1st Fellowship Inauguration Ceremony
Teach4HK Inauguration Ceremony wassuccessfully held on 15th August, with around 200 guests attending. Aftercompleting the 2month summer training, ourfirst cohort of six fellows are ready to enter theclassroom and bring impact to their students.
Joining the fellows for the celebration was the guest ofhonour, Dr. Joseph Lee, President of Wofoo SocialEnterprises and Former Chairman of Committee on thePromotion of Civic Education.
“ Starting from one student, one classroom, Teach4HK will be able to effect a substantial
impact on the Hong Kong education sector one day.
-Dr. Joseph Lee
I had the opportunity to observe the education models in other countries, whichemphasize students' learning interests. Therefore, I hope to increase my students'learning interests through activity based learning. But beyond curriculum teaching,as a fellow, we need to have hearts with passion and compassion, and pass them
to every single student we meet.
“
-Shawn Chan
One of the fellows, Shawn Chan, was selected as the fellowrepresentative and he gave us an speech during the ceremony.Shawn had experience studying in UK and US and he hopes tobring a fresh perspective to his students.

INNOVATION WITHIN CURRICULUM:FLIPPING CLASSROOM
In Teach4HK, we believe only through innovations in teaching can
we add value to the existing curriculum and improve learning for
underprivileged students. Thus, fellows are innovators within their
own classrooms. We have thus factored innovations into our
summer training where fellows received trainings and sharing from
Ms. Ada Wong JP (Founder of HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of
Creativity), Principal Chu Tze Wing (who are renowned in the use of
technology in his primary school), Mr. Ha Chi Hung (who are widely
regarded as expert in “Flipping Classroom”).
After these trainings, some of our Fellows have subsequently
practiced Flipping Classroom in delivering their teaching. Gabi
shared her experiences in using that in her F.1 Integrated
Humanities and F.3 Geography Classes. “The result is quite
unexpected...in general they all understand the knowledge and can
handle the exercise, students also find it useful and beneficial as
they can repeat the lessons again according to their needs”.
Teach4HK has also met with and seek advices from Mr. Erwin
Huang (Chairman of ELearning Consortium) to explore how to
further leverage technology in our fellow’s classrooms.
INNOVATION BEYOND THE CLASSROOM:CODING EDUCATION
Besides bringing innovations into the classroom, Fellows actively
organize different kinds of extracurricular activities based on their
own background. In fact, many underprivileged students feel
bewildered about their future and are not confident in themselves
because of academic failures. Through these activities, we hope that
students can explore their nonacademic interests and develop their
potential.
Some said the ability to code has become a second language every
student should learn. Nevertheless, coding education for students
has not been widespread in Hong Kong. Realizing the significance of
technology education, Martina decided to teach her students in
HHCKLA Buddhist Ching Kok Secondary School coding as an extra
curricular activities. Currently, the study of coding is not within the
curriculum in primary and secondary school. Although there are
numerous coding courses available outside school, many of them
are conducted in English. There seems to be little opportunity for
underprivileged students to learn about coding as they can neither
pay for the tuition fee nor understand the teaching materials
completely. Martina has thus created a coding curriculum in
Cantonese and hopefully can equip students with problemsolving
skills and the ability to create.
LIFE AND CAREER EDUCATION:BEST-IN-CLASS CURRICULUM THROUGH PARTNERSHIP
In Teach4HK, we believe Life and Career Education is vital to
underprivileged students as they need the chance to explore their
path and the world. All our secondary school Fellows are assigned
into their school’s Life and Career Education Team and have initiated
various workshops and events to broaden their exposures.
Apart from Fellows initiated programs, Teach4HK also serves as an
open platform where we sources bestinclass curriculum from
partners. In this case, Fellows in Lok Sin Tong Yu Kan Hing
Secondary School bring in a Life Skill Program in partnership with
The Women's Foundation. This program equips students with key
life skills such as setting goals and financial management. It also
integrates with positive psychology, so students can learn and
practise to master their path and life. "It is quite pathetic when you
see students trying best to recall things that are happy and blessful
in the week but they can hardly make it. We practise with students
to learn to appreciate and lead a happy life."
Another example of curriculum partnership Teach4HK has is a
Creative Writing course in collaborate with Kids4Kids, taught by
Francis in Tsuen Wan Trade Association Primary School.
LIFE AND CAREER EDUCATION BEYOND CAMPUS:FIELD VISITS WITH CORPORATE SPONSORS
Another gap Teach4HK sees is the lack of exposure for
underpriviledged students. Many of them have not left their
neighbourhoods given high costs of commute. One would be
surprised how few of our Fellows’ students have actually been to
places like Tsim Sha Tsui or Central and how little they know about
places outside of their neighbourhoods. This exposure gap hinders
students from understanding of the world and significantly limits their
plans for the future. Thus, beyond regular on campus life and career
education workshops and events, Teach4HK works with our
corporate sponsors and provides opportunities for students to learn
about the world through meaningful visits or trips.
Theron, our Fellow at Tsuen Wan Trade Association Primary
School, observed a similar exposure gap among his students, who
are mostly underprivileged with ethnic minorities or “new arrivals”
family background. With the guidance of our corporate sponsor and
Rotary Club of Golden Bauhinia HK, we have organized a visit for
45 students to Ma Wan Noah’s ark and the Solar Tower together
with the companies’ volunteers. Through planting and conducting
workshops, students enjoyed the event very much and learnt more
about the environment. More visits and field learning like these
were arranged by our Fellows.
Fellows are given ownership and flexibility but will be
responsible for their effectiveness through Daily Log
system and a 360 review process.
In the 1st Quarterly Feedback Process, Fellows are
required to ask their panel heads and senior coworkers
to evaluate their performance. Panel heads and
coworkers sat in at fellows classrooms and also
completed 3 evaluation forms on (1) teaching
effectiveness (2) lesson delivery and (3)
professionalism
