ANIMALS & COLOURS
DOG SAFETYK-4
KMY PET (PRESCHOOL, DAYCARES)
Students will learn about animals and the changes they go through inrelation to colours. They will learn how to describe colours they see onanimals and how animals use colour to hide in nature.
Students will have a tour of theWinnipeg Humane Society learning aboutthe shelter and what kind of animals we have. Students will learn what adog or a cat is trying to tell us with their body language and meet some ofthe animals at the shelter. Games and activities using puppets and propswill teach children what our animals need to stay healthy and safe.
Students learn how to understand what dogs are saying with their bodylanguage and how to act appropriately around meeting a new dog.Important lessons on how to stay safe around dogs and how to avoiddangerous situations. They will also learn about theWinnipeg HumaneSociety and our many department responsibilities.

FARM ANIMALSStudents learn about all the animals on the farm, how they live and wherethey go. They understand how each of these animals behave and how theysocialize. Chickens, cows, and pigs all have unique behaviours and needsand if those needs aren’t met, their welfare is negatively impacted.Through role-playing, games and interactive discussions students have abetter understanding of their needs and how they live.

ANIMAL NEEDS & THEIR CHARACTERISTICS
ANIMALS GROWTH & CHANGE
Have you ever been called an animal? Well, you’re close! In grade 1 wediscuss what animals need to be happy & healthy as well as comparing thatto humans. You may discover that you’re more of an animal than youthought!
Students will discover all the changes that animals go through from birthto adulthood. They will learn why some animals growmore quickly thanothers as well as finding out why animals have unique adaptations thathelp them out. We will look at some specific examples of the changesanimals face and compare those to the changes human face.

HOW ANIMALS USE PLANTS & CHANGES IN THE SEASONWild animals and your pets at home use plants throughout the year.Animals in the wild use them for food and shelter, while your pet might usethem to play or hide. As the seasons change so do animals, food that wasabundant in summer is scarce in winter; we will examine what animals doin the winter to survive and how we can see some of these changes in ourpets at home.

DOMESTIC VS WILD
ANIMAL NEEDS
What makes a good pet? This presentation focuses on the differencesbetween wild animals and domestic ones we find in our homes or on afarm. Students are introduced to terms like instincts, behaviour, andadaptations and how some animals make excellent pets while others don’t.Through interactive activities, students will learn the similarities and thedifferences between domestic animals and their wild cousins. Thepresentation will also discuss the issues of habitat loss, pollutions, andinvasive species and their impacts on wild animals. We will consider whatkinds of solutions there are.
Through presentations and interactive games, students will learn aboutanimal needs. They will compare the requirements they have with those ofdifferent types of animals. They will better understand the importance ofpet ownership and its responsibilities. They will also learn about wildanimals, their needs, and how we can help!

ANIMAL HABITATS & COMMUNITIESWild vs domesticated and what different types of animals need. Threats tohabitats and endangered animals are the topics that we will cover in thislevel. We will discuss the human impact on different habitats and whatthat does to the animals that live there. We will also consider what we cando to help endangered animals and how we can protect their homes.

WHERE DOES YOUR FOOD COME FROM?
ANIMALS IN YOUR COMMUNITY
Students discover where their food comes from. From chicken tohamburger, everything we eat comes from somewhere and students willlearn more about the animals that produce their food or become it. Theywill also learn about different farming practices and what their impacts areon the environment and our health. Things that they see on food packageslike; grass feds, free range, or organic will be explained and we will discusshow we can make changes to help improve the lives of farm animals.Educating students on what vegetarianism and veganism is, decreasingmeat consumption through meatless Monday, and making different buyinghabits like free-range or organic to help animals have more humane livesare all topics of discussion to help improve the lives of farm animals.
Students will understand the Animal Care Act and what to do if you see ananimal being abused. They will learn more about how theWinnipegHumane Society helps these animals, and what they can do to help in theirown way. Through discussion and interactive scenarios, students willbecome better aware of what animals are going through and how they canhelp in their communities and at their school like fostering, volunteering,and fundraising.

