Answer:There’s no way to know?
ASME B16.20- Appendix B• Testing has shown that not all gaskets are able to
achieve the desired level of sealability• Several gasket variables impact gasket sealability• ASME PVP Paper was written about this topic
ASME B16.20- Appendix BWhen SW’s are removed, you can see where the RF flanges have rolled and left an imprint on the guide ring.
A groove was put in the centering ring to determine if SW’s are sealing on the windings or centering ring.

Many Refineries have a target gasket stress of 25,000 psi. Stresses above 40,000 psi are hard to achieve in common pipe flanges.

1) Methane Test at 20 Bar (290 psi)2) Use Volatile Organic Compound Analyzer (TVA1000) to detect
leakage3) Maximum Leakage is 10 PPM

Remember this number (12,500 psi) and note the number of SW stresses that are below the line!!
Many sizes and classes of gaskets built to the ASME crush requirement will fail to meet minimum gasket sealing stress values.
ASME B16.20 Summary• APPENDIX B was created to provide a minimum
sealing criteria for gasket manufactures to achieve.• US Government agencies are currently requiring
certified low-leakage packing technology (100 PPM maximum) in consent decrees and will likely do the same for gaskets
• ASME B16.20 is slowly evolving as the demands of the industry change
