1. Objectives of the TA Orientation and Induction Program Teaching Assistantship is not only a job or responsibility, but also a part of the educational training which
benefits TAs’ professional development. Furthermore, TAs play an essential role in the undergraduate
education at UST. To equip TAs taking up the duties, the TA Orientation and Induction Program aims to:
Introduce the roles and responsibilities of TAs
Introduce the basic teaching and presentation skills to facilitate new TAs’ teaching in UST
Familiarize TAs with the teaching and learning resources at UST
Foster and enhance TAs’ communication with faculty, TACs and CELT
Enhance the professional development of TAs to prepare them for lifelong career development
2. Overview of the TA Orientation and Induction Program 2013-2014 The TA Orientation and Induction Program is offered both in the Fall and Spring semester of the academic year
2013-2014. The program comprises two major sessions, the “Mandatory Core Session” and the “Elective
Session”. In order to complete the entire program, each new TA is required to attend at least a total of 14
hours of workshops, including all mandatory core workshops in the program. For TAs whose departments do
not have laboratory sessions, they are not required to take TA114 Conducting Labs (see department list below)
and they can choose at least one elective to make up the total of 14 hours of TA training. Upon completion
of the program, each TA will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement in the TA Ceremony in May 2014.

2.1. Mandatory Core Sessions – Compulsory for all new TAs
2.1.1. REQUIREMENT
Core Sessions cover two categories: (I) Knowing about Teaching Assistantship in UST and (II) Fundamental
Teaching and Learning Skills. In order to fulfill the requirement of the TA program, TAs are required to attend
at least a total of 14 hours of workshops, including all mandatory core workshops.
Those who are not required to take ‘TA114 Conducting Labs’ as a compulsory workshop need to take
additional elective workshop(s) to make up the total of 14 hours for the TA training.
2.1.2. SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT FOR ‘TA114 CONDUCTING LABS’
TA114 is compulsory for departments with laboratory sessions, including LIFS, ENVS, CHEM, PHYS, CBME, BIEN,
CIVL/EVNG, CSE, ECE, MECH and IELM.
All new TAs from the above-mentioned departments have been pre-registered into this workshop based on
input from the respective departments.
2.2. Elective Sessions – To be chosen by TAs
2.2.1. REQUIREMENT
Elective Sessions cover two areas: (I) Supplementary Teaching and Learning Skills and (II) Teaching Tools. In
order to fulfill the requirement of the TA program, TAs are required to attend at least 1.5 hours of workshop
from the elective sessions if they have not fulfilled a total of 14 hours of TA training.
Regarding the registration procedure for the elective sessions, please refer to ENROLLMENT below.
2.2.2. ENROLLMENT
The elective workshop(s) is/are chosen by TAs.
TAs are encouraged to discuss with their respective TA Coordinators (TACs) or PG Coordinators (PGCs) for
choices matching their work requirements.
TAs who wish to participate in the elective workshops MUST register online for the desired workshops.
Registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis via the TA Online Registration System at
http://celt.ust.hk/taprog from 19 Aug 2013 (Mon) onwards.
In case the desired workshop is full, an automatic waiting-list system will operate. Reminders will be sent to
participants once their registration is confirmed.
IN CASE OF WITHDRAWAL
For any TA who decides to withdraw from a registered workshop for whatever reason, please visit the TA
Online Registration System at http://celt.ust.hk/taprog to cancel the registration, so as to release the seat for
other participants.
TAs are advised to ensure their availability before registering for other workshops.
2.2.3. NEW TAs WITHOUT ITSC (IT Services Center) ACCOUNTS
For New TAs who DO NOT have ITSC network accounts (email accounts):
Access the ITSC network account application website: http://www.ust.hk/itsc/account/stuacc/enquiry/
Once the account is set up, please send an email to CELT at [email protected] and provide the following
information to facilitate registration of the respective workshops:
(1) Full name (2) Student number (3) Department (4) ITSC account
It is your responsibility to apply for an ITSC account and notify CELT in a timely manner so that you can attend
the TA training workshops during the designated period.
2.2.4. CANCELLATION OF WORKSHOPS
CELT reserves the right to cancel any workshop session with less than 10 registrants.

