____ 1. Sandra had never been left alone with her baby brother. She worried about what could go wrong, but also knew she was a good babysitter and a responsible older sister. Little Sammy would be just fine.

____ 2. Lydia stood with the expectant crowd on the flat plain, waiting. In the distance, they could hear the workers clanging the rails into place. They were getting closer and closer. In less than an hour, the eastern and western railroad lines would be joined, making it possible for anyone to cross the nation in just under a week’s time.

____ 3. The alien ship hovered above the landing pad. The ground crew waited expectantly, hoping the ship would touch down without incident. Sure, they had a lot of shuttle traffic at the spaceport every day, but this would be the first time a ship from another planet would touch down.

____ 4. The parliament of rabbits gathered in the hall carved into a great tree in the enchanted forest. A large cottontail stood and walked to the podium. “My fellow rabbits,” he began, “We are faced with an increasingly urgent threat from the Troll Nation. They are not content to guard the bridges or control the great grasshopper herds of the mountain slope. They now plan to invade our kingdom. To help us protect what is ours, we have enlisted the assistance of Darmouth, a great dragon from the north.”

____ 5. The city was still dark and deep in a fitful sleep when Anthony and Carl trudged down the steps of their tenement. They hoped the breadline would not be too long, but they assumed they’d be waiting for hours. They had no choice. After the stock market crashed and the nation plunged into an economic depression, the only way their families could eat was if the boys made it to the line early enough to get some of the food the city was distributing to the poorest residents. Carl joked darkly, “1930 is certainly a bad year to bring an appetite to.”

____ 6. At warp speed, the view from the window was nothing more than flashes of white light. Sylvia felt a bit dizzy. She always hated when they traveled at light-speed. It made her feel disoriented, and she often ended up with a headache.

____ 7. Harrison watched the sunrise over the shadow of Earth. Life on the moon colony was not a lot different from what he’d expected. Sure, the nights were very dark, and there were a lot more rules about conserving oxygen and water, but otherwise, he did the same things he had done on earth: went to school, played with his computer, met his friends for a game of basketball after dinner.
