TEACHER ONLY DAY Friday 27 August
Dear whānau Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa It is with some dismay that we find ourselves in a Level 4 lockdown. You will have received an email yesterday outlining the Maidstone processes for on-line learning. Teachers are well-prepared with programmes at the ready so your child/ren should be able to access their learning activities quite confidently. Unfortunately, due to the timing, we were unable to give out Chromebooks to those who need them. I’m hoping we receive communication from the Ministry tomorrow as to how we might do that if we remain in Level 4. You will receive an email outlining this once we know the details. On a more cheerful note … Maidstone welcomed the Year 6s from our Contributing Schools to the inaugural Year 6 Sports Day last Wednesday. It was a wonderful day - the Year 7 and 8 students enjoyed seeing the younger students from their schools again, and the Year 6s participated enthusiastically. It was a great opportunity for our student leaders in MAD and Referees to use and advance their skills. Thanks to Mr Hinton, Mr Kleinjan, Mr Honey, the MAD students and the Referees, for all the mahi to make it happen! Thank you to those who have completed the Community Survey - we are getting an excellent response from across all Upper Hutt schools. The more responses we get, the more reliable the data, so please use the link below to have your say. Note it closes at the end of this week - it could be a lockdown task! Can I express the thanks and gratitude of the Maidstone community to those of you who are working as essential workers - in whatever capacity that is. At Level 4 you shoulder an extra burden - you are our heroes! Take care and stay safe. Nga mihi nui Mary O’Regan Principal/Tumuaki
The Year 6 Family Information Evening is scheduled for Thursday 2 September, from
6:30 - 8.30pm. This is a great opportunity for the whānau of our 2022 intake of Year 7s to

Volleyball Tournament
On Thursday 5 August, both a girls and boys team went to the Inter-School
Volleyball Tournament at the ASB Arena. We represented our school along
with Rhyleigh, Willow, Payton, Bella, and Faith. We played five games in
total; we won four and lost two, and placed 3rd in our pool. We sadly didn't
make it to the finals but we were so proud of how far we got. The day was a
big success!

The boys went on the same day as the girls - the 5th of August. We arrived
at the ASB Arena about 20 minutes before our first game. We started off
strong, and won our first game against Fergie along with our 3rd, 4th and
5th games against Tawa, Wainui, and Avalon. Overall, we came 5th out of
14 teams. It was a great day and we were proud of how we played!

Over the last couple of weeks our Netball Squad has been busy taking advantage of different learnings as they prepare for AIMS Games in a couple of weeks.
Last week we had Carla from Netball Wellington come along to talk about the importance of a good warm up, eating good food and drinking lots of water, recovery, stretching and getting good rest to help them prepare for a week of netball. The girls also went over some ball drills and were lucky enough to have Kelly Jury and Aliyah Dunn from the Central Pulse come along.
In the weekend just gone, a squad of 11 girls headed to Palmerston North nice and early in the morning to compete in the Mike Pero Netball Tournament. The focus for this was to try different combination, and get the girls playing together as they are from different Maidstone teams. The team played really well, supported each other, bonded as a team, and were lucky enough to come away as winner of the Year 8 Grade.
Thank you Coach Pene, parents and families for your support on this day in making it such a success.

Dyslexia Screening
SPELD is the only agency, at this stage, able to give an official diagnosis for Dyslexia. The cost is around $650, plus a
$100 membership fee.
I spoke to one of the SPELD contact ladies on the phone recently, and she mentioned there is currently a six week
wait for testing. They are based in Tawa, and there are no assessors in the Hutt Valley region, however, they are
prepared to travel!
The contact details for SPELD are:

Phone: 0800 773 536
If you phone for information, their hours are 9.30am-1.30pm

The Maidstone Mako netball team got
nominated to have a training session with the
Central Pulse netball team on Saturday 7
August. We got split into groups and did a
little warm up. We didn’t have long with them
- only half an hour. Then we did some drills.
When it was finished, we got photos and a
ball signed by the Pulse. It was really fun!

Upper Hutt Year 6 Students Sports Day at Maidstone
On Wednesday the 11th August, Year 6 students from all around Upper
Hutt came to Maidstone Intermediate. The MAD (Maidstone Athletic
Development) group and the Referee students were role models for the
day. Refs refereed the games of course, the MAD students were group
leaders. The whole day couldn’t be possible without Mr Hinton, Mr Kleinjan,
and Mr Honey. It was a very exciting day for everyone! The Year 6s learnt
many different sports, and it was a good chance for the MAD students and
Refs to show leadership and fair play. For the whole day the Year 6
students got to play sports like Dodgeball, Danish, Capture the Ball, and more. We hope to do this again next year
so we can improve and make it even better. It was a great day, and super fun and exciting! Overall, the Year 6
Sports Day was a huge success. It was awesome to see all the smiles, and it was a great opportunity for the Year
6s to see our Kura. We hope to see all those great Year 6s at Maidstone next year!

students went to Papakowhai School to tautoko
(support) Mr Robinson at his Powhiri to
Papakowhai School. It was an honour to
tautoko Mr Robinson in his transition to his new
school, and we had a lovely reception from
them. As part of the process, Maidstone
performed for Papakowhai with the help of Mr
Robinsons youngest daughter Maia. We wish
Mr Robinson all the very best for his new
journey and we will miss him very much at
Maidstone.
On Tuesday 29 June, Room 8 went to Expressions/Whirinaki to
see the Te Ara: The Stories of Our Streets exhibit. We walked to
Expressions/Whirinaki in really bad weather – rain and hail!
We met Claire Mepham from Expressions/Whirinaki and she talked
about what we were going to do. We got into groups, and each
group got a clipboard with a worksheet with an item on it. We had
to find the item in the exhibition room. When it was found, we had
to find out what it was made of, what it was used for, how it
worked, and so on. We also had a look around the exhibition room.
There was a giant map of Upper Hutt on the floor but I was
annoyed because it didn’t show where I live!
We then returned to the meeting room to do some art. We each
got a smooth piece of wood, paint, tape, and sticky circles. We
made patterns with the tape and sticky circles, and then we
painted over them with multi-coloured paint.
While our art dried, we went to look at the moon exhibit. The moon
was as tall as the roof and was made from fabric printed with all
the craters of the moon. The creator of the moon exhibit looked at
lots of different pictures of the actual moon from lots of different
angles, so it was pretty accurate.
