CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background
In Indonesia, English is considered the first foreign language. It is
taught formally from elementary school up to university level because
English is very important and has many interrelationships with various
aspects of life owned by human being. Entering the era of globalization or
better known as the free market requires every individual to prepare
resources that are reliable, especially in the fields of science and
technology. In this case the role of English is needed in communication
technology to interact directly.
There are four skills in English language that should be mastered,
they are: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The reading skill
became very important in the education field, students need to be
exercised and trained in order to have a good reading skill. The students
should be able to master more vocabulary if they want to learn the four
skills. Without speaking, we are like dumb persons. Most of us are
familiar with how people feel about appearances, but the manner in which
you speak is also important. Even if you are dressed nicely, using poor
grammar will show that you are wolf in sheep's clothing. You might look
nice on the outside, but you're not so nice in the inside. To succeed, you

2
must focus on your appearance as well as your manner of speaking.
Competence-oriented is used in the curriculum today, meaning that
students are required to have certain competencies or skills as a result of
the learning process at school. Competency-based education is emphasized
on the ability to be possessed by graduates of the education level.
Competence is often called the standard of competence or the ability
which generally must be mastered graduates. Therefore, the
implementation of competency-based education is expected to produce
graduates who are able to compete at the global level.
Learning and speaking English is an important step in the
settlement process because it helps newcomers obtain better jobs, get
involved in their communities, participate in events, vote with confidence
and express themselves. Therefore, the writer is interested in Teaching
English Speaking to the students in SMP N 1 Masaran and the apprentice
held job training as an English teacher at SMP N 1 Masaran especially for
the first grade students of Junior High School in focusing this final
project. The apprentice wants to complete the data for final project report
and improve skills and abilities in teaching students. The title of this final
project is "Teaching Speaking to the First Grade Students of Junior
High School of SMP N 1 Masaran".

CHAPTER II
LITERATURE REVIEW
In chapter II, the writer is going to discuss the literature review
related to the topics of the final project. Here, three topics are presented,
teaching, teaching English speaking to young learners, and techniques of
teaching speaking.
A. Teaching
“Teaching is guiding, facilitating, learning, enabling the learner to
learn, and setting the condition for learning” (Brown, 2000:7). It means
that, the teacher should guide the students in learning process. Teacher
does not only guide a student, but also facilitate the students in materials.
The teacher gives material and asks students to do the assignment from the
teacher.
According to Bill Page (http://teachers.net/gazette/JAN02/page.html),
“Teaching is relationship between teacher and learner. The learner gets the
benefit of the learning, while the teacher gets credit for the teaching." It
can be concluded that, teaching is a process of learning between teacher
and students. In learning, students can receive material that is given by
teachers, and teachers also get benefit from the learning.
perpustakaan.uns.ac.id digilib.uns.ac.id
commit to user
6
Teaching is managing situation and condition of learning activity. The
teacher has to manage the class and gives assignment that will be useful
for the students and the teacher.
B. Teaching English Speaking to Young learners
Speaking is "the process of building and sharing meaning through the
use of verbal and non-verbal symbols, in a variety of contexts" (Chaney,
1998:13). Speaking is a crucial part of second language learning and
teaching. As a result, Students are expected to express themselves and
learn how to follow verbal and non-verbal symbols appropriate in each
communicative circumstance.
Teaching speaking to young learners is an interesting and challenging
duty for teachers for some considerations. In one hand, young learners are
individuals of very early age who are interested in many new things such
as a foreign language, English. Young learners will enthusiast in learning,
if we often praise them. Due to the praise, they would like the material that
we teach and they will be motivated to learn English happily. “Young
Learners are enthusiastic and positive about learning. We all thrive on
doing well and being praised for what we do and this is especially true for
young learners. It is important to praise them if they are to keep their
enthusiasm and feel successful from the beginning. If we label children
failures, then they believe us.”(Scott&Ytreberg 2000:3).

