It gives me great pleasure to see in circulation the6th Edition of our International CONNECT CustomerNewsletter. Over the past few years TCS has madegreat strides in its endeavour to establish itselfas a global enterprise delivering a range of services, with the sole objective of facilitating our valued

clientele in all their professional and personal endeavours. Throughalliances and entities in Europe, North America, and the Middle-East, we can

today transport 'anything from anywhere to anywhere'.

The hard work and effort of TCS People in bringing TCS to its current level iscommendable, and it gladdens my heart to know that it comes from a deep convictionto stay in the pursuit of excellence. Across the world additional opportunities now beckon

us for which we have created new business units. These are Intiana (Travel Services),Octara (Training and Events), Road Transport (RT & OLE), Flyingwarehouse(Customized Airfreight Solutions), and Infothon (soon for web-based services).Three of these have already matured into companies under the collective banner

of the 'Tranzum Group'. TCS will be the pride and flagship Company of the TranzumGroup. The above names, chosen for their commercial acceptability and legal reasons, may take us sometime getting used to. A comprehensive public relations and marketinginitiative will introduce our new family of companies to all our valued clients. Theyear 2006, God-willing, would thus see us emerge as a multiple services groupoperating internationally.

Organizing ourselves for such a momentous challenge has entailed a centralization of the critical support functions ofInformation Technology, Finance, Human Resource, and Corporate Office, which comprise our core strengths. Thisbackup, reinforced by the Mission Statement, will give our new entities the direction, confidence and creativity they needto establish themselves and prosper. Driving this global effort is our proven and winning combination of Jamil Janjua as Group Chief Executive Officer andSaqib Hamdani as Group Chief Operating Officer. It is therefore my great pleasure to announce their elevation to theirnew capacities in which they will move the Tranzum Group forward across all projects and opportunities that come ourway. As we grow and expand our Network across the Seven Seas, we thank our valued customers who have reposed theirtrust in us, and we promise to work even harder in adding value to our services in their service. May the New Year bringpeace, progress, and prosperity for us all.

Bill ClintonFormer US President

“When I went to Dubai for the first time I was taken to a technologyfacility where I hooked up to a bank kiosk and found that one canuse a conventional banking service, while at the same time optfor a Islamic Sharia complaint service, which I thought waswonderful. This is a very good example of how cultures and valuescould be merged and offered to the rest.”

“Can the world’s poor be brought into the cycle of wealth andopportunity? Can the benefits of globalisation be extended to thehalf of the world population who live on US$1 a day? I am optimisticabout the future because of the rise of democracy. More than halfof the global population lives in a system where they elect theirleaders.”

“The rise of the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in bridgingthe gap left by the governments and private sector calls foroptimism.”

Madeleine AlbrightFormer US Secretary of State

“Dubai’s position combining tradition with culture makes it an arenawhere talking about globalisation is highly appropriate. Dubai isDavos (home to the World Economic Forum) but with sand insteadof snow. Globalisation is relentlessly fast paced. The problemcomes with the distribution of wealth. Too much goes to the richcountries. However, to blame globalisation for economic unfairnessis no more useful than blaming the wind. It is up to leaders toshape the consensus as to how to guide the forces of change.”

“In the past economies put up barriers to protect local companiesand indigenous industries. However, this is no solution. We havelearned through history that trade barriers backfire. We need todevelop a work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit in order to thrive.”

“The information revolution has the potential to create an enormousnumber of jobs. With half the population under 18, the region willneed 100 million jobs in the next 10 years. These will not be foundusing the old ways of closed borders and protectionism. The publicand private sectors need to work together. The key in this will beleadership.”

“It is not resources or facilities available to a country, it is how theyare used that will determine the future prosperity of a country.Central to any country is the quality of its leadership. The best giftthat a country can have is first class bankers, public servants, andprofessional bureaucrats, not oil or minerals. Prosperity leadersto better citizens that leads to greater stability which, in turn, leads

to better citizens and greater stability.”

“Abilities and infrastructure like technology allows countries toleapfrog several steps of development. However, the question is,will the technology breakdown intolerance and injustice, or will itmerely modernize without civilizing countries? Technology is nosubstitute for leadership. New technologies are amazing. Theyhelp people do what they choose. However, the future will bedecided by what people choose to do.”

