Before making any investment decision, one of the key elements you face is working out

the real rate of return on your investment.

Compound interest is critical to investment growth. Whether your financial portfolio consists solely of a deposit account at your local bank or a series of highly leveraged investments, your rate of return is dramatically improved by the compounding factor.

With simple interest, interest is paid just on the principal. With compound interest, the return that you receive on your initial investment is automatically reinvested. In other words, you receive interest on the interest.

But just how quickly does your money grow? The easiest way to work that out is by using what’s known as the “Rule of 72.”1 Quite simply, the “Rule of 72” enables you to determine how long it will take for the money you’ve invested on a compound interest basis to double. You divide 72 by the interest rate to get the answer.

For example, if you invest $10,000 at 10 percent compound interest, then the “Rule of 72” states that in 7.2 years you will have $20,000. You divide 72 by 10 percent to get the time it takes for your money to double. The “Rule of 72” is a rule of thumb that gives approximate results. It is most accurate for hypothetical rates between 5 and 20 percent.

While compound interest is a great ally to an investor, inflation is one of the greatest enemies. The “Rule of 72” can also highlight the damage that inflation can do to your money.

Let’s say you decide not to invest your $10,000 but hide it under your mattress instead. Assuming an inflation rate of 4.5 percent, in 16 years your $10,000 will have lost half of its value.

The real rate of return is the key to how quickly the value of your investment will grow. If you are receiving 10 percent interest on an investment but inflation is running at 4 percent, then your real rate of return is 6 percent. In such a scenario, it will take your money 12 years to double in value.The “Rule of 72” is a quick and easy way to determine the value of compound interest over time. By taking the real rate of return into consideration (nominal interest less inflation), you can see how soon a particular investment will double the value of your money.

Wilton Cedeno is currently the director of Energy Policy and Regulatory Affairs. His responsibilities include working on state regulatory affairs, developing and implementing internal and external communication strategies and advocacy related to state energy policy, including developing company positions on state energy policy issues.

Wilton Cedeno was formerly the Director for Information Resources at Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. (Con Edison), responsible for the strategic direction of the company’s information systems as they apply to gas operations, power plants, substations, engineering, and risk management. In his most recent position as General Manager for Staten Island, Wilton organized, directed and managed the construction, maintenance, operation and restoration of the electrical distribution system. Wilton’s responsibilities were to ensure the integrity, reliability, improve processes, and achieve budgeted performance targets associated with the Electric system. As Plant Manager of Hudson Avenue – Steam Business Unit at Con Edison, Wilton’s responsibilities included overseeing management in all aspects of energy production. As a Senior System Operator, Wilton had overall jurisdiction for the operation of New York City’s transmission and distribution system. His duties have spanned the full spectrum of managerial responsibility, from reliable operation and consistent maintenance of the plant, to implementation of cost efficiencies and ensuring adherence to safety requirements. He is highly valued for his ability to solve problems. He is a creative thinker who is focused on people, solutions and process improvements. In his extensive work in the community, Mr. Cedeno shows the same level of commitment and concern as in his work as Director at Con Edison. As a former member of the Central Park Conservancy’s Advisory Council, he worked hard to protect and preserve one of New York City’s world-renowned landmarks – Central Park. Wilton is Chairman emeritus of the National Board of Directors to the American

Education and ContinuingProfessional Development.

Good Shepherd School, located in northern Manhattan, has served as an anchor of the Inwood community since 1925, offering generations of New Yorkers an academically excellent, value-centered education. They then continue to their classes with dedicated and experienced teachers. They enjoy a free lunch, and weekly art, music, physical education, and computer classes. The school day ends at 2:45 PM though an after-school program is available until 6:30 PM, during which supervised activities and homework assistance is offered.Good Shepherd has also implemented a new early childhood program created by Manhattanville College Associate Professor and Chair of Early Childhood Education

Department, Dr. Patricia Vardin. The Comprehensive Early Childhood Education Model, for children from three to six years of age, is based on the latest research of child development and early learning, as well as current standards in early education. The model aims to maximize each child’s potential for optimal development and learning in subject areas that support each child’s unique strengths, talents, abilities, and interest. The model also works to create a partnership with each child’s family, and together helps the child develop social skills and good character.

“I want nothing more than my child to be happy and comfortable in her school,” says a current parent of a second grade child, “Before Good Shepherd, she would dread going to school, now she loves school! The change is remarkable, and I couldn’t be happier!”

El modelo aspira a maximizar el potencial de cada niño para un desarrollo óptimo y aprendizaje en áreas que apoyen las fortalezas, los talentos, habilidades e intereses excepcionales de cada niño. El modelo trabaja también para crear una asociación con la familia de cada niño, y juntos ayudar al desarrollo de las destrezas sociales y buen carácter del niño.

“Y no deseo nada más que mi hija se sienta feliz y confortable en su escuela”, dijo el padre de una niña estudiante de segundo grado, “antes de Buen Pastor, a ella le iba bien en la escuela, ahora ella adora la escuela!!. El Cambio es sorprendente, y no podía sentirme más feliz”!