7
From the definition above, it can be concluded that Teacher should
provide maximum opportunity to the students to speak the target language
by providing a rich environment that contains collaborative work,
authentic materials and tasks, and shared knowledge.
C. Techniques of Teaching English Speaking to Children
1. Mulyono state that, there are three skills in teaching speaking,
guided speaking, responsive speaking, and productive speaking.
a. Guided Speaking
Guided speaking is emphasized on pronunciation and limited
speaking with clue or track that has been planned.
b. Responsive Speaking
The ability of the students in speaking can be stimulated from
reading (English only), and reading has many vocabularies and
structure of language. In this second technique, the ability of
students in English speaking appears with stimulate reading
c. Productive Speaking

8
Speaking a broad discourse is the main purpose of this
technique. However, it can be obtained if the student has
mastered the first and the second technique well.
pengajaran-speaking-conversation/).
2. Suggestopedia
“Suggestopedia is a teaching method, which focuses on how to
deal with the relationship between mental potential and learning
efficacy and it is very appropriate to use in teaching speaking for
young language learners” (Xue, 2005:27). By using this teaching
method, Young language learners can lower their affective filter.
3. Using comfortable environment.
In the classroom, the chairs are arranged semicircle and faced the
black or white board in order to make the students pay more
attention and get more relaxed. The light in the classroom is dim in
order to make the students’ mind more relaxed.
4. Reporting the topic
Before coming to class, students are asked to read a newspaper or
magazine and, in class, they report to their friends what they find
as the most interesting news. Students can also talk about whether
perpustakaan.uns.ac.id digilib.uns.ac.id
commit to user
9
they have experienced anything worth telling their friends in their
daily lives before class.
5. Using Pictures
The teacher gives a picture at random. Students sort the pictures
and tell the events in the picture. Using pictures can develop
teaching speaking process.
As well as enjoying pictures they also form a key resource
for accessing the different learning styles that each student
has. Using pictures really appeals to visual learners who
may suffer in a speaking and listening based classroom.
They also offer an opportunity for movement and a multi-
dimensional perspective which will reach our kinesthetic
learners. Available at

13
Masaran. Before doing the job training, the writer observed
English teaching process that was conducted by the teacher of SMP
N 1 Masaran. As a result the writer could understand how the
condition of the classes and how to manage the classes there.
2. Making lesson plan
The writer had to make a lesson plan before teaching. The writer
should consult with English teacher of SMP N 1 Masaran before
she made a lesson plan in order to minimize the mistakes of the
lesson plan. The lesson plan was made based on the syllabus that
given by English teacher.
a. Building Knowledge of Field
In BKOF the writer refreshes the students’ mind. The writer
also reminded them to the previous material, expression like
and dislike that would be discussed more in the class. The
writer greeted the students as follows:
The writer : Good morning students!
Students : Good morning Miss.
The writer : How are you?
Students : I’m fine miss, thank you. And You?
perpustakaan.uns.ac.id digilib.uns.ac.id
commit to user
14
The writer : I’m fine too. Thank you.
After that the writer asked the students about the last material.
In this section the writer used bilingual, English and
Indonesian:
The writer : Do you still remember our last material we had?
Masih ingat materi yg kita bahas kemarin?
Students : Yes! “Like & Dislike” Miss.
The writer : Do you still remember how to express “like”?
Raise your hand please!
Bagaimana cara mengekspresikan “like”?
Siapa tahu angkat tangan.
Students : Saya Miss! Saya Miss!
The writer : (the writer appointed one of student)
How do you express it?
Students : I love an apple!
b. Explaining the material

commit to user
15
In this part, the writer gave material that was still in touch with
the last material. The writer explained how to express like and
dislike in English speaking. The writer wrote some expressions
of like and dislike on the white board and the students try to
pronounce the expressions. The writer still guided them to
pronounce the expressions. She also gave the meaning of the
words in the material.
Ekspresi suka (like):
They, We, I, You + like, love …..
He, She, It, Father, Mother, name( Andi, Budi, Dian) +
likes, loves ….
Ekspresi tidak suka (dislike):
They, We, I, You + dislike, hate, do not like ….
He, She, It, Father, Mother, name( Andi, Budi, Dian) +
dislikes, hates, does not like ….
c. Joint construction text
In joint construction of text, the students work in small group.
The purpose was to make the students interact and share with
their friends. The writer asked the students to talk about the
foods that they like or dislike. The students wrote the foods,
and then they mentioned the foods in front of class with the
correct expressions.
d. Independent construction text