Mahathir MohammadFormer Prime Minister of Malaysia

“When a country is growing you really need to keep track of allthe data involved because you must be informed to assess whetheryou are moving too fast, and perhaps you need to work out whatthe repercussions will be. You must look ahead or you could growtoo fast and produce something lopsided.”

Spencer JohnsonManagement Guru & author of ‘Who Moved My Cheese’

“The more you care for your employees the more successful yourcompany will be, and that means listening to them and hearingwhat they feel about issues such as change. The wisdom of thegroup is always greater than the wisdom of just one leader, so itis important for the company to buy into that. Prosperity is theability to succeed with relative ease. Too much change is not wise, and too many little changes don’t work. You have to make a fewbig, simple changes that will have a significant impact.”

Arie De GeusProfessor at London Business School & former executivefor Royal Dutch Shell

“The price of oil is being driven by speculation, but in the long termit is not in the interest of oil producers to keep oil prices as highas they are presently. The best price for oil producing nations takesinto account the point at which alternative fuels become viable. Ifthe price stays around US$60 per barrel it would be world’s greatestincentive for the development of alternative fuels like solar energyand wind power. Converting gas into liquid fuel became viable atUS$25.”

“Enduring organizations have often changed their core businessmore than twice. They are financially conservative; their leadersare outward looking; they have a strong value system; they allhave a very tolerant management style; and, critically, they do notdefine themselves by the nature of their assets, instead in termsof their human community.”

The leaders who gathered in Dubai for the Leaders-In-Dubaiconclave generated a lot of thought on how to make this worlda better place. Reproduced below are some choice quotes.

“The present has changed in one crucial way in that Capital haslost its key function. It is no longer the source of competitiveadvantage. Human capital is now the differentiator. The humancommunity has become even more important. Toyota understoodthis 30 years ago, and has been accumulating the knowledge andexperience of its workforce since. That is why today it generatesmore profits than General Motors and its next three biggest rivalscombined.”

Daniel PinkManagement Guru & Speechwriter for US PresidentialCandidate Al Gore

“Painters and sculptors are taking over the boardrooms, whileCFOs are being digitized or off-shored. Automation, Asia, andabundance are re-writing the rules of what will make a successfulbusiness and a successful worker in the 21st Century. Just asmachinery replaced human brawn at the end of the last century,so a combination of commoditisation, growth in outsourcing andthe rise of IT is making ‘routine’ the most dangerous word in thebusiness lexicon in developed economies. If what you do as anindividual, business or country can be reduced to a formula, orseries of repetitive actions, you should be very afraid.”

“Global economies will now be driven by right-brain attitudes wheredesigners, creators and empathisers will be leaders because theirtalents cannot be recreated offshore or made redundant bytechnology. Big picture thinking is difficult to outsource offshoreand difficult to automate. This is where Dubai has a strong advantagebecause it is a crossroads kind of a place – a multi-lingual, multi-cultural place that creates empathies and that’s where great ideascome from. When we empathise towards everyone the world’s abetter place, period! But empathy also has a business advantagebecause it cannot be outsourced or automated.”

”The new conceptual age means living in era of strong creativity. This is an age of novelty and nuance where design has becomea fundamental business literacy. An age when everyone is in thearts and entertainment business. Dubai is in the arts andentertainment business with just 8% of its GDP coming from oiland now 17% coming from tourism – and that’s the arts andentertainment business. The new conceptual age means drivinga full brain economy, with the right side being first among equals, where youth would be better advised studying fine arts than strivingfor traditional MBAs.”

“Kids should now be encouraged not to follow the traditional MBAprogrammes of the left brain era – which are now being outsourcedoffshore – but to follow master of fine arts (MFA) degrees. TheMFA has now become the new MBA because the abilities requiredto obtain it cannot be outsourced and are harder to automate.”

Kenichi OhmaeTop Japanese strategist known as ‘Mr. Strategy’

“The nation state promised much, delivered little and threatens tomake things worse. It has the potential to hold back humandevelopment through artificial compartmentalization of skills andmarkets. By breaking up the world’s population into supposedlyself-sufficient entities, nation states have stymied the realizationof interdependence. Economics and societies thrive on diversity. The most essential element of any successful region must beopenness to the outside world. The concept of native versus

foreigner must be erased, and rules limiting foreign investment orforeign ownership of land or capital must be abolished. Instead, the rest of the world must be viewed positively as the source ofprosperity.”

