Teacher’s Manual

Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart is a fun and challenging skipping program for the whole school community. First introduced in 1983, Jump Rope for Heart has been implemented in thousands of schools across Australia. The program is designed to encourage a positive attitude towards exercise, healthy eating and heart health. With over 25 per cent of children considered overweight or obese, there is still much to be done and skipping is a great start to developing lifelong healthy habits.

How does Jump Rope work?Participating schools receive a Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart resource kit, explaining how to conduct the program over a three to nine week period. During this time, students collect donations and participate in healthy activities organised at the school. At the end of the program a special ‘Jump Off Day’ is held to celebrate and demonstrate the skills learnt and health knowledge gained.

Looking after our childrenHeart, stroke and blood vessel disease is the leading cause of death in Australia, and one of the major risk factors is physical inactivity. Low levels of physical activity have been shown to be associated with increased risk of blocked arteries, high blood pressure and overweight and obesity among children as young as 12 years of age.1 Evidence that physical inactivity in childhood and adolescence may track to young adulthood

is of particular concern.2 Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart provides a unique opportunity to engage children in physical activity in a non-competitive way and encourage them to develop lifelong heart healthy habits.

National Physical activity guidelinesThe Australian Government released physical activity recommendations for children aged five to twelve years.1 Such recommendations suggest students undertake 60 minutes (and up to several hours) of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. The Jump Rope for Heart program helps students to work towards meeting the recommended physical

activity benchmarks.

Benefits for students:

• builds confidence and self-esteem

• helps students achieve and maintain a healthy weight

• builds strong bones and muscles

• improves fitness, coordination, balance, posture and agility

• is fun and challenging

• allows for creativity and working with friends and peers

• helps students learn about heart health, nutrition and how to advocate for a healthy school community.

Teacher’s Manual

Congratulations on registering for Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart and making your students health and physical activity a priority.

Step 1: Set your Jump Off dateBegin by setting a date for the Jump Off. This day marks the culmination of your program, with students, parents and teachers coming together to celebrate all that has been learnt. Once you have set your Jump Off Day, count back and see how many weeks you have to implement your program. Most schools will run Jump Rope for Heart across a three to nine-week period. The best part about the program is its flexibility – you can run the program for a period of time that suits your school best.

Step 2: Visit your school’s Jump rope for Heart websiteVisit the Jump Rope for Heart website to login to your schools special microsite. Here is your one stop shop to keep track of all of your schools online fundraising. You can also download a range of resources to help you run the program.

By encouraging your students to fundraise online you reduce the need for school staff to handle cash, people donating to students will receive automatic receipts via email and best of all, students fundraising online are likely to raise more funds than those seeking cash.

Online fundraising is the easiest, most efficient option for students, donors and

school staff. As the teacher co-ordinating the program you should be sure to check regularly for fundraising updates and ongoing results. Get in touch with us if you have any queries about the site - we are here to help.

Step 3: Set a school fundraising targetSetting a fundraising target is a great way to get the whole school behind your Jump Rope for Heart program. You could use Maths lessons to help students set a realistic and achievable target for your school. Here’s an easy equation to work with: if 40 per cent of students fundraised for the Heart Foundation, raising the national average of $70 per student, what target would our school be able to set?

Step 4: Start skipping, fundraising and educating your students about nutritionNow that you have set your Jump Off Day and have planned your program across several weeks, you’re ready to start skipping and introducing your students to the Heart Foundation’s fundraising and nutrition resources.

Share our top fundraising tips with your students and their parents:

Personalise their online fundraising page

Making an effort on their fundraising page can really pay off! Make sure they add a photo and tell people why they are

participating in Jump Rope for Heart.

Parents should be the first to make a donation

By making a donation to their child’s page parents are showing others their commitment to the cause. Plus, they set the bar for others donations – the size of the first donation is the strongest indicator of how much other people will be willing to donate.

Set a fundraising target

This is really important to help donors have a better understanding of what they would like to achieve and then help celebrate their success.

Ask, ask, ask!

Encourage all of your friends and family to support them along the way. Share their page often on social media or email them a link to your page. Always remember to say thanks – the sooner you do it after they donate the better.

Have fun!

Why not try out some skipping tricks together? Learn some new skills and have a laugh at the same time.

The best fundraisers do the following:

• Share their story on Facebook at least six times.

• Share their fundraising page via email at least four times.

• Have a profile picture on their fundraising page

• Write their personal story on their fundraising page

Step 5: Hold your Jump Off and complete the program The Jump Off is your event, to run as you would like. Whether you make the Jump Off a morning, full day or even a week-long event, the most important thing is that you make the day enjoyable for all – especially yourself!

The Jump Off is an opportunity to showcase your school by inviting in the local media, your parents and key stakeholders to show your commitment to physical activity and health. As this important day marks the end of your program, students can wear red and bring in a healthy lunch. Funds can be collected and the total amount raised can be announced. Certificates and participation stickers can be awarded on this day. It’s a skipping and health celebration for all. This is a great time to thank everyone for their participation.

Once you get to the end of your Jump Off day, it is recommended that all funds raised and required paperwork are collated and sent back to the Heart Foundation within three days of your Jump Off Day to ensure prizes are received as soon as possible. The Heart Foundation cannot process your school prize order until all funds raised and paperwork are received.

