com and fibre optic cables inline with the growth in the Marine &Offshore sectors. Many offshore op-erators are becoming more stringentin the specifications of such cablesand we have moved to accommodatethe demand. In regard of this, we nowhold stock of co-axial, data and fibreoptic cables that comply with the rig-orous International Standards of thesemarkets.

Also, working closely with our newpartner company, ATEC Certification,it has brought to light, more than ever, the importance of training. As withthe progression towards enhancedproducts, it’s not simply enough tohave a certified product, but ratherthe individual involved in the design, engineering, and production of theequipment destined for a hazardousarea should also be certified.

LS Cable lands high voltage cable projectin South Australia

LS Cable will install the under-ground transmission cable to con-nect Torrens Island, near Adelaide, with a substation on the westernoutskirts of the city. The totallength will be about 18 kilometersand is scheduled for completion inDecember 2011. This is the biggesthigh voltage cable project in thesouthern region of Australia. Thecountry started this project in or-der to prevent emergency power-downs caused by both an increas-

ing demand for electricity in Ad-elaide and the city’s deterioratingfacilities.

In Australia and New Zealand, power cables are more than 30years old and the demand for re-placement is increasing. In thesecountries, subterranean cables arepreferred compared to the usualaerial cables requiring electricpoles because they have less effecton land owners and offer improvedsafety.

Cloudis has announced a de-velopment designed to reducethe time needed for a cableroute to be found, or problemsto be identified, on the mostcomplex networks o fcableways.

Ian Darbyshire, technical di-rector at Cloudis, said: ‘Whenthe network of cable trays, lad-ders and penetrations is cre-ated in the CAD system and thenimported to CMPIC, the com-

Cloudis development enables cable routing

pleteness and accuracy of thatnetwork is unknown.

‘Consequently, there may begaps in the network or theremay be inconsistencies in thesegregations allocated to thenetwork.

‘Therefore, when cables aresubmitted for routing there maybe no possible route for certaincables.

He added: ‘The enhance-ment that we have introduced

scans the network of trays andpenetrations, and finds discon-nected areas of the network, between which it will be impos-sible to route a cable fully.

‘Simultaneously, the analysissimplifies the network by iden-tifying any dead-end branches.

‘Having done the networkanalysis, deciding whether ornot a cable can be routed is vir-tually instantaneous.

‘Avoiding dead-end branchesreduces the number of optionsfor the autorouter, which inturn allows a route to be foundfaster.

‘As a byproduct, the routingspeed overall has also been in-creased.

ABB has announced the success-ful ‘open-line’ test for Pole 1 of the800 kV (kilovolt) UHVDC (ultrahigh-voltage direct current) Fengxian con-verter station in Shanghai, in closecooperation with State Grid Corpo-ration of China (SGCC). This test wasaccomplished in a record time of justtwo years from receiving the order,a year ahead of schedule.

The ±800 kV Xiangjiaba-Shang-hai HVDC link will transmit 6,400

ABB sets record with ultrahigh-voltage powerproject in ChinaMW of power from the Xiangjiabahydropower plant, located in thesouthwest of China, to Shanghai,China’s leading industrial and com-mercial center, located over 2,000kilometers away.

The transmission system, willset a new benchmark in terms ofvoltage levels and transmissioncapacity. The record is presentlyheld by the 600 kV Itaipu transmis-sion line in Brazil, also deliveredby ABB. The efficiency of theXiangjiaba-Shanghai transmissionline will be more than 93 percent, with transmission losses being re-stricted to under 7 per cent. Thiswould enable power supply for an

additional 1 million people in Chinaevery year as compared with the500 kV HVDC systems in use there.

ABB’s scope of delivery includesfourteen 400 kV converter trans-formers and fourteen 800 kV con-verter transformers, of which tenwill be delivered from Sweden andthe rest manufactured locally inpartnership with TBEA in Shenyang, with ABB components and technol-ogy. Other key products includethyristor valves, DC (direct current)switchyard equipment, measuringequipment for the AC (alternatingcurrent) switchyard and the newlydeveloped DCC800 HVDC controlsystem.

AlumiFuel Power, Inc. has an-nounced that it has taken delivery ofits first production unit hydrogen gen-erator, the PBIS-1000. API also an-nounced that, with the help of its lo-cal manufacturing partner, Apex Pip-ing Systems (see API news release ofSeptember 28, 2009), its productionline is fully ready for mass productionof its hydrogen generators. The designand construction of this third genera-tion of the PBIS-1000 incorporates sig-nificant feedback from customers, andcustomer deliveries are expected tobegin in early 2010.

API’s PBIS-1000 relies on the robustchemical reaction among aluminium, water, and proprietary additives. Op-eration of the generator is simple: two32-oz. “aluminium can” cartridgescontaining aluminium powder and theproprietary additives are loaded intothe reactor vessels. Water from prac-tically any source, including salt orbrackish water, is poured into the wa-ter tank, and a hand pump is then usedto inject water into the cartridges, generating 1,000 litres of hydrogen in20 minutes.

While API’s hydrogen generator was

AlumiFuel Power announces deliveryof production hydrogen generator

initially designed for the remote in-flation of weather balloons (hence itsname, Portable Balloon Inflation Sys-tem), the quality of hydrogen the re-actor generates is easily adaptable tofuel cells and many other systems re-quiring remote/portable hydrogen.Currently, large, heavy and hard-to-handle steel “K-Cylinders” under veryhigh pressures are used to transportand deliver hydrogen to customers. The PBIS unit instead relies on smallunpressurized cartridges of aluminumpowder and any available watersource. This greatly reduces the costand danger of transporting hydrogen, and makes hydrogen available to pre-viously inaccessible locations.

Unlike expensive electrolysis sys-tems, API’s generator does not needan external power source, and unlikesteam reformers, API’s generator cre-ates no greenhouse gases. Further-more, all the chemicals used in thereaction are non-toxic and can be re-cycled or discarded in municipaldumps. API’s hydrogen generator ismore mobile and considerably lessexpensive than any other system onthe market.
