1 The Written Assignment is 20% of the final grade in both English B Standard Level and Higher Level. Standard Level At Standard Level, the Written Assignment is based on an inter-textual reading. Students choose a minimum of three and maximum of four texts related to a theme from the Core subjects. The assignment is to produce a piece of well-organized writing in a chosen text type. The rationale should be between 150 and 200 words, followed by a written task of between 300 and 400 words. Higher Level At Higher Level, students are required to produce a creative piece of writing based on one or two of the literary texts studied. The rationale should be between 150 and 250 words and the text between 500 and 600 words. General information Students may use dictionaries and reference works. The assignment is not timed. Teachers should assist the students in understanding the requirements of the task and the assessment criteria. Students must be made aware of the fact that the work must be their own, original writing. The teacher can advise on the choice of topic and give oral, but not written, comments on the first draft. The teacher must also confirm that the work is the student’s own work. Chapters 23 and 24 assignments Chapter 23 Higher Level Written Assignment In Chapter 23, students are provided with a selection of literary excerpts and texts together with suggestions for creative writing assignments to practise the Written Assignment task. In addition, at the end of most chapters of the Teacher’s Guide there are suggestions for additional literary texts related to the chapter themes. Chapter 24 Standard Level Written Assignment In Chapter 24, the aims of the Written Assignment are reviewed and a selection of texts is provided for students to practise the task of inter-textual reading and then creating a chosen text type, explaining their choice in the rationale. The Written Assignment is 20% of the final grade in both English B Standard Level and Higher Level.

Standard Level

At Standard Level, the Written Assignment is based on an inter-textual reading. Students choose a minimum of three and maximum of four texts related to a theme from the Core subjects.

The assignment is to produce a piece of well-organized writing in a chosen text type. The rationale should be between 150 and 200 words, followed by a written task of between 300 and 400 words.
