Introduction – Definition & AimsJustification for Training CPRFactors Exacerbating CPRExperience in Teaching CPR In the Advanced Countries In the Developing CountriesWay Forward in the Developing Countries

INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTIONDefinition:Definition:What is CPR?CPR is an acronym for Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation which is a combination of 2 Rescue Breaths-mouth to mouth- respiration and 30 Chest Compressions. Five(5) Circles is required to maintain Artificial Respiration & Blood Circulation.

INTRODUCTION…INTRODUCTION…Aim:Aim:Training and Certification of Health Care Professionals, Corporate and Industrial Staffs in Resuscitation skills such as Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) & Automated External Defibrillation AED).

Experience has proven that better quality CPR leads to a greater chance of Patient surviving a Cardiac arrest.

Justification for CPR in Justification for CPR in Nigeria:Nigeria:Nigeria is no exception among other

developingCountries: high rate of unreported and undocumented out –of –hospital cardiac arrest. Life expectancy rate of 46.53 years which is 30% below the world average ranking 209 th

out of 225 countries evaluated. Everyday more than one person suffers premature or sudden death if not one victim every

hour Most sudden cardiac arrests are stress related Stress is the leading cause of most Cardiovascular Disease (CVD); other causes include

Road Accidents, Drowning, etc.

Justification…Justification… Nigeria has one of the most extensive road networks in West Africa.

- However, this does not often translate to easy access by emergency rescue services.

The streets are often congested or barely motor able.

- This cripples the responses of emergency response services.

- Leaving the life of innocent victim in the hands of

bystanders.

Bystanders are often not adequately trained to handle such situations .

Fear of persecution by authorities.

Identified Factors Responsible for Identified Factors Responsible for Stress Situation in NigeriaStress Situation in Nigeria: : 1. Stressful Roads, unworthiness and unsafe.2. Most vehicles are not inspected and unsafe to be

on the road.3. Most, if not all Ambulances are

neither standardized nor equipped. Extrication is essential Ambulance equipment in developing countries.

4. First Responder training and certification to include our able Police Officers & Traffic Wardens

5. There is no existing BILL in the Nation for CPR, AED & Good Samaritan Act.

6. Bystander CPR, AED training skills should be extended to all Schools

Why CPR?Why CPR? For out-of- Hospital cardiac arrest, bystander CPR increases the likelihood of survival by 2 to

3 times For drowning, CPR may be all that is required to resuscitate them.  In order to achieve this, many people within the community must be CPR skilled. It has been recognized that CPR needs to be taught at an early age as part of school

curriculum. With the mandate and adoption of the BILL, every CPR skilled bystander will be willing to

rescue victims.

CPR MethodologyCPR Methodology

METHODS:METHODS:Any organization can use AHA ECC materials and teach courses, but only authorized training centers with valid contracts may issue course completion cards.

The issuance of a course completion card is the assurance for a student that they have received the best quality ECC training available from the AHA.

AHA ECC Course Completion Cards issued anywhere in the world are accepted equally inside and outside the U.S. card

WHY FIRST RESPONDERS TRAINING IS SO IMPORTANT:WHY FIRST RESPONDERS TRAINING IS SO IMPORTANT:

First Responders consist of Police Officers, Firemen and Ambulance Crewmembers.

Methodology…Methodology…

The First Responders Training The First Responders Training

The First Responders Training and certification is very essential and urgently needed in our society where human life safety preventive measures have never been a top priority. So many lives have been lost on our roads, inside our houses due lack of preventative measures

Most African Countries are naturally wealthy nations though not expended on well being grass root training/empowerment will lead us again to “open doors”, healthy communities and safe strong nations again. Learn, live and let live!

We are taking CPR to school teachers, your drivers and housemaids, remember they spend more time with your young children.

It is time for the teachers to learn together. On Thursday, February 19th, we brushed up on CPR. We learned some new things and our teacher made the class fun.

It is time for Nigeria Teachers as well!