16
In this part, the student worked individually. The writer gave
some exercises to the students and guided them to do the
exercises. The writer did assessment here.
Select a suitable verb in every sentence!
1. Budi (like/likes) playing badminton
2. I (like/likes) meatball
3. She (love/loves) a cup of coffee
4. My mother (like/likes) a plate of spaghetti
5. They (love/loves) playing hide and seek
e. Closing
The writer gave homework to the students. In this part the
writer closed the class and said “Thanks for your attention and
see you” to the students. After that, one of the students led to
pray together.
C. The methods used to teach English Speaking to the first grade
students of SMP N 1 Masaran
1. Discussion (problem solving)
In this technique, the writer asked the students to have a group
consisting of four persons. The writer gave a topic about “food”.
She asked the students to discuss the food that they like or dislike.
The students had to speak in English when they discussed. After
that, the writer asked the students to practice their speaking skill in
front of the class.

17
2. Using Games
Game is an interesting thing to young learners. In this case, the
writer gave a sheet of paper that must be filled by the students.
There were many pictures of face in this paper. One of the students
asked her/his friend one by one with the same question. When
her/his friend answered “yes, I like it!”, the student drew a smile
face, but when her/his friend answered “no, I don’t like it!” the
student drew a sad face. In this case, the students would be easy to
memorize how to express something without getting bored. For
example:
Complete the following table by asking your friends, and
then write their name in the table. See example!
No Do you like…? .... …. …. ….
1 A plate of spaghetti
2 Fried rice Ο Ο Ο Ο
3 Some doughnuts Ο Ο Ο Ο
4 Pizza Ο Ο Ο Ο
5 Chocolate Ο Ο Ο Ο
6 Meatball soup Ο Ο Ο Ο

3. Using Song
In the last section, the writer gave a song to relax the students.
There were four groups in the class. The writer asked the students
to read the lyric of the song. Then, the writer asked group 1 to sing
the first line of the song. The writer asked group 2 to repeat the
lyric that was sung by group 2. It was done by group 3 and group
4. After that, the writer and the students sang together.
I like bananas, coconuts and grapes,
I like bananas, coconuts and grapes,
I like bananas, coconuts and grapes,
That's why they call me TARZAN OF THE APES!

CHAPTER IV
CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION
A. Conclusion
1. The activities of teaching English to the first grade students of Junior
High School at SMP N 1 Masaran
In teaching English, the writer manages class and makes a lesson plan.
The lesson plan consists of:
a. BKOF: The writer greets the students and introduces the material.
b. Explaining the material: The writer explains how to express some
expressions and guides the students to translate some vocabularies.
c. Joint construction text: The writer gives some exercises and the
students work in individually. She asked the students to select suitable
verb in a sentence.
d. Closing: The writer closes the class and gives homework to the
students.
2. The methods used to teach English Speaking to the first grade
students of SMP N 1 Masaran
The writer used some methods in teaching English speaking to young
learners. The purpose is to make the students (young learners) interested in
speaking English. The methods used to teach English speaking are:
perpustakaan.uns.ac.id digilib.uns.ac.id
commit to user
19
a. Discussion: The students discuss the foods with their friend by small
group. In this section the students are expected to practice good
English speaking and know many vocabularies about foods.
b. Using Games: the writer gives some facial image that have to draw by
the students to show the expressions of like and dislike.
c. Using song: The writer asked the students to sing “Tarzan of the apes”.
Young learners will be more enjoyable if they sing a song in the last
section. The song can make the students easy to memorize some
vocabularies.
B. Suggestion
1. English teacher in SMP N 1 Masaran
The English teacher has to motivate the students to study hard in speaking
English and give them opportunity to speak English more in class because
the students had limited chance to speak English at home.
2. SMP N 1 Masaran
SMP N 1 Masaran should provide more facilities to support English
teaching-learning such as pictures, cars, English speaking cassetes, etc to
make the students interested in English learning.
