The global innovation landscape

• Increasing globalisation of science and technology

• Challenges have no boundaries‐ Organisational, discipline, cultural, geographic‐ Complex & interconnected‐ Require cross-organisational & cross-disciplinary

collaboration‐ Require global standing and scale

Global Precincts

Defined geographic locationsof capabilities that open uppossibilities for social contact and collaboration

Proximity is important, but it is more than physical

Talent is the single most important factor

Science is not the only player

Page 21: TCIOceania14 CSIRO: Global precincts

1. People are critical – Without the best people you can’t attract the partners and funding needed

to solve the big challenges.

2. The right people are critical– They need to be champions of collaboration– They need to be in the right disciplines and in the right geographical places

3. Collaboration and sharing at and across multiple levels– Researcher to researcher through to organisation to organisation– Across sectors and disciplines– Collaboration needs to be actively encouraged and managed

4. The precinct needs to be a microcosm of the innovation system / value chain

5. Build on existing strengths

What have we learnt?