“Globalisation is really the liberalization of the individual, consumers, corporations and regions from the legacy of the nation state. It isabout the wisdom of choice where consumers buy the best andcheapest from anywhere in the world as per their decision and notthat of the government. Ultimately it is a competitive world, andone that will discipline all members of the global village becausewealth will migrate across national borders.”

Jack WelchWorld’s most admired CEO (General Electric)

"Dubai is the perfect model of a diversified economy. Twenty yearsago, the only thing that drove its economy was oil; now oil onlymakes up 20 per cent of its economy. Dubai has developed aflourishing tourism industry and real estate market, while its taxsystem encourages international companies to set up there. Thisdiversified economy is a "best practice" for the region. Moreover,Dubai has found a way to separate politics from business."

“Human resources are the most critical part of a company'soperations. In my time at GE, I spent all of my time on people.Hiring people is the hardest thing to get right, and I never managedto get it right more than 75 per cent of the time.”

"Differentiate between team members: take care of people whenthey're good and never kick people when they're down. Get thebest players on the field and then your team will win. And finally, with your best staff: love them, kiss them and pay them beyondbelief."

"Diverse corporations and multi-business groups are the greatestthing in business as far as I'm concerned – as long as youunderstand your core competencies. Multi-company groups areable to handle economic cycles better but they always need tohave a common culture, shared ideas and a single purpose."

Mohammed Al GergawiChief Executive Officer of Dubai HoldingChairman of the Young Arab Leaders (YAL) ExecutiveCommittee

"His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the late Presidentof the United Arab Emirates, took his people – and this region –into a new era of prosperity, through his vision and leadership. Hegave them a belief in the future and unleashed the potential of hispeople."

"Great leaders should incubate their people, then move them up,give them chances and forgive their mistakes."

"This region has always been innovative, and Sheikh Mohammedhas shown us we can achieve anything if we believe we can. Nowthe UAE ranks as the best business and economic environmentin the Arab World, as well as number 16 in the world."

"Sixty per cent of the UAE's population is under 18, and it is ourduty to develop the next generation in this part of the world."

The Khaleej Times International Forum

The Khaleej Times International Forum brought together thecream of the East and West to discuss "Muslim World andthe West: Coexistence of Civilizations." Heads of Government,Consuls and prominent businessmen attended the event thatcleared many misconceptions between the two civilizations. It was the third discussion hosted by the Khaleej Times, andattended as panelists by Lord Merlin Victor Hay who is theEarl of Errol and Lord High Constable of Scotland and amember of the British House of Lords. Also on the panel wasLord Nazir Ahmed of Rotherham, a Muslim Asian Memberof the British House of Lords and a leading voice in the 'Inter-faith Inter-religious Dialogue Group' in British Parliament. The third panelist was Lady Olga Maitland, president of theDefence Strategic Forum and a former Member of the BritishParliament, and Mohammad A. R. Galadari, Chairman of theGaladari Group.

A balance of perspective is lacking in the way both the Westand the Muslim World deal with each other was Lady OlgaMaitland's view. "You have a West that is fabulously rich andstrong, whereas the Muslim society by and large lives undermiserable conditions of poverty and dispossession," she said."The Muslims do not hate the West. What they hate is,however, certain policies of some Western countries." Theneed of the hour, according to Lord Merlin Victor Hay, is tounderstand that the ethical core of all cultures is one, beneaththe external differences that keep them apart. Lord NazirAhmed was blunt in his analysis of Western attitudes that hesaid smacked of double standards. The consensus thatemerged from the highly stimulating discourse was thatdialogue alone is the way forward for cultures and civilizationsto coexist. Javed Malik, consultant Khaleej Times InternationalForum, set the tone of the discussion in his opening remarksby stressing that the publication of the blasphemous cartoons

Challenges, challengesand more challengesThe Citizens Foundation (TCF), one of Pakistan’s most credibleand successful non-profit organizations, organized an engagingpresentation entitled “TCF’s Rehabilitation Strategy andProposal for Pakistan’s Earthquake Victims,” at the PlazaBallroom, Inter-Continental Hotel, Dubai, recently.