ANIMAL WELFARE
WHAT IS A FARM?
Students learn about the rise in awareness of animal welfare. Howthroughout history people have thought about and fought for animalwelfare. We will discuss its positive impact on people, and how theimprovements we make to animal health and well-being can have abeneficial effect on us as a society. They will learn how we have madeimprovements to animal welfare over the years from the Animal Care Act,Exotic Animal Circus Bans in the city, Leaping Bunny Campaign for animaltesting, and banning PuppyMills.
Students learn about how farms have changed over the centuries and howmodern factory farming came around. They learn about selective breedingand the use of intensive farming practices like battery cages, non-medicalantibiotics, hormones, gestation crates, and intensive milking practices fordairy cows. They also learn about the environmental impacts of modernfarming.

DOMESTICATION: ANIMALS & PEOPLE THROUGH HISTORYPeople have been interacting with animals all through history. Studentslearn how people domesticated some animals and why some animals werenot domesticated. We will discuss the rise in intensive farming and theissues in keeping certain animals as pets when they are not to bedomesticated. Students will learn about the needs that animals have andthe behaviours they need to exhibit in order to be healthy.

POACHING & THE ILLEGAL ANIMAL TRADE
THE FACTORY FARM
Students are introduced to the global illegal animal trade from exotic petsto the harvesting of horns, tusks, and organs. Why does it happen, wheredo these parts go, and how we can help stop it? Through interactive lessonsand discussions, students learn what impacts the animal trade has onhabitat loss and animal welfare, the role pop culture has in popularizingcertain exotic animals, and how that has an impact on poaching.
Students get an extensive look at the global impact of factory farming fromCanada to around the world. They learn the environmental effectsassociated with this practice and the implications on animal welfare andpeople. Through interactive activities and discussions, students build ontheir knowledge of animal welfare.

PET EMPATHYOur Pet Empathy program is a unique, small group setting, where studentsinteract with aWinnipeg Humane Society behaviour assessed dog to fostera better understanding of empathy towards animals and people. Thisprogram is an excellent resource for students who could benefit fromspecialized sessions focusing on topics such as; empathy, kindness, stagesof growth, emotional needs, patience, and communication.

FIELD TRIPSAll presentations are available at theWinnipeg Humane Society which willalso include a tour of the facility and animal interactions*. A field trip oftheWinnipeg Humane Society is an excellent way for students to get abetter understanding of how animals interact with people and provide agreat learning experience.
*Animal interactions at theWinnipeg Humane Society are contingent on the availability of
appropriate animals at the time of school visit. TheWHS is a high-stress environment for the
animals in our care so following the rules that the tour guides and other staff give out is vital
for all visitors and the animals themselves.

PET THERAPY
SEE SPOT READ
The Pet Therapy program is an animal-assisted pet therapy usingWHSbehaviour assessed dogs to provide affection and comfort to people with avariety of needs and conditions who would benefit from the support andattention of a trained animal. These dogs help students with physical,mental, and behaviour needs to make closer connections with animalsbased on the reported benefits of these types of therapy practices.
The See Spot Read program is a unique partnership between theWinnipegHumane Society, theWinnipeg Public Library, and St. John Ambulancedesigned to provide a motivating, non-judgemental environment forelementary students who are experiencing difficulties with reading andproves to reduce the stress and anxiety students sometimes feel whenreading aloud. Students will be partnered up with a St. John Ambulancecertified therapy dog and will be given a safe space to practice their readingconfidence without any perceived judgment. Animal reading programshave had a documented positive benefit on confidence building. The SeeSpot Read program has limited spots and runs for 10-week sessions (1 xweek) every fall, winter, and spring. Contact us today to register yourschool!

KID CAMPSWHS Kid Camps give children a chance to learn about animals andresponsible pet ownership. We provide a look into our shelter and showcampers how we help animals here find new and happy homes. With age-appropriate crafts, games, workshops, guest appearances and presentationsfrom local animal groups, theWHS will help your child make the most oftheir time away from school.
Our Kid Camps run throughout the week of Spring Break and allthroughout the summer months. Geared for children ages 5 – 13 years.