WHEN WHAT WHO COMPLETE

Week 1

Planning

• Hold a meeting with staff and explain how Jump Rope for Heart will be implemented across the school over the coming weeks.

• Explain the resources available to staff so they can support you in implementing the program in their classrooms and across the school.

• Consider providing a small staff pack, with posters, details on how to fundraise and your school’s fundraising target for each teacher to take away with them.

• Book a time in each assembly that will take place over the duration of your program so you or your selected students can provide an update on Jump Rope for Heart weekly.

• Please refer to Part 5 Extra Resources on page 120 where you will find handy resources on how you might consider recognising your students’ leadership abilities in helping you run Jump Rope for Heart at your school.

Week 2

Launch

• Launch your Jump Rope for Heart program at your school with a ten-minute presentation at your school assembly.

• Get one of your students to come up and announce your school fundraising target.

• Send our provided template letter home to parents with details of when your Jump Off is and how to fundraise online. Share your schools personalised Jump Rope link with parents too so they can register their child and keep track of how the school is performing. You might consider sending home some healthy tips as well! Tip: Every time you communicate with your parents, include a healthy initiative.

• If you would like to implement the health unit, start this week.

• Be sure to utilise all of our latest resources to get the students excited - take a look at the Teacher’s Resources.

WHEN WHAT WHO COMPLETE

Week 3

Get skipping, fundraising and healthy!

• Incorporate skipping, fundraising and the health unit (if you are implementing it) across your school, as detailed in the manual. It’s completely flexible so select lessons and teaching aids that will support you.

• Always get a student to provide an update at your school assembly on how close you are to reaching your school’s fundraising target. Ask the student providing the update to share their top skipping and/or fundraising tip!

• Tip: Print off the names of the students fundraising (you can find these on your school’s Jump Rope for Heart website) and ask them to stand up at your school assembly. Give them a big cheer and let the rest of the school community know where the funds raised are going.

• Get your students to pledge their commitment to health.

Week 4

Continue having fun!

• Leave your ropes out at recess and lunchtime so students can practise their skipping tricks learnt in class.

• Provide assembly presentations as detailed previously.

• Students can bring in healthy food to share and discuss its position on the Healthy Food Plate.

Week 5

Continue being active!

• Meet with staff and ask them to discuss how they are incorporating Jump Rope for Heart in their classrooms – are there any art posters that can be displayed around the school? Has the music class learnt a healthy eating song that they can perform at your next assembly? Remind them to encourage their kids and their parents to do their fundraising online.

WHEN WHAT WHO COMPLETE

Week 6

Continue creating a healthy school community!

• Send a reminder note home to parents that your school’s Jump Off Day is coming up and let them know how close you are to reaching your school’s target.

• Now is a good time to start planning your Jump Off activities.

Week 7

Continue skipping!

• Ask some of your star skippers to show their tricks at your school assembly

• Consider asking some of your students to assist you in inviting the media to your upcoming Jump Off.

Week 8

Hold your Jump Off Day

• Hold your Jump Off.

• Why not kick things off with a healthy breakfast?

• Consider holding a health exhibition with your students to display all they have been learning throughout the program.

Week 9

Completion

• Provide your final assembly presentation and announce what your school raised for the Heart Foundation. Connect this back with the cause and let the school community know where the funds raised are going. If there was a high achieving fundraiser or someone at your school who has been affected by a heart condition at your school, now is a great time to acknowledge their special efforts.

• Complete banking procedures as detailed in ‘Steps to complete Jump rope for Heart’.

• The sooner you send in any funds raised and completed paperwork, the sooner we can get your student prizes sent out to you. It’s easiest to do this within three days of your Jump Off Day, while it’s fresh in your mind.

FAQs

Q: When should we run the program?

A: The program is designed to be flexible so it can fit in with your school schedule. Jump Rope for Heart can be held at any time of the year, however it is recommended to participate in our key campaign periods in Term 1, 2 or 3 (ideally not Term 4).

Q: What costs are associated with running Jump Rope for Heart?

A: The Heart Foundation is a registered charity. As a condition of registration, schools are required to facilitate student fundraising and conduct a Jump Off Day. All funds raised support the Heart Foundation’s lifesaving work, including the ongoing development and implementation of Jump Rope for Heart into schools across Australia.

Q: Can the school or students buy extra ropes?

A: Yes, you can buy ropes from the Heart Foundation’s online shop

Q: Can parents/sponsors obtain individual receipts?

A: For instant receipts, encourage your students to fundraise online. It’s really easy for the parents and donors to receive receipts at the time of donation. If there are cash donors who require a receipt, simply send the sponsorship form back to the heart foundation and they will send receipts directly to the donors. Note the Heart Foundation can only provide receipts if the address and name are clearly printed.

Q: How do we organise a Demonstration Team visit?

A: There are limited Demonstration Teams across the country and while a performance is not guaranteed the Jump Rope for Heart team will do their best to organise a school visit for you. Please email [email protected] to register your interest.

Q: How do I complete the program?

A: Refer to ‘Completing the program’ on your Teacher Resource page.

Q: How do I access all the Jump Rope Resources and my school’s Jump Rope for Heart fundraising microsite?

A: Go to the Teacher’s Resources page to see all of our resources OR check your email inbox for the email from your Field Officer for the link to your school’s microsite.