Attended by a multinational audience, the event focused onTCF’s relief and rehabilitation efforts conducted in theearthquake-affected northern areas of Pakistan. Mr. AhsanSalim, Chairman, along with founder-directors Mr. Ateed Riaz,Mr. Mushtaq Chapra, Mr. Arshad Abdullah, and Mr. ShahidAbdullah, flew in from Pakistan to attend the event.

Working in tandem with national and international groups, theTCF Relief Fund, quickly developed a two-pronged strategyto deal with the calamity: first, to provide immediate relief tothose affected, and second to work on a long-term rehabilitationprogram to rebuild communities.

In its immediate relief program, TCF provided basic carepackages which included tents, blankets and food rations.“Our target was to provide basic care packages to 20,000affected people but by the time this operation winds up towardsthe end of this month, we would have reached out to over30,000 people, well exceeding our initial target,” said Mr. AhsanSaleem.

TCF Chairman Ahsan Saleem being interviewed by ARY Television at the event.

“Seeing the plight and the numbers of injured being broughtin, we were compelled to set up three field hospitals,” headded.Explaining TCF’s long-term rehabilitation plans, Mr. ArshadAbdullah, said that the second phase envisages ‘rebuildingcommunities’ by providing 5,000 permanent houses to thoseaffected by the earthquake. The communities will be establishedon a “self-help” basis. The reconstruction will take into accountthe usage of material available from the rubble. TCF encouragesparticipation of women at the decision making level and in theactual re-building process. The entire reconstruction effortwould be an “all-inclusive” participation from the community. To find out more about the TCF Relief Fund and to contributetowards its efforts in providing earthquake proof shelters tothe victims of this natural disaster, please visit

Envisaging

The dynamism at TCS is all set to receive further impetus withthe coming on board of Tracey Furey to plot a sustainable pathto greater growth and prosperity through franchising. Traceyis managing director of Dubai based Franchise DevelopmentServices with offices in the US, UK, Europe, Middle East, NorthAfrica and Asia. Having signed on the dotted line with JamilJanjua (Group CEO, TCS) in Dubai, Tracey made her way toKarachi to put in focus for the TCS top management the issuesat stake. With the TCS Chairman Mr. Khalid Awan in the chair, the presentation underlined that adopting the franchisingstrategy will add credence to the TCS mission of being marketinnovators, and allow TCS to raise the return on investmenton its accrued know-how. “The TCS People will be encouragedto be open to unconventional ideas and services, and recognizenew trends at very early stages,” said Mr. Awan, expressinghis ambition to see the TCS Network grow from its present204 locations in Pakistan to 500 locations and beyond, expanding to overseas TCS businesses.

TCS has taken in hand an elaborate cyber-branding strategyreinforced through Call Center operations. Customer Relations,Sales, and the Operational backbone in the TCS franchisemodel will remain with the mother ship to the great advantageof the franchisee. Franchising enables expansion without therisk of high capital expenditures and debt accrual, and evolvesbusiness without stress to central operations.

Franchising is a business model that has been in existencefor centuries, and one that has crossed all cultures andeconomies. It was first practiced in medieval Europe wherethe task of collecting feudal taxes was assigned to individualswho whilst keeping the bulk of the taxes, paid a levy to thecountry’s kings and queens. Hence the term ‘royalty’ usedtoday to describe the dividend franchisees pay to franchisers(owners/principals). Branded giants such as Singer sowingmachines and Coca-Cola practiced the franchise model asearly as the 1890s, and its popularity amongst businessinnovators surged in the USA in the 1950s.

Also in attendance at the presentation were Mrs. Sadia KhalidAwan, Ms. Saira Awan, Mr. Jamil Janjua (Group CEO, TCS),Mr. Saqib Hamdani (Group COO, TCS), Mr. Naseem Javed(Consultant), Mr. Salman Akram (Head of Marketing, TCS),Mr. Ali Leghari (Head of Corporate Affairs, TCS), Mr. HamzaHashmi (Senior Manager, TCS Octara), and Adnan Nayab(Senior Manager, TCS Retail Network). Tracey’s second visitto Karachi focused

on plumbing the depths of the TCS Franchise Model with adedicated Task Force set up for the purpose. She conducteda Workshop to create a mission and vision statement for theTCS franchise, and brainstorm TCS core values, and theirrelevance to the TCS franchise structure. The primary andsecondary geographical targets were debated upon, in additionto what specific tools and services will TCS provide, and howthese can translate to Franchisor/Franchisee revenue streams.