3. TA Policies 3.1. New Policy on TA Assignments for RPg Students
3.1.1. The TA Policy
The Office of the Provost issued the ‘New Policy on TA Assignments for RPg Students’ in 2011
announcing that with effect from Fall 2012-2013, ‘newly admitted RPg students should not be assigned
any TA duties during their first semester as a student at HKUST’. However, exemption is granted to
‘students who previously pursued UG or Master’s (TPg or MPhil) studies at one of the eight UGC-funded
tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, as they are already familiar with the local environment.’ (i.e. ‘New TAs
[HK graduates]’)
3.1.2. TA Training Status

3.1.3. TA Training Arrangements in Fall 2013-14
Under this policy, to provide timely training for TAs to take up their TA duties, CELT implements the
following arrangements in the Fall 2013-14 TA Orientation & Induction Program:
Mass Orientation & tea reception for all new TAs/RPgs will be held on 22 August 2013 from
2:00-5:00 pm at LT-A and the concourse. All new RPgs are required to arrive at HKUST in time to
join the orientation.
Two major rounds of TA training will be offered to (a) ‘New TAs [HK graduates]’ and ‘Incomplete
current TAs’ – TA training will be held in late August 2013, and (b) other ‘New TAs [non-HK
graduates]’ – TA training will spread from mid-September to October 2013.
3.2. TA Program Policies
3.2.1. Policy on SESSION LATENESS and LEAVING EARLY
Lateness and early leave in classes are strongly discouraged. For a 1.5-hour class, a student could only
be late or leave early for 15 minutes. For a 1-hour class, a student could only be late or leave early for 10
minutes. Class attendance of the latecomer and early-leaver exceeded the time limits above will NOT be
counted.
3.2.2. Policy on SESSION ATTENDANCE TAKING
Signing in and/or attendance for others, signing in without attending is strictly prohibited. Attendance
for such cases will NOT be counted and will be reported to the departmental PG Coordinator.

5. Detailed Descriptions of TA Training Workshops
5.1. Core Sessions – Knowing about Teaching Assistantship in UST

Workshop Description
TA 101 Mass Orientation
Session
This is a face-to-face mass orientation session for ALL incoming TAs. TAs will be greeted by Prof Mordecai GOLIN, Associate Vice-President for Postgraduate Studies, and Mr Nick NOAKES, Director of CELT. TAs will also be briefed about the basic information regarding the TA Orientation and Induction program as well as the supporting services at UST.
TA 102 Departmental
Briefing Session
This workshop will be hosted by departmental TACs in separate classrooms so that they can meet with their new TAs and brief them about departmentally specific matters. PGCs, Department Heads and other concerned parties will be invited to attend this briefing session.
TA 103 ICAC Seminar
This is a 60-minute talk organized by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). The objectives of the talk are: (1) to enhance vigilance of TAs against the risks and consequences of corruption and dishonest acts in their daily work; (2) to raise the importance of practicing ethics as the first line of defense against graft / malpractices; and (3) to equip TAs with necessary legal knowledge and practical skills to identify and handle ethical dilemmas at work.
TA 104 Introduction to LMES
LMES, Learning Management and Evaluation System, is an online Learning Management System developed by UST. Currently, there are over 700 courses using the LMES every semester. This workshop is designed for ALL new TAs to learn the basic and key features of the system. Hands-on practice will be provided to ensure that after the workshop they will be able to: (1) set up courses, (2) manage course materials, (3) communicate with students, and (4) monitor students’ learning progress in the LMES.
TA 105 Using AV Facilities in Lecture Theater and
IT Classroom
This is a 1-hour workshop offered by ITSC for ALL new TAs. This workshop aims to: (1) acquaint TAs with all instructional equipment and facilities offered by ITSC, and (2) provide guidelines and hands-on practice in using computing facilities and Personal Response System (PRS) in lecture theaters and IT classrooms.

Part II will be conducted by the Publishing Technology Center (PTC) and the Library (LIB).

TA 111 Effective Teaching
Skills
This workshop intends to equip TAs with some practical teaching skills as TAs at UST. By the end of the workshop, TAs should be able to (1) describe the roles and duties of being a TA at UST, (2) explain common problems in teaching and ways to handle them, and (3) identify teaching resources available.
TA 112 Marking &
Grading
TAs will learn the basic principles of marking and grading through working on a simulated marking exercise in groups. By the end of the workshop, TAs should be able to (1) describe some basic principles of marking and grading, and (2) identify resources available to enhance their knowledge and practice of marking and grading.
TA 113 Effective
Presentation Skills for Teaching
This is a 1.5-hour workshop. It aims to introduce some effective in-class presentation strategies for TAs. Group activities and discussion will be used to ensure that after the workshop TAs will be confident to prepare, develop and deliver successful presentations for teaching.

