Introduction to Plasma membrane All of you will make boundaries around your house. The main purpose of boundaries to protect your property from the intruders.

Is there any boundary inside our body?

If there what is it? How it protects?

The answer is yes!It is Plasma membrane. The Plasma membrane is a dynamic barrier which regulates the exchange of materials between the cell interior and its environment through a selective permeable membrane.

Curriculum ExpectationsB1.2 evaluate, on the basis of research, some advances in cellular biology and related technological applications (e.g., new treatments for cancer, HIV/AIDS, and hepatitis C; radio isotopic labeling to study the function of internal organs; fluorescence to study genetic material within cells; forensic biological techniques to aid in crime resolution

B2.2 plan and conduct an investigation to demonstrate the movement of substances across a membrane (e.g., the effects of salt water and distilled water on a potato)

B3.6 describe the structure of cell membranes according to the fluid mosaic model, and explain the dynamics of passive transport, facilitated diffusion, and the movement of large particles across the cell membrane by the processes of endocytosis and exocytosis

Fluid Mosaic Model:Teaching Approach

Fluid Mosaic Model Role play•To begin the activity 4 pairs of students with a band tide on their head stands facing each other with extended their both arms to each other (towards centre).•By leaving a small gap, another 4 pairs of students stand in a same manner. • The band tied on their head represents the polar head and the extended arm towards the centre represents the non-polar tails.•Now two students (assigned as integral protein) stand inside the gap facing each other without extending their arms. These students represent the integral protein (inserted protein) and the gap between them for the passage of molecules

Fluid Mosaic Model:Teaching Approach

Fluid Mosaic Model Role play: •Students who represent peripheral proteins stand outside back to back with students who represent the lipid bilayer. Peripheral protein students stand with different color flag, as they are surface markers to identify lipids and proteins•Now another set of students, who represents ions and molecules, can pass across through the channel until both side have equal number of students.(demonstrating passive transport and Dynamic equilibrium)•Another 3 students holding their hands together(represent ATP) to attach to a student who is represents the ion pump and they splits as 2+1 (2-ADP & 1 is P) which in turn help transport against concentration gradient(demonstrating active transport).

Inquiry based learningOsmosis and diffusion-Laboratory

•Students will have an opportunity to observe demonstrated lab on osmosis with sliced potatoes in water and salt water•Students will observe the changes of potatoes in salt water at different time interval •Students compare the potatoes in salt water and in normal water.•Student observes the Dye diffusion demo in hot and cold water•Teacher can ask question to assess their understanding.

Potential Student Difficulties

• Abstract concept of fluid mosaic model•Difference between osmosis and diffusion•Carrier protein and their functions may be abstract for students•Difference between primary and secondary active transport•Role of ATP in active transport•Differentiating between Exocytosis and Endocytosis and their roles

Solution to Student difficulties•Role-play will help to make the concept more clear•A demonstrated lab as well as virtual lab helps student to understand osmosis and diffusion in a better way•Carrier protein can compare with transit which helps in carrying materials•A video showing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGF6ry0SWPs Active Transport helps student to understand in a better way.•A T- chart or mnemonics will help to differentiate between exocytosis and endocytosis •Lessons will be modified for ELL •IEP students.

Safety Consideration• Precaution will be taken to avoid improper usage of internet as this class involves virtual labs.

•Lab safety measures will be intact concerned with demonstrated lab, especially handling with fragile apparatus

•Make sure classroom has enough place to do role-play and the place for role-play will be marked. •Proper instructions will be given to students prior to role-play

•Check and confirm all the safety measures and be prepared for any unexpected incidents.

Practical Applications• Students will have debate on Stem cell Technology •Presentation on advance in cell biology•Stem cells have found important roles in replacing tissues which are damaged as well as providing extra-cellular factors that can promote replacement of used items or materials.•Students will do presentation on advance in cell Biology ,especially in the field of medical science. Differentiated Assessment•The assessment would be mainly based on their debate on stem cell and presentation on advances in cell biology•A report on Ethics of Stem cell research(Logical)

•Debate on stem cell technology(Inter personal)

•An presentation on advances in cell biology(Audio visual)

•A poem about cell membrane(Linguistic)

•Role-play for fluid mosaic model(Kinesthetic)

•Students understanding on the concept would be evaluated on Unit test

•On presentation the new techniques and their scope in the field of medical science and industry will be assessed