Training in the US…Training in the US… 3 reasons why you should get an AHA 3 reasons why you should get an AHA CPR Training/Certification:CPR Training/Certification:

Experience in Teaching CPR in Experience in Teaching CPR in NigeriaNigeria

At the end of 2008,15Doctors, 52Nurses, 2Pharmacists, 6 Social

Health workers   have been trained and certifiedThere is no National Emergency Phone number

(US: 911; UK: 999)    Inappropriate Vehicles used as Ambulances:Non approval of funds for training remains a

major challenge with most organizations… including some unexpected quarters !!!

There is no training provision for Bye standers including School Children.

The next person may be me and I want to make sure that the person next to me is CPR SKILLED!

workplaces and Communities required traveling on roads from Lagos State to the hinterlands. Road conditions especially in the East-West, Southern-Middle Belts States are death traps!

This is where those new Ambulance are needed the most, at State’s boundaries or middle ways. Until then, bystander CPR will continue.

Teaching CPR in Teaching CPR in Nigeria…Nigeria…

US AHA, ECC Branch Office have been very supportive morally and spiritually.

Nigeria Corporate Affairs Commission also gave me a life-time experience.

We have trained 15 Doctors, 56 Nurses, 3 Pharmacists, 6Social Workers and circle of friends and family. Presentations of the training have been delivered to 7States within the Six National Zones.

Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba-Lagos State broke the yolk to become the first CPR Trained & Certified Staffed Hospital.

Our resource people are notable professionals

Way ForwardWay Forward  Simple CPR techniques such as compressions, leads to better skill retention and

greater willingness to attempt resuscitation on a stranger. Training or Teaching cardiopulmonary resuscitation is about you and me. This is a Mission Call for me and this is all about you! The impact of experience on helping behavior is greater within bystanders than

Health Care Professionals, same is noted between Older and younger folks, Wealthy and less privileged people are also studied on this helping behavior.

THE BILL FOR CPR, AED & GOOD SAMARITAN ACTTHE BILL FOR CPR, AED & GOOD SAMARITAN ACT

This Bill has been written according to the needs of our Nation and her people. It is very frighten to see the impact of undue process in our communities. People are afraid to rescue road traffic accident victims because of Police

harassments. They will not hesitate to impose a jungle justice on you if your vehicle should be

visible by a highway accident victim and you are the Good Samaritan especially in the inner central South-Eastern States! The Bill is needed.

Way Forward…

Way ForwardWay ForwardThe Federal government cannot do it all. First

Responder trainings, Training the Trainers is in progress and registration is encouraged before you leave this conference.  However, the legislature on CPR, AED & GOOD SAMARITAN ACT needs MANDATE NOW!

International experience has shown that school-age children are more likely to accept CPR training than older people; they are motivated to learn, and do so quickly and easily.

The European Resuscitation Council, the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics have all recommended that resuscitation be taught to all school children.

If funds are not approved for CPR training, hence add this to the school curriculum in the next school year.  This should be cheerfully accepted because of the facts stated above.

Way Forward…Way Forward…Purchase of training media from

external training agencies, and for training teachers in order to conduct in-house teaching.

Although we would provide useful additional exposure for students, the presence of skilled and interested teachers would allow skills to be taught and Manikins would be made available on contact.

ConclusionConclusion The sky is large enough for all the birds to fly, including Airplanes! If anyone is

willing to teach CPR for their own gainful purposes; please do a universal training and be mindful of recalled equipments.

This Project has accepted partnership with Nigeria Heart Foundation (NHF). We are offering our training services to promote the mission of the Foundation. Long live NHF!

Nigeria is not a dumping ground our goal is to train, rescue, and save lives. Making the difference between life and death!

AcknowledgementAcknowledgement Many thanks to the organizer of this Conference, my great US home office’s President AJ Becker, my friends and my

loving family members, This includes my ever ready siblings who have come to accept me just as I am knowing very well that a child cannot be exchanged.

Each and every one of you has made me a stronger person. You have been great source of encouragement and I have come to learn the difference between working in US for salary and teaching from my heart in Nigeria.

Every obstacle has been great challenges; I can see the difference between TEACHING CPR IN WORK PLACE, COMMUNITY and REAL LIFE CPR HANDS ON DECK EXPERIENCE ALONG LAGOS - ABUJA HIGHWAYS.

The legislature on CPR, AED & GOOD SAMARITAN ACT needs MANDATE NOW!