TA 121) Conducting Labs
This is a face-to-face workshop which aims to: (1) increase TAs’ awareness of laboratory safety, (2) discuss common issues of conducting labs, and (3) introduce effective ways of performing their lab duties. It is followed by a discussion session hosted by TACs on major issues that TAs should be aware of when conducting labs.

Management
This is a 1.5-hour workshop in which TAs will learn how to manage a class for more effective teaching and learning. TAs will be provided with (1) basic key strategies to minimize the chance of having classroom disruptions, and (2) advice on handling different disruptive situations when they occur.
TA 123 Techniques for
Interactive Teaching
This is a 1.5-hour workshop which aims to enhance the effectiveness of classroom teaching by increasing interaction between teachers and students and student peers. This workshop will introduce (1) the principles of interactive teaching, (2) different techniques for interactive teaching, and (3) common issues when implementing interactive teaching and ways to handle them.
TA 124 Balancing Time
between TA Duties and Research
This workshop will address various issues of managing time as a TA and PG student at UST. Useful time management tools and practical advice for TAs to manage their time more effectively will be introduced. It will also discuss the issue of procrastination and ways to combat such a habit.

Communication in the Classroom I – Giving instructions and explanations
Giving instructions and explanations are basic components of any teaching situation. This workshop provides training in giving clear and effective instructions using appropriate language, while maintaining good social relations with students. The workshop also provides participants with some useful language for explaining concepts, principles and procedures.
TA 126 Communication in the Classroom II – Asking questions
A key component of effective teaching is the skillful use of classroom language to create good communication within the classroom. The ability to ask questions is a valuable tool when leading student activities. This workshop provides training in asking questions for the following purposes: checking understanding; clarifying ideas; establishing students’ knowledge of a subject; stimulating interest in a topic. The workshop also examines how classroom questions can be sequenced to create a progression from low to high levels of challenge.

TA 131 Advanced
PowerPoint Presentation
This workshop is designed for intermediate users to develop a typically static PowerPoint presentation into a more visually dynamic one. In this workshop, TAs will learn how to (1) import, process and integrate graphics, audio and video into PowerPoint presentations, (2) add transition and animated effects to the presentations, (3) create animation with motion path, and (4) package the presentations. This workshop will involve short input sessions followed by guided practice. Please note that participants should have a basic knowledge of MS PowerPoint, such as templates, color schemes, slide layouts, bullets and slide addition.

Developing your Instructional Website with Google Sites
This workshop is designed for beginners to develop a simple instructional website with Google Sites. Starting from planning the structure to publishing the page onto the internet, followed by gaining useful guidelines about building webpages. After the workshop, TAs will be able to: (1) build a simple website with tips provided, (2) prepare and organize the contents for the website, (3) create web pages for the website, including integrating multimedia elements, (4) apply different themes to enhance the aesthetics of the website, and (5) collaborate with others in Google Sites. This workshop will involve short input sessions followed by guided practice.

Using Email as Effective
Communication Tool
This workshop is designed for all TAs who would like to enhance their electronic communication with others by using an email tool effectively. In this workshop, TAs will learn how to: (1) process and manage emails effectively including using the “Inbox Zero” action-based methodology, and (2) apply appropriate email etiquette in email communication with others to communicate properly and skillfully.

7.1. GENERAL ENQUIRY

7.2. ATTENDANCE RECORD
TA’s attendance records for ALL sessions will be compiled into one report and submitted to the
Department and PG Coordinators by the end of every Fall and Spring semester.
7.3. ASSESSMENT
The TA program complies fully with the University’s regulation on academic integrity and discipline
as stated in the Academic Calendar and the Academic Programs Manual
(http://www.ust.hk/provost/ug/APM/home.htm).
In the case of any TA contravening these regulations in doing any tasks of the program, he/she will
be disqualified from the program. The case will be reported to the respective Department.
7.4. BAD WEATHER ARRANGEMENTS
If a Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No.8 (or above) or a Black Rainstorm Warning Signal is issued,
the following arrangements will apply:
(A) For workshop(s) not yet started
If either one of warnings is issued 2 hours before the start of the scheduled workshop(s) Workshop(s) will be cancelled.
The affected workshop(s) will be postponed until further notice. If either one of the warnings is issued within 2 hours before the
start of the scheduled workshop(s)
(B) For workshop(s) already started
When Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 8 (or above) is issued
Workshop(s) will be suspended immediately.
When Black Rainstorm Warning Signal is issued Workshop(s) will continue unless special announcement is made.
When Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No.3 or the Red Rainstorm Warning Signal is in force, all
workshop(s) will be held as scheduled unless a special announcement has been made (in which case
TAs will be notified by email).
